What do you need for to go shooting?

Well in my opinion theres no skill in taking somethings life, I am country born and bred and in the un-fortunate times I have come across pheasant shoots the birds do not stand a hope in hell. If you want to shoot for your dinner go out there and find it in the woods. Don't try and justify shoots by saying that the birds get eaten or its a skillful sport.

Dunk is quite right in questioning whether I'll hit anything at all .......

Fair point - will have to check it out.

Well that will make it all right then won't it , you might not hit anything at all? Well perhaps thats about as stupid as the pro-hunting people going out on hunts and saying they might not catch and kill a fox, amazing and ignorant

The pheasants have got it easy, well thats what the battery farmed chickens think of the sport. They'd give their right wing to be given the chance to avoid being shot. I think The Moose would prefer that too, I doubt he'd have his attire dilema if he was to attend a chicken shoot.

catwoman,
It is clear you don't know as much about this subject as you should before launching such an overt attack upon lawful shooters.
The birds are fed, watered, given as much space as they want and protected from predators for most of the year, then they get killed and eaten, just like cows, chickens etc.
You have a problem with the fact that people take pleasure in pitting their wits against their meal rather than donning your rose tinted spectacles and pretending their food comes from a "meat tree" in wobbly cuddly land where animals don't die to become human food!
Its humane, its legal and its fun, and the fact that you personally don't agree with it is no justification from preventing people from pursuing their sport.
So there!

No I don't live in cuckoo land, I live in the country. I have a pheasant gamekeeper opposite where I keep my horse so I know how it works. No I don't hunt before you ask and I don't eat meat

I could, by all rights, launch into a tirade about my opinions on the nutritional inefficieny of not eating meat, but I won't because I respect your decision not to eat meat. All I ask in return is for you to respect shooters right to participate in legal, sporting shoots!

Catwoman,
Get a life. Each to there own and I would have honestly thought that if you were from the real countryside then you would understand the necessity of hunting.
I do however agree to you a little bit. The big shoots where 500+ bags are seen are a bit OTT but even on these shoots most of the shot birds are eaten usually in local restaraunts.
Kev
P.S. What a waste of post number 400!! Live and let live
P.P.S. This Saturday I will be out and about Winchester in one hand and Labrador by my side hunting for my dinner

Did I miss something ? I'm sure The Moose asked where he could go in the Hemel Hempstead area to be outfitted for a game shoot.
I don't remember him asking for opinions on whether game shooting was morally correct or not.
Mind you, we could ask how someone who says they don't eat meat can justify keeping a horse confined in a paddock/field and who probably treats the animal as a beast of burden ?

I'm with AJM. If reincarnation is true I'd sooner come back as a pheasant where my short but well looked after life would be far more pleasant than a battery hen being force-fed growth hormones without ever seeing daylight to develop into an anaemic piece of meat for some meat processing plant.
Moose, I hope you have a good day and enjoy it. Just remember to keep the gun "broken" when not on the stand and never address a low flying "rogue" bird. You should be respected for gun etiquette rather than your plus fours!

Personally I think keeping horses is cruel but we won't go there...

Moose,
Seeing as you are a fellow Scoobynetter and potential future converted shooter, I'll sort you out at trade prices!
Get a quote of what you want from your local supplier, then visit our website, and call my mobile for a chat:

...and you can look VERY smart for under £150 brand new, despite the bullsh1t you will hear!

Presumably the shoot includes an evening meal afterwards - if so you'll also need something suitable to wear.
The choice of clothing will, to some extent, depend on the formality/location of the shoot. As a general rule farm shoots tend to be be slight more informal than Estate shoots. Your host(s) should be able to give you guidance on dress code, but expect collar and tie and, generally speaking, a tweed sports jacket rather than a suit.
HTH
NB - You'll also need earplugs or ear defenders for the shoot.

I take it then you are a vegetarian if not then I would put up with the thread and the fact that people shoot for sport. You are equally as responsible for the suffering of a chicken if you buy it from a supermarket (unless it's free range)
Troll, troll, troll, troll, troll, troll, troll, troll, troll it's back to work I go......and back to the subject in hand...........
Be posh opt for a golf buggy, travel the fields in style.
