That's not necessarily love. There are other reasons to be scared of losing someone than just love. Many people stay in unsatisfying relationships just because that's what they are used to. It's comfortable and safe, and when faced with losing it, they're scared of the unknown, and of being alone.

there is an interesting dynamic bewteen being a martyr, stayng in an "unsatisfying" relationship, and on the other hand chasing after some kind of rainbow that in reality doesn't actually exist. IMO relationships are a compromise bewteen two people's expectations. some compromises are better than others but I don't believe that people should be too hasty to chuck away something that works just because they've had an idea about something that might work better.

I already have. In one instance I was with a lass whom I loved so dearly that it took me a full 2 years to properly get over the relationship and even at that part of me died when we split. The problem is I can't remember back all those years to where the crossing point between really caring for her and being in love with her came. That said I can't imagine you go to bed one day really caring for her and wake up the next day in love. It must be more gradual

Yes, there is a difference between loving and being in love with someone. For years after I split with the above referred ex I loved her but I was no longer in love with her. I possibly even still love her now!

I think love is a combination of many of the things above. You have to be willing to sacrifice some things for the person you love, and when the person you love leaves, you feel a big hole has been left behind.

There is deffo a problem with searching for the end of the rainbow - my girlfriend and I split up two years ago and we have both been with other people but I still feel a hole that she left. We see each other quite frequently and she has failed to find the same spark, but maintains the search; yet we both admit to still being in love. :-/ Head screw.
