I'm not arguing either way regarding the environmental impact of a scoob, I thought you were talking about the technical legalities of insuring one.

Ok, I've been a little unclear. If someone replaces their decat centre section with their oem one to pass the emissions test, then they are uninsured. Insurance requires a valid MOT certificate, and if the vehicle is knowingly not complying with the conditions of the test then it is uninsured.

And when that person is involved in an accident resulting in someone's death.....

Completely fair point. It would be interesting to know what would happen in the case where an insurance company insures a decatted vehicle, subject to MOT, and an MOT is obtained. How would they prove that a mangled motors decatted system would not have passed an emissions test? Furthermore what about cars less than 3 years old which do not require an MOT and an insurance company agrees to insure them? Just playing the devil's advocate here, you understand! It would be interesting to know if there were any test cases. I have a legal PPP, by the way!

I would imagine that the insurers are more concerned about the brakes and tyres and structural integrity when they require an MOT as they dont want to insure a car with no brakes.
I would also imagine that they would use the de-cat thing to wriggle out of paying if they could, but it wouldn't be the most likely thing they would think of.
What RPM do they do the emissions test at anyway?

regardless of young people and scoobs, any uninsured drivers,is costing honest hardworking, legal paying drivers, money in premiums and a nightmare if someone uninsured has an accident with you,it will get to the stage when when we shall all say **** it,and not bother renewing.

Fully insured on a UK 03 STi all mods declared, Back Box, Springs.

Anybody who isnt insured should be banned for 5 yrs min and have their car repossed, same for road tax " shopped somebody for that a few years ago "

I make it that 12% of Jap imports are currently without insurance, based on these stats. In contrast, only 3% of UK models are uninsured. It seems that my gut feeling was correct.

Can anyone offer an explanation as to why? is it easy to obtain and drive away an import vehicle without providing details of your insurance? it's a very foggy area to me.

Taken from this website:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/Topics/Moto...6&chk=tkjX%2Bp

"Exhaust emissions - vehicle meets the requirement for exhaust emission. These vary on the age and fuel type of the vehicle....Exhaust system - complete, secure, without serious leaks and silences effectively"

Quite interesting. I couldn't find anything more specific on this government website. Maybe some of you are involved in MOT testing and have a more detailed reference. Be interested to hear.

There are ALOT of scoobs, and cheaper Import scoobs in particular, for sale in the local rag, and autotrader..... Private Sellers probably wont check insurance details as most will be after the money for their car.

After all, if they are away to drive a Scoob un-insured, they are probably currently driving around un-insured. So if someone pulls up to your house in "their" car then being the unsuspecting person I am, I would blindly assume that everything was present and correct (MOT/Tax & Ins.)

Grant

I bet a few out there who have dark front window tints don't know there NOT insured... I Had a go at a muppet in a Landy Disco with dark tints in the Shell stn the other day, as he pulled in and neraly hit a pushbike... He had know idea that if he'd have pulled out into a car he wouldn't have been insured at all...
I.e possible finacial ruin.

muppet...

In all honesty though Dazza... Maybe the guy never knew his tints were illegal, my mum had the same problem recently when she was up north.

She specified medium window tints all round on her new A4 which the dealer happily carried out without any mention of them being illegal...

Looks great, however, she was given a severe "telling off" by traffic cops when she was stopped. I know its your job, and I understand why you have to let people know that their tinted windows are illegal, but why oh why do some Traffic Cops have to be such ar$eholes about it.

My mum genuinely didnt know anything was wrong, had been travelling at 65-70mph on the dual carraigeway and was taking her 90yr old mother up north for a long weekend, its not like she was some spotty chav & his mates in a beaten up Nova that had been driving like an idiot.

I question your methods, not your motives...

Cheers,
Grant

i got 5 years no claims with 3 points on my licence for a TS10 (jumping a red light) i did a quote on the Tesco website and over the phone (i am already with tesco on my old car) and got given pretty much the same price bar a few quid and the discount you get for buying the insurance on the website... dunno how it's so cheap compared to everybody else but my insurance has never been that high on any of my cars.... Maybe the area i live in makes a difference? The only other thing that was required was that i install a Cat1 alarm, immobilser and a tracker

just a quick one, having no mot DOES NOT invalidate your insurance!

no mot just earns you a fine and if there are any defects you end up with a rectifier unless the motors an absolute shed!!!
i had a head on collision a couple of years ago (some bloke driving wrond way down the road!?!?!?!?!) ended up hitting a parked car, didnt realise my mot had run out 10 days beforehand but it was all sorted no problem, £30 fine for no mot that was all
no tax invalidates insurance not mot so emissions doesnt effect insurance!

I may be wrong but i dont think no tax would invalidate your insurance either

you dont need tax or an mot to get insurance

you need tax and mot to park or drive a car on the road though

iirc you are correct! I believe having no MOT is NOT and endorsable offence also it is not required for insurance.

you are also correct! Having no tax is nothing to do with police whatsoever, therefor that is a non endorsable offence, the owner of the vehicle is responsible for this. usually a fine is submitted. also not required for insurance.

It is however a bit weird i think that you need a MOT and INSURANCE to TAX a car though!

just my 2p's worth,
nick
