Avalyn: I forwarded the MY05 picture here, dam sure it’s the same old 4 pot calliper, just painted properly.

Will post my pictures of the rusting callipers at the weekend to compare

jasonius: well done for bringing this up, like to see your pictures for comparison.

So are the MY05 callipers the same as the old ones, just painted properly?

Ajax

the red painted callipers I have seen on the MY05 WRX's at Stan Palmers have no raised "subaru" lettering like ours. The lettering is flat as you run your fingers over them.

It must have looked a bit strange to the sales staff as all I did was walk in....... poke my fingers around the front wheel of the MY05 WRX in the showroom....and walk out again. I guess they must think I am some -care in the community- front calliper stroking nutter

Maybe there are two types of MY05 calliper ??

Default Any old iron

Pictures as promised,
Front Callipers, Look like Scrap iron on and 18 month old car

Rear Calipers, these look OK

No idea why they have deteriorated so much at the front and not at the rear, is it just coincidence that the MY05 ones are now red?????

Ajax, your front cals in much worse state than my 99UK. Cals are the same. I'm not sure what the finish is, I don't think it's actually paint. It looks to me as if it could be blackadising which is ,I think, a form of sheradising. It ain't a very good treatment for exposure to the elements, not in my experience.

Default Shame on them!

s70rjw: Yes I can see your point about then doing more work, in the wet you can see the water steam off the fronts, when you have been on a run.

The rears callipers were always better in finish, perhaps the finish on the front has to be like this because of the extreme heat that’s generated.

Vegescoob: Yes I don’t even think the fronts were coated in the first place, just made of a cast material of some sort.

Lets the car down, and it does not help it’s a part that bears the manufactures name in large painted lettering.

Perhaps they are trying to aspire to branding rusting tat. Shame on them!

Thanks for your replys

Finally got pics of 05 calipers!

Sorry for the delay, the cars needed cleaning badly and with the weather being a bit 'tom tit' didn't wash it till today!

However I'm unable to post them!

Anyone help out?

Purely in the interests of science these are my fronts at one year & one month old.

And these are my fronts after one year & one month & one & a half hours labour.

I did use Wonder Wheels on the OE calipers but never left it on any longer than I had too & always rinsed well. The finish was fading & the metal was starting to oxidize but then any unprotected metal will do that.

I think the problem you have is, that in the eyes of most car manufacturers the brakes are purely a functional part. Not cosmetic. They are just another oily rusty dirty lump that hides under the car enduring the harshest of environments & conditions.

Provided the working surfaces (internals) are not rusted so that the seals leak the manufacturer is going to say "Well they may not look pretty but they work to the required standard".

You could get them hard anodized (ordinary is not tough enough),spray baked like they do motor bike cylinder barrels or painted with a specialist caliper paint.

Or get some nice red Brembos.

The front calipers always loose their colour once they've had wheel cleaner or the likes put on them, easiest solution is to paint them yoursleves.

Thanks Paul,

Whats the best resolution to post them? Their currently 1800x1200 (~600kb), a bit to big I think! I'm on broad band so it' not a problem for me, just others viewing on dial-up!

I've also got a few of the new centre consol (with my new ally gear ****) if you'd like to see them?

Cheers,
Jason

Cool

Jasonius: Posted as requested, I like those nice new red callipers, looks like they are different altogether than the MY03 set up.

I quite like the front consol, typical Honda/Toyota styling, pleased to say it does not look cheap and tacky.

The front calipers are steel, the rears are alumnium (just in case anyone didn't already know).
