WYIOC - Pre & Post Meeting Comments/Musings
#421
cheers Al,
Its just getting embarrasing when I get called up and didnt even know the magazine had my number, and then getting asked where do I go to subscribe, offer discounts etc, felt very amateurish.
The WYIOC free servers have now decided to introduce a popup I see, which is very annoying, but I'll leave the site online until/when a decision is reached.
As befroe, I dont mind doing a site in my own free time, as long as we know where its going.
The site I have at the moment is html/MYSQL and I can configure it just about anyway needed, but unless it'll be used then I dont see the point.
I know I said "Al I think this is your area mate" , but in all fairness its down to everyone of us to input into this, wether positive or negative, but as always , I see the viewing count of these threads/ideas going up quite quickly, but the post count dosnt..
Have Your Say.................
As before, I'll activate the WYIOC areas on my site, but input is needed before things grind to a halt
cheers
Phil

Al/Phil. As a generally silent lingerer! I am probably guilty of not contributing much but, here's my 2p:
There are quite a few 'issues' at the mo, the name one being frequently tussled with but unresolved. As an Impreza owner I obviously would like a club dedicated to the marque but understand that this appears to limit the turnout, although at present the ex owners & friends of friends who have all sorts of cars seem to be positively encouraged, which is great & word of mouth would seem to be the best way of avoiding the thing turning into a cruise!
If, for example the wyioc moniker becomes defunkt & then someone unrelated decided "There isn't a West Yorks Impreza Owners Club - I'm going to start one" then it would be an oddity.
Regarding a web site, I post on here, a saxo forum (pah, rinse mouth with soap) & now briskoda, purely because of ownership. Blinkered maybe but I can't be arsed with the plethora of other multi-marque sites. If there have been 2 WYIOC sites & no one used them then is one needed at all?
Scoobymag landed on my doorstep last week & I did notice the WYIOC bit on the club section. On here & in there are 2 great free ways of promoting it but as you (phil) say there's no point fielding calls if you don't know what to say to folk.
Lastly (phew), as a NON paid up WYIOC member (I'm not really sure why I haven't paid my subscription!?!), it just suits me to have the non formal arrangement as now. Having ditched my position as a School governor due to the time constraints involved with my young(ish) business & young(ish) family I am at the mo unsure about committing to anything tbh but I would & probably will have a better involvement in the future all being well as it's unfair that a few shoulder all the responsibility.

Guys - my views are principally as per Al's post. There are three fundamental areas that we need to address on Thursday, namely:-
1. The club name. There are pros and cons on both sides, although I think that Steve has a valid point, in that a multi-marque club would have a limited appeal for what is still predominantly an Impreza-oriented club and membership. Opening up the club to other manufacturers might be democratic, but we run the risk of diluting its original and principal purpose. In addition, where do we draw the line in terms of acceptable members/marques? Do we allow XR3s, Novas, and the like? Nope - well how do we filter them out?
2. The subs are safe and ready to be repaid as appropriate. There seems to be limited advantage or reason to have a cost associated with membership, other than to a) maintain some form of membership 'exclusivity' or filtration, and b) to plough back funds into the club in terms of ongoing web hosting costs.
Of course, there is a counter argument to say that, by paying a membership fee, we become entitled to discounts from third party suppliers and track days. However, in order to maintain this rule effectively, it needs to be properly policed. So, if this policy is to be maintained, technically we should charge non-subscribers an additional fee for the forthcoming trackday.... Mmm, how popular will that be?
3. The WYIOC (as it's still called) website. I think that the relative lack of success of the previous site(s) indicates that there is little established need for a members' forum other than ScoobyNet. After all, this is still where we all congregate, and it's still the principal place from which WYIOC recruitment occurs.
My view, in broad agreement with Al, is that the WYIOC site should explain who we are, what we do, and where we meet. Within those basic headings, we can include discounts, trackdays, nominated personnel and so on. I don't think we need anything more complex or feature-rich.
Finally, I think that this is better discussed on Thursday within our core membership as, with the best will in the world, the full monthly WYIOC meetings tend to distract us all from 'housekeeping' and committee matters.
Of course, I am open to persuasion on the above items, subject to well-reasoned argument and input...

Great points all round... Therefore Thursday will include the name change game again.. as well as other tightening up matters for the club..
I'll pre-book The Cabin again and bring some paper to make a note or two....

Just a couple to add in... (flames time?)
Feel free to (constructively) re-word these bits - I know what I'm getting at but it might not be the best way of putting it...
a) could you make the ownership open to impreza owners and "selected other marques," the nature of whom can be decided by the club. This may be rally type, 200+ bhp type etc without directly naming car models. It may give you a vague way of excluding the "undesirables" but there's always a chance that somebody of that persuasion could turn up in a scoob
b) could the name be something like the car mags do - "Car incorporating Performance Car" so we could have "WYIOC incorporating... (Evo / Sticky's mob, RUFfians etc)" and it would keep WYIOC at the topp of the letterhead but would allow "outsiders" in?
c) I guess we don't want to get into too much red tape but if you had an AGM, you could only allow scoob owners a vote or one between five for the rest...
Only another 2p... Nomex at the ready but it's a tight squeeze

HB, what time you coming round this way and does Ermintrude (moo) know where I am? (If I'm still allowed a lift?)
PS did you pick up my missing flap on the night as I've had a wander round the area since and can't see it?

Not sure if Sticky still wants a lift - will check.
Soz, but I've not seen your flaps mate.... Question is - who will deliberately misinterpret that comment, as it's addressed to you.....??
I've still got some other components that may be of interest....

Gary.. anyone? Anyone know of a Lime Green Gallardo in Dewesbury?
Nearly choked on me Humbug as it glided past in the opposite direction outside the Rams ground... Posted a 'Was it you' in case the person concerned fancies joining the club to add to the performance iron & make Ian feel a little more at home..
Maybe even get them to join us at Rallydirve for a lap or two?
Maybe I've rumbled Chris? Apple's new ride? Ian test driving a new addition? Sticky moving to the Lime Green side when his licence returns?.. Mmmm.. to many questions, not enough answers..

Of it's the one I'm thinking about, it lives on the estate opposite me - along with a 360 open top, Bentley Arnage Turbo, Range Rover Vogue, X5 at al - need I go on?
Not posting location just in case...
AFAIK all the same family or branches thereof - remind me about them Thursday...
Apple
PS HB - that time should be fine - you can bring the stuff across and dump it in the garage if you like?
Could be a stellavision night for once (if the pockets go deep enough )

Hiya guys, just reading through the thread
Going back to club business, reading through people's pros and cons, I can see that changing the name is a contentious issue. I however, should I ever get a free Thursday would not be put off coming, even though I dont have a scoob anymore, although the thought of getting another is very tempting!!! I did like the suggestion of the WYIOC incorporating whatever like remark, I would just make that really small on the letterhead
Going back to the meets themselves, Even though I am slightly younger than most of the core members I was always made to feel extremely welcome and thouroughly looked forward to meeting up with everyone and chatting, not just about the cars but just in general.
Even if people whom may be deemed undesireable did turn up, how many meets do you think they would last if when they tried any of their shenanigans (soory bout spelling!!) they got no or very negative response? My guess would be one? or even about 5 mins after their work!!
Finally, I think that since the group was formed, It has gone from strength to strength and should pretty much continue in the same vein. I think that £10 per year is no big deal but should not be deemed compulsary but more of a donation. Then if people want to give a bit more, or dont want to give then fair enough. I think however that you would find that the majority would contribute.
Anyways, sorry for rambling on - just thought i would offer my opinions!!!
Now back to the madness!!!! :
Cheers

Martyn - thanks for highlighting some very relevant points there mate.
I think the practicalities of 'unwelcome chavs' not lasting too long cannot be overstated too much, and maybe some of us (me included) have lost sight of this form of 'natural discouragement'....
In fact, that observation alone almost redeems you for implying that me and Al are old gits....
