If both lanes are being used in a zip fashion then that is fine to travel up to the cones and is definately the best method. IF however there is a big queue in the left lane and you people take it upon yourselves to drive right to the end before merging when it is clear the 'zip' method is not in force then you are being ignorant arseholes.

Better education is needed here and a concise rule in the highway code, along with signs e.t.c. Ultimately the big G is to blame for this, herds of people are too stupid to work this out themselves.

If anyone has been to Germany you'll see that everyone uses the zip method and it works very well. To them it is the normal thing to do, why it isn't made normal here I don't know.

Excellent work RJMS. Have you sent her a link to Scoobynet - she could learn a lot Seriously though I'll certainly be sending a very short mail in support of applying an universal policy of zip merging.

Excuse me, but I still fail to see how zip-merging or whatever you (b/|stards ) want to call it, can aid traffic congestion (the only way to do this is to add throughput, right?) if there's a *queue* past e.g. a roadworks?

How does zip-merging aid the congestion at a point that is past the merging point (as the roadworks in the example above)?

Henrik - it avoids conflict and the confusing and different individual approaches to the issue (see this thread ) Some people even get violent if they think someone is stuffing through - not good...

i can see the point when the traffic is still moving, but if it's stopped (or moving very slowly indeed), surely it's 'unfair' to the other drivers behind? (Assuming half of the drivers don't use the outer lane - in which case I agree, it will be as fast as having one single queue).

'Unfair' above with the same meaning as outlined in my first post

A road planner once said "if I wanted you to get out of the outside lane at the 800yd sign, I'd start the cones 800 yds earlier"

Another thing for everyone to consider - 1 lane of queuing cars can quite often mean that the queue extends back past a junction and hence delays people who have no wish to go through wherever the road is actually restricted.

Obviously the same could happen with two lanes but it would be less likely. So by forming one queue we are actually delaying people who really don't need to be in the queue at all (and would doubtless not be "let in" to get off at their junction because then they'd be queue-jumpers). Just a thought

lol....800 yards???

why?

i drive until my lane is closed then indicate and wait to be let in. even if it takes 4/5 cars before im let in its still better than pulling in 800 yards back!

if you were supposed to do what you say then the sign wouldnt say 800 yards....it would say pull over!

T

ps- do you park 800 yards from your car park space as well????

There are road works where i live just now and the two lane road goes round a roundabout everyone sits in the left lane i go in right lane and the car next to me ALWAYS tries to stop me getting in

BUT as has been said with a scoob you can get in lots of gaps before they realise you are even there!!

THERE ARE 4 BIG SIGNS SAYING USE BOTH LANES

On the outskirts of Aberdeen at the moment, there's some roadworks on the busy dual carriageway which has caused long tailbacks for the past few weeks - mostly in the one lane with an empty lane on the outside.

The police have been appealling to drivers via the local radio station to use both lanes, right up to the point of merging, as it makes the overall traffic flow faster and smoother.

LOL, no mate, but I would be happy to CONSIDER it if it appears more courteous, and avoids winding fellow motorists up - unlike you
