In general, all governments aim to improve the lot of the people, but are also comprised by ambitious people who quite frequently use underhand means or wish to make personal gain. There's a natural dichotomy here, and in some ways I welcome this. After all, do you want an effective (but slimy and perhaps slightly crooked) person organising public services, or an ineffective (albeit brimming with enthusiasm and moral probity) amateur? I'd go with the scumbag, but within limits.
The Labour government are, to my mind, slightly better that the previous administration, but there's not a huge amount in it. I honestly believe that the Conversative party are morally corrupt, and it's always a surprise to meet a good one; I'd say the converse is true of the Labour party.
Where the Tories fell down was in not having a 'for' agenda; they were (and are) still very good at saying what they don't like, but there's precious little there in terms of what they do like. The Labour party came in saying that they would invest massively in education and the health service, and they have. The results are interesting; we've seen a hefty increase in longevity in the last five years (unfortunately this has also led to increased deficits for company persion schemes), and a huge increase in university attendance. This last one seems daft to me (why should 50% of the population go to university - not sure the supply:demand ratio for graduates:jobs has been properly thought through), but you can't deny that the places are there.
Sadly, they've also led us into an unwinnable war on the flimsiest of pretexts, which is a HUGE vote-loser. They're just lucky that the Tories are at least as disorganised as they've ever been, and thus have no realistic chance of a win for at least the next 5 years, or as long as it takes them to find a leader who appeals to the majority of the county and a set of policies which aren't centred on crime, immigration, and Europe.
PS Tel, you haven't forgotten our bet on the outcome, have you? Think I backed a winner on that one!

Now now pete. I honestly believe that labour will get in next time, however it's certainly not a 'fact', it's a strongly held OPINION (granted, one many would agree with). Besides anything can happen in the next 12 months that could change things. In any case, I bet you, and many others at the time, were shouting that there was no way that John Major would win the election back in the nineties but he did.
I take it you are putting £50k on the election at the bookies then? Sure fire way of making a few grand surely?

see post #699 (even Tony Blair has a better exit strategy than that!)
He then made a brief encore as the muslim fundementalist "Suhail" but was rumbled within seconds, choosing once again that discretion was the better part of valour and disappearing after a few days.
I suspect there probably have been more comebacks, but none worthy of proper attention

I don't know know what 'slats' are but I assume it hurts if someone kicks you there! Keep in mind that the turnout was a paltry 36% (source: bbc website), so probably only those who felt strongly actually bothered to vote. What the hell were the rest of the electorate doing that was so much more important . I don't have a vote in UK local elections, so you can't blame me!
Primary reasons : Bad headlines concerning immigration / criminality. Also proving themselves to be just as sleazy as the Tories who went before them.
Secondary reasons : Being arrogant and not listening to the electorate. But hey, they're politicians, so they always do what they think is best. This isn't always a bad thing, but at some point politicians need to pay heed to public sentiment and not only try to lead it. Keep in mind that if you asked the electorate if they wanted to any pay taxes, you'd probably get a resounding "no". So should politicians eliminate taxation because the electorate would want it?
Hope to have answered to your satisfaction.
