Stop generalising please. "All the Saxo?" I've got a Saxo, it's got a few mods, it's got a kit, it's lowered and running on 16's and I can't be tempted to race anyone. It'll beat some cars that it probably shouldn't or wouldn't be expected to, I know that. It'll get humiliated by others. I know which and I don't see why I should bother to prove it to some owner of a 20 grand car who thinks it's a big deal to waste a 5 grand, second-hand, shopping trolley.

I love this site, but some of the Subaru owners on here could be accused of the same snobberies and chavness they love throwing at the drivers of other marques.

mini cooper S's,
pah! massive massive let down in almost every department.
they are definately a girls car and little suburban wifey thinks she can stick to the same driving traits that her 3/5 series owning hubby has/uses.

1 good thing about minis, they are tempting the 4x4 school runners away (must be the new chic thing) and thats got to be good news, but a drivers car?
not the one I used!

Image is everything..... prejudice or what...
I bet people look at what you drive and make a judgement within half a second....
What the car does/ the driver is capable of,doesnt seem to have much to do with anything.

Wouldn`t mind a mini cooper S, as long as it was mint had the original 10" minilites. But undecided between the 1275 and the 1078 though. think the new one is pisch and just cashing in. How they can call a 1000kg + car a mini is beyond me. If you want a mini go buy an original and live with all the little quirks , it`s called character. There is nothing like turning a 1000cc mini from a humble 39 bhp town car into a 80 hp hot hatch slayer. And you think the new one will beat the old one through the twisties, No hope.

Actually I think that the BMW w@anker is a bit of a dying breed, a lot of them seem to have migrated to Audi, particularly the A4 Avants.

Have to admit, I did kind of like the Mini, but the moment the estate agents started using them Ijust started to hate them.

There's a fully tuned Cooper S near me somewhere - heard it a few times now and its an awesome beast.

Seems to have a racing gearbox in it or something, as he often struggles to get away initally, but then it flies, whistling and making all sorts of noise

Never driven one, so cant comment.

oh, and yes, to all Mini Cooper 'S' drivers

YOUR CAR IS NOT AS FAST OFF THE LIGHTS OR IN THE TWISTIES AS AN 'R' REG TURBO 2000.
LOL bit unfair 170hp vs 200+

Mine has been tuned well 210 - 220hp on a cold day once moving on the straights would **** on a uk Impreza which are slow as, I'm easily faster down the twisty stuff than in my TVR Cerbera and that had 150 hp more..... mine gets 97mph trap speed all day long at Santa Pod, loads of Impeza's were struggling to get 92mph trap speed.

It's like saying all Impreza owners are Chav council scum, there are bad drivers no matter what car they drive., get over it...

And you think the new one will beat the old one through the twisties, No hope.
LOL the old mini took an age to reach a ton, the proper mini as much as I like to drive it is pretty poor in every dynamnic department, rots like mad, built like a pile of poo, it didnt even sell in great numbers considering it was in production for 30 years. Why was that ? I used to borrow them from Rover overnight all the time and yes they are fun but that it.

I've got a Saxo VTS, am used to being sterotyped. It's good fun, is faster than a Cooper S and is more nimble, but the S is a better car, I get to drive them a lot, working for BMW. I've also got a 1979 1275GT, which is more fun than both of them.

Don't all get your knickers in a twist over comparing two totally different cars.

Oh, and angrybeats, you don't understand the driving thrills of driving a proper Mini. The ones you used to bring home from Rover were probably over wheeled Sportspack on silly 13s. Drive a proper Mini with an all singing 1380, which revs to 8k, on a set of 10" alloys and you'll be hooked.

Tried them and still prefered a 1.3 106 Rallye, me and my mate had a trackday mini stripped out etc etc and still nowhere near a much fun as a 106 Rallye which I suppose it similar to your Saxo...

According to EVO STD Slow Cooper S 0-100 in 19.9 secs and the VTS takes 22.6.. the 0-60 is probably faster in the VTS but its built pretty lightweight as is the 106Rallye...

Dont get me wrong I appreciate proper mini's for what they are but in terms of what I want out of a car they score very poorly...

If we all liked the same car it would be a crap world

I had a MY 04 WRX until a week ago and my wife has a MCS so I feel I can comment on this.

The WRX is quicker up to say 50 - 60 but this is mainly down to gearing and better traction, but once past this the MCS will start to haul it in ( if you dont believe me look at http://www.jsread.com/tvr/quartermile.htm )

Dry handling is pretty much on par but in the wet the WRX is obviously better.

While the WRX is a better all round car ( thats why she drives the MCS ) The MCS is faster even standard than most people give it credit for.

Also go and try Works Cooper S and be prepared for a shock.

I'll agree with that, I am talking standard WRX ( which as everyone knows is much slower than even a classic turbo )

Of course you didn't gatty, I believe you.

I own and drive a slightly modded Impreza My99.

I went out as a passenger in a friends new Cooper S. Quite frankly apart from a standing start, the Mini could easily match my car.

I went to Rockingham a few weeks back and was going to drive an M3 and a Cooper S. I had to drive the M3 first and thought it would mean the Mini was a bit of an anti-climax.

Rubbish!!! I preferred the Mini Cooper S! It felt just like driving my Impreza...

If anyone asked me which car to buy, unless they needed 4x4 occasionally I'd say save money buy the Mini!

Quote,

1) dizzy ignorant birds enganged in blinkered driving forgetting to indicate etc
2) young lads with trendy 'bed hair' styles razzing round thinking their oversized remake of a little classic is fast and cool. Shining their pi$$y little foglights at all and sundry, and comparing them to imprezas.

Spot on ! (apart from forgetting that they are usually Texting their m8's)

I am sure the car is lovely but there are too many about now, they suffer loads of reliability issues (engine failure !), have crap packaging and lets face it, they are pretty god damn ugly.

As for being a Chav car, not yet but when the middle classes tire of them and move on to the next big thing it will be the ultimate Ned mobile, not sue yet as the cheapest early Mini one is still 8 grand, dont know how that works, might as well spend another 3 grand and get a brand new one that hasnt got Garnier Fructis Ultra hold mouse stains on the headrests.

But a 172 Cup / 182 will pi$$ on a standard Cooper S, substantially cheaper as well. I work for an airline and the amount of camp crusaders who own New Minis is incredible !!!!!
