Make sure they have a syllabus, grading system (Method of assessment of skill not just to say...'I've got a Brown Belt!!!' To check progression). Also it is important that he does pad work and bag work (Punchbag that is)...no made stuff just so he can get a feel for hitting something solid. It will build his confidence but to get good will take regular attendance as often as possible (More than once a week) and plenty of practice at home...he should defintely not become a Bruce Lee in a few months. DO NOT TELL ANYONE IF WORDS GETS AROUND IT CAN MAKE MATTERS WORSE. Best to have it in his secret arsenal.
Long term it will bring him, confidence, discipline, fitness, strenght and ability to defend himself as long as he takes it seriously. You get out of it what you put in.
Hope that helps as well. Oh yes get a training partner if possible to practice moves etc. with out of class as well ideally.
