I don't believe it's a legal requirement although a huge percentage of horses, especially those which go out on the road will have some insurance, both 3rd party and in terms of vet's bills etc. Kinda fully comp I guess

I get pissed off with cyclists getting to their destination while I'm sat in traffic

So much so that I turn the car around, go back home and get on my cycle

Cyclists I don't have a problem with, mainly as, from time to time, I am one.

Do agree with Redkop about the not looking bit though. I'm very aware of cars around me, or possibly appearing out of nowhere, so before pulling out I have a good look around. It seems i'm the only one over here who does this. Maybe they've developed some telepathic system here between cyclists and car drivers? lol

Fog lights, pah, don't really bother me, if the world was just, the fools would be getting pulled over and nicked for it, but alas, they won't.

People on mobiles, ok, give ya that one. I've had a fair few 'words' with dozy cannucks and yanks who are on the phone and just pull right across in front of you, or are wandering all over the place. As far as I'm aware it's not currently illegal to be on the phone in a car over here, pity really, they drive badly enough without being on a damn mobile.

Turning corners at 10kph! WTF? Maybe this happened in the UK (I'll find out soon enough) but I don't recall people slowing right down, I mean to walking speed, to turn a corner. What the **** is that all about? You're waiting to turn left, and some bugger is turning right, but doing it at a bloody snails pace.
This is NOT in a raging downpour with poor visibility, nor is it in snow, it's in good light and warm, dry conditions. grrrrrrrrrrr.

Driving in rain. I know we all slow down a bit when it's raining, but acting like your joey deacon in a car because of a little shower is overkill. Canadians just don't seem to be able to deal with driving at a decent speed in the rain. There are massive tailbacks as people crawl along.

Not understanding *my* "accent". Now, I don't think I'm that difficult to understand, anyone who has met me knows my "accent" is either slightly plummy (yeah right!) or more usually leaning towards maidstone. I speak correctly, using americanized words (trash instead of rubbish, tomayto instead of toomato, and other such like things) they just don't get it. grrrrrrrr.

Old people driving who clearly are incapable of. Doing 30mph on a national speed limit road....stopping ON roundabouts....not aware of anything around them.

People who do not overtake the 'old people'. Overtaking is fine, so long as its done safely.

People who think you're wrong for overtaking.....it was quite reasonable when many years ago one car was faster than another and it would overtake. It wasn't a problem then and isn't a problem now.

LED washer jets! Why?

Drivers using motorway lanes incorrectly and still not understanding when you undertake them to make a point.

Incorrectly spaced numberplates.

Fog lights

People who just go on and on and on

When its not pi55ing down with rain in this country I like to get out and about on my bicycle. Overall I find motorists to be very considerate and careful around me.

I return this consideration and respect by refusing to ride 2 abreast as this is unnecessary, selfish and extremely inconsiderate. I find those that do ride around like this tend to be almost 'militant' in their use of bikes and do so in order to purposefully pi55 people off. They tend to have the sort of self-righteous attitude already mentioned on this thread that they are in some way 'taking back' the public roads and defending their god given right to take up as much of the queen's highway as they possibly can.

IMO this is what 'bull' bars were designed for and should be used accordingly with complete impunity.

Talking

White vans staying in overtaking lanes. Feckin nightmare coz you can't see past them. In heavy traffic I usually keep an eye on the brakes lights at least 4-5 cars away. F@nnies in vans pull out and then just stay there.

Get's right on my nipple-ends that one.

Oh, and don't get me started on that Imlach ..... feckin Cyclists

Mmm...let's consider the above.....

....in conjunction with this....

Hmm....do you see the irony in the above? Self-righteous and "taking back" things.....just exactly what you are prescribing in the opposite direction

Sorry, do I need to put in a to specifically highlight irony/'tongue in cheek' for you or do you think that I'm may be typing this from my prison cell pending manslaughter and murder charges for mowing down cyclists.

When I'm driving in traffic and see someone trying to pull out on to my road I generally flash my light to signal them to pull out and I slow down, pisses me of when they don't even see me so I usually end up having to stop as I have slowed down so much

Well I can't stand Girl Cyclists with fat *****.

Apart from that I'm pretty easy going - Possible exception being people in "Performance" cars not using them "properly" .

Agree with all of the above, lost count of the number of times I've been flashed at by the car I've just overtaken. Irrespective of the fact that they're pottering along at 35 in a NSL.

What about folk who stop at a roundabout, even when it's COMPLETELY clear for miles around. They'll sit there and wait till another vehicle comes along, then pull out just in front of it

I meant a REALLY old guy who didnt stop at the junction of the roundabout but actually on the roundabout when a car from the right had to beep him. He was so shocked he stayed stationary at the RB for a while Followed him home (his driving was v v hazardous) and notified the local plods

But I'm with you on what you say about junctions also.

Cycle paths in most parts are few and far between some are so short its not even worth getting on them.

I think the government should look at places like Cambridge which has excellent facilities for cyclists.

If you cycled on them, you might find out why.
Normally a lot of reasons, although there's seems to be a hardcore of folk who don't use them for no reason!

o cyclepath too short to be of any use
o cyclepath too full of pedestrians/other obstructions which makes it slower
o cyclepath full of broken glass etc

However, most cyclists seem to use them if they are decent cyclepaths. Short 100m stretches of path are useless (as seen in some parts of Edinburgh!).

Also, do you mean the pink cycle lanes that are ON the road, or completely separate paths? If the former, it is wise NOT to use them if the road is full of parked cars as you would end up weaving in & out which is actually more dangerous than keeping a straight line OUT of the cycle-lane.

Yep, give them a break - mostly they'll be on the road because the cycle lane is a) ridiculous or b) in such a bad state it's impossible to cycle on.

* people who dont re-rack their weights in public gyms
* people who smoke in public
* people who complain about the prices of stuff (if you dont like the price, dont frickin buy it)
* people who take credit for other people's work
* people who write pet hates lists on internet forums (oh wait...)

Mooseracer and Imlach, the cycle paths where I live are long, empty, in better condition than the roads, and there are loads of them...otherwise I'd agree with you.
And Im not talking about cycle lanes, Im talking paths designed specifically for cyclists.

Oh Milo, curse these potent alcoholic beverages I have been consuming all evening
I do mean purpose built tarmac'd paths designed for cyclists that run around my whole town, that even have white painted pictures of people riding bikes on for the really stupid. They run parallel to the roads which is why I cant understand why anyone prefers to "dice with death" on the roads instead...

Oh and the town is Abingdon if anyone can back me up on this one

If you know continental Europe well, you'll be aware of just how much more prolific bicycles are than in the majority of British cities. In London especially, cycling is perceived as some sort of adrenalin rush rather than a serious transport alternative....

As I said, there are a hardcore that seem to prefer the road EVEN if there is a PERFECT cycle path available. If anyone knows Edinburgh, the A90 running between Barnton and the Forth Bridge is a case in point. This is a 70mph dual carriageway, with a COMPLETELY separate tarmac cycle path at the side. Yet still some cyclists (usually hard core roadies!) prefer the dual carriageway.

The only reason I can think of is that the cyclepath was not tarmaced until 2-3 years ago, and perhaps they haven't been aware it is tarmac now (you can't see it from the road).

Nuts. Fair enough on a slower road, but a 70mph road is a bit mad....

I'll generally overtake cyclists on the other side of the white lines if it is possible to do so. I like to consider that should a cyclist fall over, it will not be me that runs over their head. If overtaking at high speed, there is also the issue of wind sweep which took me off my bike as a kid.

I hate when cyclists undertake at traffic lights when there is no cycle lane allowing them to do this. If that lane is not there you wait in traffic like everyone else (this comes from my dad hitting one of these idiots as they sat to the left of his van, rear wheel level with his bumper, the van was signalling left.

I think cyclists should be made to display numberplates so that you can identify them after they put a big scratch down your left hand side and take legal action. I dont think they should pay road tax.

I dont mind people sitting in lanes 2 or 3 so long as they move over when another vehicle is approaching. hopping between lanes 1 and 2 constantly is annoying, so sit in 2 but get the hell out of everyone else's way if they are going faster.

Best way to deal with someone who is hogging lane 2 is not to undertake them, but to time your undertake so that you remain level with the person overtaking them in lane 3 and pop out of the person's blind spot at exactly the same time! this normally wakes them up. (there is case law to prove that undertaking a middle lane hog where it is safe to do so is legal according to one nearly-retired traffic police officer that I spoke to)

Fog lights are useless in the fog unless it is really thick, and are even worse out of the fog and just prove that the driver is really thick. Unless they switch them off when there's an oncoming car. I dont care what you do if it doesn't harm anyone else.

I actually find holding the mobile to your ear safer than using my hands free, this is probably because most hands free kits are crap and you end up leaning forwards towards the speaker and still struggling to make out what the other person is saying. But then I drive an auto and my mobile calls are usually shorter than a good nose picking session :P I used to use the earpiece thingie which gives the best of both, but I beleive that's illegal under the hands free law, so now struggle along with the hands free kit.
