Guess you don't see the sun up there that much.
Never, not once, nought, and we don't have electricity or television yet and haggis run around in the fields and we all wear kilts all the time

Hope you got my point about voting for another party due to one small bit of their manifesto being a bit wayward (or crap)

Andy, back in July I became one of the Hardened criminals who sped. I lost my licence for 6 months (long story involving 3 points coming off my licence on at midnight of the day I tripped a GATSO in a 30mph zone travelling at 34, a court case, humiliation, huge fine and my best funeral suit). As for your question about how to stop people who have been banned continuing to drive............dunno mate, but i have not and with 27 days of my ban left will not....the thought of prison or extending my ban terrifies me.

Hope you don't want to have my legs broken, or my car crushed, just spend 000's on it whilst it's been off the road

Small part maybe, but significance wise quite a large part in some peoples voting habits.

Trust me I'm not judging people for speeding, as I'm sure we've all read about the injustices in the courtroom!! It's not as if I have never gone over the speed, or will never go over the speed limit again!!

All I'm saying is there are some people who have picked up bans, by point accumilation, speeding or drinking, but yet there are no measures to ensure they don't drive during the ban. Just pointing out the issue of uninsured drivers (rather than coming up with a solution for them!!), but I'm sure that some of these people still drive throughout their ban, or in some cases, continue to drink and drive despite the ban.

I'm sure prision is enough to stop most people, but realistically you'd probably only get an extended ban.

As for crushing your car or breaking your legs... hmmm

Cameras are simply not cricket, an affront to the British sense of fair play. Simply a disingenuous tax collecting device hidden by the fig leaf of safety and law enforcement.

I fully condone those that set them on fire.

Sarcasm aside, there really does need to be a review of speed limits, and it needs to be done by combining the 80th percentile figures with an assement of the road quality in general, not based on anomolous crash statistics or how easily a camera can be hidden.

You can't just get rid of that much revenue without some kind of come back
Perhaps they won't ban smoking either so they continue to make the revenue from that. Don't forget, proportionally nowadays the government makes very little from speed cameras, the majority are yellow/orange and therefore police subsidising.

About the only bit of the present campaign the government got right was brainwashing people with the "speed kills" message.

This morning on breakfast TV there was an item about a hit and run driver with no insurance. Her father wanted a concerted campaign against insurance dodgers. I agree.

Unfortunately some t*sser from Belfast texted them to say thet uninsured drivers, untaxed drivers, even drunken drivers were not the probelm, the problem was that speed kills.

And they read it out on air and didn't take the p*ss

Whenever a subject like this comes along, the pious "speeding is a crime, just don't drive fast and you'll be OK, so you have nothing to complain about" brigade arrives in force.

If all 30 limits were justified and clearly signed, I would be all for this. However, many 30 limits (Farnborough, Hants is a good example) are totally inappropriate and poorly signed. Some are not in built up areas and don't even have pavements. Because of this, I think this new proposal is nothing more than a cynical attempt to extract even more cash from the already beleaguered motorist. Therefore, I find myself strongly against this proposal. Maybe the afforementioned brigade would think differently if they were on the receiving end of this new clampdown?

NSl on a dual carriageway, these were 70mph roads beforehand!!!

Not sure about the increase in points for a higher speed, but then again you should not be doing 40 to 45mph in a 30. Perhaps much larger fine? £2,000?

Very last sentence on the BBC url:
"In 2003, 3,508 people were killed and 33,707 seriously injured on Britain's roads."

So, the goverment want to reduce this. What about the 30,000 deaths PA for cancer related illness? Goverment method of reducing this, raise the price of ciggs.

The Conservatives have pledged to review all speed limits, assess the effectiveness of all speed cameras and make speed limit signs much clearer.

They have also promised to concentrate on criminals in cars rather than on cameras and to clamp down on uninsured drivers and anti-social behaviour
What does that actually mean? If they're really going to do something can't they give more details about what exact changes they are going to make or how they're going to achieve this?

I don't see anything wrong with the government's proposed measures providing the current speed limits are also reviewed.

Ah a classic posted earlier about how worrying where speed cameras were would affect the driver who drives according to his perception of the road and conditions - what a completely ludicrous thing to say!! OMFG what kind of idiot are you? Should we have a speed limit that fluctuates depending on the size of the drivers ego? Keep within the speed limits and you will never have to worry about the gatso round the corner!! jeeeez!

As for oceans comments - clearly backwards or trolling to the max - they get burned they get fixed they get burned they get fixed all costing more money from the camera budget - how do they get more revenue to supplement inbred vandalism - more of 'em..D'oh!

I hate labour - a country managed by a bunch of shop stewards that the working class can assosciate with and warm to regardless of policy - but a sliding scale to punish speeders - pure genius... But hold on dont we have something similar now? If I do 39 in a 30 I'll only get 3 points and £60, but catch me doing 60 in a 30 and Im off to see me magistrate chums and get many points and one meeeelion pund fines. So a documented scale is just capturing on paper what essentially already exists and rightly so to

My tory party (god bless em and no Im not MH) will use any old reteric to reel a few more dissillusioned blairites... Wait till a pre election manifesto before you make up your mind and only half believe that!!

Amen

Question Here's something for people to tear apart

How about ......
Abolish car tax and put extra charge on petrol, that way every one who buys petrol also buys road tax
Some sort of method whereby when you take out or renew insurance on your vehicle you get given a set of registration plates that are 'tied' to your policy.

Just some thoughts

Red face

So?

Let me get this straight ..... what some people are saying here is, 'because a duly passed law is inconvenient for them, the government of the day is cr4p'?????

If the law says that 30mph is the LIMIT (note the word LIMIT, it is NEVER referred to as a TARGET!) then, if you get done for 31mph its not fair and you will go to sleep blubbing into your pillow??

GROW UP!!

Instead of buying an overpriced detector, try this (and its FREE) - do 25mph in a 30 ..... do 35mph in a 40 and do 65mph on the Motorway

One side effect of NEVER getting a speeding ticket is that you are calmer, less stressed, you start to love the government and - most importantly -

a child lives to see Xmas!!

You speeders who whinge and moan and whine and blubber are an absolute disgrace - you are a bunch of spoilt babies and should be caned!

The good ol' fashioned "one-speed" driver who is just as dangerous as the "fastard" who drives at 30mph+ over the limit

These are the dangerous ones who kill people, not the good drivers who occasionally go a few mph over the limit

Find it quite difficult to read anything that's as much a crock of ****e on here recently, pslewis included

Everybody drives according to their perception on the road and conditions and their ability. Speed limits are not the be all and end all causes of accidents. Let me think now, holier than tho poster, have you ever gone even 1 mph over the speed limit? Find it strange that so many people seem to be popping up that tell others to stick to the limits, yet I'll wager there has been at least one time in their sad existance they have gone over it, unwitting or not.

The only idiots around here sonny are you and the rest of the sandal brigade.

Please explain why the driver you describe is dangerous if, as you should, you also travel at 25-30mph in a 30 LIMIT?

A child hit at 25mph lives to see what Santa has left - a child hit by a thick, selfish, moron at 45mph will never see Santa ....... period

SLOW DOWN!! Its NOT clever, its NOT cool, its NOT smart and its NOT sexy!!

Speeding is for children on their Playstations, leave the fantasy world behind when you get behind the wheel!
