For the Empire State Building, it was zero.

Found this on a website...doesn't say exactly how many though.

During planning stages the construction death toll was estimated to be one worker per floor, or over 100 workers overall. However, only a handful of workers lost their lives during construction.

Here we go

How many people died while building the Empire State Building?
Though rumors of hundreds of people dying on the work site circulated during the time of its construction, official records state that only five workers were killed: one worker was struck by a truck; a second fell down an elevator shaft; a third was hit by a hoist; a fourth was in a blast area; and a fifth fell off a scaffold.
Doesn't say any of them were steel erectors though so you might be right...amazing that more weren't killed in accidents!!!

From here:

"The labourers (sky boys as they were called), walked up and down the structure as it was put together. Their job was to fix the separate sections together, often using large nuts and bolts. The work was dangerous although not one sky boy was killed during the construction."

For those interested - National Geographic Channel tonight Wednesday 27th at 9pm and repeated at midnight is showing "Frontlines of Construction"

Quote:"The daring thrill-seekers who thrive on the adrenaline rush of extreme heights. Tackling anything from skyscrapers to spires, these 'rope access technicians' can - and will - take on any challenge"

Maybe, just maybe, someone on the programme will use that elusive term and will finally put an end to my brain-teaser !

Agreed. I worked for a structural steel co in Thirsk a few years ago. The riggers were like monkeys, particularly one of them who would just shimmy up columns without a ladder. I used to have to look away sometimes as they walked across the narrowest of beams or purlins. Not a single accident whilst I worked there thank goodness.
