Actually my parents' house has a 3 phase supply but unfortunatly for Tony it's outside Labour's jurisdiction! Not that we would stop DIY'ing even if it were not!

Even so. If you're dealing with an existing 3-phase install, it would make sense to continue using the existing colour scheme given the conflict over the blue wire because it's an easy ****-up to make, but you can't any more as you can't buy the wire.

(not a qualified electrician, but knows one, and used to work for a company that deals in these things)

Oooh look at you! Well I've seen envy take all sorts of forms tiggers, but I have never seen anyone get an inferiority complex because their electricity supply is only a weedy single phase.

Yeah, being serious I'm in complete agreement with you. I have a very good friend who's an electrical contractor specialising in industrial work. He told me about this quite some time ago and it does seem completely stupid. He is quite worried that someone will get hurt.

Originally the proposal was that if any mods are carried out to an existing three phase supply then all the cables had to be changed for the new colour scheme. This has now been scrapped I believe as it would have made the cost of work prohibitive, but now instead there is all sorts of labelling, sheathing etc. required which will still make the job longer and turn the whole thing into a dog's dinner.

And you still haven't as I don't. Nah, you're right - I want one too

Seriously though there are not many domestic dwellings that have a three phase supply so with your love of hunting I was guessing at the landed gentry thing. Actually are you therefore Scoobynet's resident toff?

OK then maybe you're not a toff - you're just an average joe with a love of hunting and whose parents have a weird electricity supply - how's that?

When you've quite finished trying to pigeon-hole me I suggest you put the embarrassment of your lower class electricity supply behind you and start concentrating on getting the thread back on track, as per your prescribed duties!

Good point!

ajm, In posts 74 and 78 you repeatedly try and take this thread off topic despite my attempts to keep it on topic (see posts 75 and 77). Any more and your posts will simply be deleted.

Will that do you?

Now being serious for a minute - how come your parenst house does have three phase - it's a bit OTT for a domestic dwelling isn't it?

Regards,

tiggers.

Thumbs down Oh dear ...

A few points:

Note its not incompetent homeowners, or homeowners doing substandard DIY electrical work, but just "homeowners doing DIY electrical work".

So Charlie will be made redundant unless she takes a degree in electrical installations.

Problem as I see it is that a garden designer won't want to become qualified in electrics/plumbing and so will have to hire these parties in to install a water feature. This will up the cost and time taken to undertake tasks traditionally carried out by a single supplier. Kitchen tilers won't be able to move sockets etc. etc.

Better go and change those brake pads now while you still can.

Can’t agree more, there has been a write fuss kicked up where I work about this. There really could be potential for people being seriously hurt or killed, as we work live and parallel new systems up with existing ones (e.g. six live ends). The idea to use black as a phase was truly ridiculous, it’s only a mater of time before someone gets killed mark my words.

Just a question ref change of colours. Where did this originate? Is it (shhhhh whisper) EC inspired in the interest of harmonisation?

Got it in one. Obviously some idiot sitting in an office somewhere in Brussels made an "informed" two second decision to inflict this stupid idea on our country and our great government caved instantly.
