I dont think anybody should be allowed to drive big 4x4's (ie X5 merc ML etc)

you'll notice that the people who could be perceived as having a genuine need, they choose land rovers, and often 20 year old ones at that.

my nark is with the fact that some stupid tart with her latest toy who cant see whats going on and is oblivious to the fact that not seeing the full extent of your vehicle is an absolute fukcing disgrace that should be illegal.
think of how many times there have been incidents of 4x4's bumping other cars (well documented on here) because said stupid brainless bimbo cant see the front of the bonnet, or hasnt got the brains to realise when they are flat backed that the rear windscreen is the rear extent.
take into account that if they cant see the car they hit then they cant see if its a child or another car.

When I was bumped by a nudge-barred-up chav baby factory, I stopped her and asked what was the problem, she questioned whether I had the right to do so and when I asked her to pay for the damage she told me theyre hadnt been any.
"how could there, she didnt feel anything!" was her reply FFS.

they are a danger, pure and simple and the people who use them should be lined against a burberry clad wall and beaten.

savagely.

I dont get why you people think owning a 4x4 suddenly makes you a bad driver? I would of thought people who can't park them, do stupid 3 point turns etc etc would be exactly the same in a normal car. I take it has no one ever seen a none 4x4 parked badly, or doing a stupid manouver?
the ***** down my road is only a ***** when he's in hios pajero and freely admits that he doesnt have to care in a battered old '92 tank, when he's in his normal car (accord '99) he's actuaslly a nice enough guy who is courteous and the like.

far too much space on our crowded roads.
Just to chuck a quick spanner in the works, my Disco has the same wheel base (100") as a new Mini...ok, so I have the overhangs, but even with them they are the same length as a Ford Focus Estate...

...and that's without using the Defender 90's (90" with no overhangs) and the SWB vehicles (down to 88" with no overhangs) - just 'cos they look bigger doesn't mean they are...well, at least that's what my bloke tells me

Anyway, goin' home now - might try and hit some poor defenseless people in my large 4x4...actually, it's ok, 'cos I'm going down to the New Forest tonight, so I'll fit in nicely

"Give me one good justifiable reason to own a Mercedes ML or a bmw X5"

Because people want to own them. Why shouldn't they be allowed to? They make just as much sense as the need for an Sti (unless you intend to track them, and then there are much better cars for that too).

Mr aguement isn't that they are the most sensible car to have in the world, but if people want them, they should be allowed to have them. If people can't drive, then they shouldn't be given a license in the first place. It's a bit like saying no-one is allowed a Subaru becasue some people have been caught speeding in them, therefore everyone must speed and drive dangerously.

Subarus must be about as much use in London as a 4x4 (seen as London seems to be everyone's favourite example of where not to have one).

PS they look about as cool as a fat balding bloke wearing designer togs and an expensive watch.

as opposed to a scoob being driven by some saddo who lives with his folks becuase he spends his money on a pillar gauges, gets his exercise from his weekly wax n shine session and spends more time on the net than he does in conversation with another human.....that in no way detracts from the other!

I'll refrain from comment on that one for fear of offending anyone who fits the mould as we are on scoobynet. What has that got to do with drivers of oversize SUV's looking uncool as it gets?

From a motorcyclists point of view, it often feels as if 80% of 4 wheeled vehicle users could do with learning how to control their vehicles. Learning how to use mirrors, indicators or even just looking outy of those glass things called windows would be nice too.....

A lot of the MIWLF's who drive these things seem to like to show them off. Usually between two revolting, heaving, white buttocks.

Think we will have to start 4*4ial.

This has been done to death in the past. I have one, I've had a scoob so not overly biased either way. You could argue in towns both an Impreza and a 4*4 are equally pointless. I can't wait to see how the government try to ban them from towns, will it be wheelbase, fuel consumption, 4 wheel drive, height etc etc etc. If they go on the obvious fuel consiumption / green army element think the scoob will be kicked from town too.

Before my first scoob i had an ex-Army Land Rover 110 diesel hardtop. It easily had to be the most useful vehicle i've ever owned.

I used to go to the rally in it as it was nearly impossible to get stuck in, and sleeps 2 adults + their kit comfortably. It was ideal for going fishing and shooting in, could take 10 people to the pub at lunchtime (i don't drink), good fun going off-roading, good for moving big furniture, could take loads of diving kit to the coast etc etc.

Then again, i don't live in the middle of a city, and i don't think a chavette essex mom would be seen dead in it (or be able to steer it!).

Oddly enough, i found it really easy to park in tight spaces. It was square and there are no awkward/weird overhangs.

Wink Toyota Rav4

Hi all

I am a unmarried women with no children and I drive a Rav4 1 year old this Sept, Desel 3 door black tinted side and back windows the better one with out the plastic bumpers.

I love my car and yes she looks cool but I wanted one because of the safety of it and the high up viewing.

I see over cars so making it better to see whats happening in front and I love getting up into the car rather then down in to one.

The best and fairest way to "ban" them is simple. You use the same logic that prevents me from driving a 7.5 tonner even though those of you who passed your test a few years earliern have this right.

Create a new class of vehicle defined as something like, over 1.5 metres tall and with more than 3 seats (so that we dont lump Transits in the same category) then make new drivers have to pass their test in one.

It's not an immediate solution but it will weed them out over time, and those who do want one will have to learn to handle it properly, which will make them harder to obtain and thus more of a status symbol.

As for the usefulness of an Impreza in London, someone I know recently managed to warp a set of Sierra Cosworth discs (on a non-Cosworth Sierra) in stop/start central london, so I imagine the Impreza brakes would be useful plus the improved handling is great for avoiding the nutters who step / drive in front of you.

safety of it
I see over cars so making it better

pmsl...

where did the RAV4 come in the safety ratings?
you need to see over the cars? if you use correct road positioning, rather than being 6' away from the bumper in front you can see up, down and around the cars in front.
both arguements are complete tosh!
(and standard issue responses from 4*4 owners in the city)

I would just like to thank the w@nker Shogun driver who crashed into the back of my dads Legacy on Tuesday night, forcing him off the road and crashing passenger side on into a lamp post. Wrote the car off and had to have the roof cut off to get him out
Luckily only a few bumps and bruises but still in hospital for observation.

Just to add the Shogun driver has failed the intial breath test but I've heard nothing back about the second.

lol...whats it like to be so mad all the time.......we have a rav4 owner who is happy with her car and likes the improved visability...and you dont like because....because why? its no good in a crash? maybe she wasnt planning on crashing? maybe she simply doesnt give a ****.....bottom line is she can have one, will always be able to have one and theres nothing you can do!

if only they made than Ford 150 pickup in right hand drive! now that would be cool!

Tiggs,
pmsl at pic
re: RAV4 woman.

the problem is that the standard responses as to why do you drive a 4*4 are the exact same ones quoted above.
they are piffle.
I am trying to perform a public service by pointing out to Chel the stupidity of her vehicle choice and at the same time highlight to her the unpopularity of her choice with (almost) everyone else.

there are many on here who have done the same thing for me with my choice of car (scooby)

but her choice is perfect...she likes her car and she feels safe in it. on the basis that you have no idea how she drives you cant comment on her skill....you can comment on how safe that car is in a crash but why dont you trawl the members gallery which is full of old dogs that ppl have bought in some attempt to relive their youth when 205's, etc where all the rage.....go tell them their cars arent safe....or the motorbike forum.....or the westfiled owners...etc, etc

Have been watching this thread for some time with amusement.

Chealsea Bun Is your RAV4 actually 4WD or did you go for the hairdresser special 2WD, in any event what is the point. 4WD is really only useful off road or for traction on performance vehicles.

The problem these days are that people see 4x4 as trendy and get on the "it's higher up with better safety" bullsh*t as an excuse. Anyway a majority of these people have gone from karting there kids to scholl in a Fiesta/Smallish car to something the size of an aircraft carrier that handles like a truck. No skill just the determination to get the kids out of the car and to look as cool as possible for the headmaster.

I used to pass a school daily on my way to work and the congestion caused by these things was inexcuseable (that said even the little cars caused problems) especially the way in which they were parked.

Keep it real if ya need the space get a people carrier (for those with 3+ kids) or and estate. 4x4 belong off road or being driven to somewhere that is off road.

Rant over

Rup

this thread is a joke right peanuts ??

i'm not a fan of 4x4's but isn't it a case of 'whatever floats your boat' ??

from my experience there is some truth in the parking/physical perception thing but there are probably as many scoob or other performance car owners that are completely unable to control the sheer amount of horses on tap. given that anyone could go out and buy an fq330 then i'd say that this was as dangerous/ludicrous as someone buying a 4x4. in that case then surely both classes of driver should prove themselves capable of controlling their vehicles properly.

seems to me the only people on the road with any reasonable form of qualification are bikers due to the amount of training they need to do to prove themselves.

Agreed all drivers should have to prove themselves, often and in their own vehicles.
The biker idea: it's a nice one but the sheer number of fat old born again biker types who smear themselves over the landscape on a depressingly regular basis disprove this theory.
