I was under the impression he was taking the **** out of people who are actually like that ... a bit like the film 'Bill and Ted'.
So was the writer of Alf Garnett, supposedly, but it worked the other way.

If you read my original post, you will see I was talking about "proven" as a past participle. It is true of course that it is an accepted adjective. There is a significant difference. I probably should have mentioned that.

You can call me picky of course, but I just don't like seeing the English language ruined and diluted by the use of incorrect words and phrases or americanisms.

Damn! Guilty as charged your honour. Not for being Brendan's son, which I am not (he'll be happy to know) however I use this phrase. I shall now endeavour to avoid doing so in future.

I was watching the South Bank show on the Darkness and the use of so (as others have pointed out) was really starting to grate. The first person who uses that on me today is so going to get a slap

What about the people who finish even the most bland sentence by raising their voice slightly so that it sounds like there should be a question mark at the end of it....as in "I went down to London today?" AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH

Cool

But English is one of the great mongrel languages of the world. It's not like French or German or Chinese or Greek etc. It's a terrible mix and constantly changes. English has been spoken on these shores for a thousand years or more, but you wouldn't be able to understand someone if you went back a thousand years, and someone a thousand years from now certainly wouldn't understand you.

The meanings and pronunciations of words evolve over time,so although we may not like certain things, it is inevitable and nothing new, like.

Why a thousand years? I frequently don't understand my son.

And I am quite sure he doesn't understand me, but perhaps that's not just language...

I think there are lots of bright young chaps who spend their lives trying to think up more clever expressions to impress their bosses or whatever. Business speak is the most irritating of the lot.

I don't take much notice of poems Jason, they always seem to go a bit peculiar with words.

I recently swapped desks with our facilities manager who is, amongst other things, responsible for the office cleaning contractors. It seems the cleaners haven't realised this yet and keep leaving the comments book on my desk.

Having just had a read through it I cannot believe the level of illiteracy that is still present in some people, and these are relatively young people!

Here are a few extracts with all the spelling mistakes preserved (also imagine them written in the handwriting of an 8 year old with lots of scribbled out bits ):

where do you keep your papper hand-twoles p.s. do you know where they key is for the toilets rolls holdder has we cant put any toilets rolls in the toilets at the moment
can you please make sure that Any Glass that gets smash please could you wrap it in newspapper, has my worker who work's with me cut her leg on it
I doNe vacuming and toilets, Other cleaner xxxx was ment to be coming down to do bins and Washing up. As i can see she Never, Really Sorry
I am tempted to get my red pen out!

Thumbs down

I was in a restaurant the other day and got subjected to a group of yanks next to me going, "and I was like", "and the guy was like", "and I'm like...etc.etc". I agree. Most irritating, and that load of **** "Friends" is largely responsible.

2 more things to add to my list of things to ban.
