I think as standard the MI lump was 150BHP as found in the 405 MI16.

Figures are kinda difficult to tell as its not a production car but i would imagine high 6's or early 7's for 0-60 and 15 second 1/4's.

The early Mi lump was 160bhp, but usually makes 168bhp std in a 205. The later iron block Mi was 150bhp and 25kg heavier.

Adding tb's/ecu to that will take it to 190bhp (thats what i'm doing at the moment).

As for figures, they average 0-60 in 6.3s, average quarter as std is 14.4. I did a 15.4 in mine last year, but that was with dodgy induction, hot and a knackered engine, not to mention my first go and I was crap.

Parts for the Mi are no problems, the block is the same as the 1.9, only the head/pistons are different - hardest bit is finding good Mi engines as everyone keeps buying them up

Worst thing is rebuild costs - the liners have gone on mine, and to replace pistons/liners from Pug is 895 + vat, if they even have them in stock.

GTi-6 engine is very similar though.

is it just as easy to fit a GTI-6 engine as a Mi16??

do you reckon a garage charge me the same price to fit either or is there alot more work involved fitting a gti 6 eingine?

Same amount of work to fit either engine, they were based around the same block and engine mounts.

Easy enough to do it yourself though. You just need a modified inlet and exhaust manifold - £100 and £350 respectively and a Grp B lower engine mount - £50.

To be fair if your thinking about buying a 205 then buying a gti6 / Mi engine and having it fitted by a garage then your talking big bucks. The engine and ancillaries is gonna cost you at least £500 to buy. Budget another couple of grand for a rebuild (unless your sure of the engine before you put it in) then the guy putting it in is gonna want another grand ontop to fit it. Add that little lot up and its not cheap.
Your better off finding a friendly enthusiast who has done the conversion before and making it a weekend hobby.

Im sure the like of DW can put you right on costs etc but dont expect to get a 170 odd BHP 205 without spending a good few quid. Of course you may be lucky and buy a good Mi'd car for cheap but they are getting very rare now. People tend to bump prices up for good ones.

All i'm really botherd about is having a reliable 205 with no rust or crash damage, to use for the 10 mile commute to work.
Engine mods would come later.
But for £1500 i doubt i will find one like this.

For £1,000 you can get a good reliable 1.9 or 1.6.

If money is tight or you dont wanna go mad then I really would recommend a standard 8valve car. As to its reliability your either lucky or your not. Mine has been great for the last 16 months, baring a new radiator.

1.5k would get you a very nice one.

GTi-6 engine is heavier an less reliable than an MI-16 so I'd stick with the latter.

Mint 205's ....hmmmmmmmmmm bear in mind your talking about a french car which is 15 years old. Its gonna be tricky. If your looking for an untouched one elderly lady owner garaged from new car your better off trying to find the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. There are plenty of good cars about but mint im not so sure.

Theres an old lady near me that has a concourse condition white 1.9. Its a 92 model I think, and only done something like 50k miles - she's had it from new.

Re costs, they do get expensive, but it depends how you view it. I want to keep mine forever now, so I treat it as a classic project type car - only used at weekends etc.

So far its cost me £3500 and its not even running yet - need to spend another £1k on it for new engine etc. So in the end it will cost £4500 not including insurance, fuel etc - but some people I know lose that amount in 1 years depreciation so it doesnt bother me. Its my main car really (wife has a Focus for shopping etc), whereas folk like Gary have a Subaru to run as well, so I dont mind splashing the cash on it.

Just bought 2 bucket seats for it as well

Good, ish. 1.4, 90-100bhp depending on model.

They use twin choke carbs to get the power so they are good fun. Usually same engine as the XS depending on year. As quick to 60 as a 1.6 GTi, bit gutless after 60mph though - 90mph max.

Martin - does the SD cage bang your right knee at all when driving? I want a SD cage, but being 6ft and 17st I worry about my knee hitting the upright.

DW - 6ft also, slightly lighter - dont notice the cage at all when driving...except the door bars when getting in, but even they're not too bad.

Just nipped out to the garage with a tape measure

Right hand side 'down' bar is 45mm from door card when door shut, is 40mm (approx) dia. and is a 'touching fit' to the dashboard by the air vent (phase 1 dash)

My knee is 135 mm from the down bar as 'the crow flies' at all throttle positions - so nowhere near it at all
