I once joined a queue of traffic on the A14 caused by one lorry overtaking another, westbound just before the St Ives turnoff. They still hadn't finished playing when the road went up to three lanes at Bar Hill and the overtaker finally gave up. For those who don't know the road, that's about 12 miles with the two of them side-by-side.

Perhaps I was a little unfair about you missing History lessons as it's clear from your lack of maturity that you're still at school and therefore couldn't have completed the syllabus. Meet up for a fight? Grow up and stop your hypocritical rants as everything you've accused me of, you're guilty of yourself but it's unlikely you'll be able to see that.

This forum is about debate and just because you get pulled up for making sweeping statements with no facts to support them, doesn't mean that it has to descend to playground level unless you're already there.

You demanded constructive ideas from other posters, which I've contributed and you've failed to respond to other than to get on your high horse and accuse me of insulting you by lumping you in with other muppets on this forum who insist on pinning the country's woes on their most disliked politician.

If you look at your own posts objectively, you'd admit that you're you have double standards at the very least but I doubt you're big enough to admit it given the fact that you're quick to throw insults around without subtantiating any of your comments about the rail network.

But are they? Developing a water taxi network has been mooted for many years but never really taken off and although Red Ken is behind it, I've yet to see much progress.

Maybe incentives for car sharing wopuld wase the prblem a little. Take a look around you in the rush hours. Most cars have just the driver in them.

Look, this is a forum where people air their views whether rightly or wrongly, that doesn't mean because you disagree with them you lower yourself to insulting people and indeed still are doing.

You are obviously new to bbs boards otherwise you may think twice about what sort of comments you are posting, little tip, dont be personal.

You are just another example of an **** poster on here who is the usual holier than thou keyboard ninja

Tell me, would you have made those comments to someones face, no i think not because you are the type of person who is 7ft tall and built like a boxer when you are behind a computer. You make me laugh

Did i say i wanted a fight............... So now you profess to know my political stances read my mind and know all about my school life, c'mon you're really Derek Acorah aren't you.

Your an **** posting keyboard ninja pr1ck............... there you go i've now dropped to your level. Thats sorted loads out hasn't it.

I started off a post, tongue in cheek and through one comment you decide to insult me, end of.

You dont know me unless you are a medium, i've been posting here for years people know me and i know them. I suggest you get to know the posters styles of writing and their personas before you go feet first with the holier than thou attitude.

I've drawn my conclusions about you, you do the same and we'll keep them to ourselves eh.

Good call chip

I think a lot of it should start in large civil servant buildings and large complexes. Sadly we can't do that here as cars are needed throughout the day and home times are "varied" to say the least.

However i do see a few call centre car parks near where i work and these are overflowing with cars on the kerbs etc, surely, as you say incentives could be offered to counter act the problems

I use the motorways a lot and do see a lot of problems caused by lorries overtaking - causes huge hold ups, sudden braking etc. They tend to pull-out in front of rapidly approaching cars.

But put lorries in one lane only and you will get some probs unless the is a minium speed for them - just image the truck tail backs if some huge load lorry doing 35-40mph is on the motorway!

Point taken SB

It was just that it was motoring related and i spose the majority of users on here came to this site as they had a performance car thus potentially anything relating to motoring would be sided toward the car user but then it descended into a new user lambasting someone over a political comment

Why? They're just as slow as the coaches. Or is there a pattern to this:

1) You drive trucks, so trucks must be allowed to slow everyone else up (see previous posts)
2) You tow with your car, so towing cars must be allowed to slow everyone else up (see above)
3) You don't tow a caravan, so it's OK to restrict their lanes (see above)

Hmmm, a bit of self-interest creeping in there, I think, Olly!

Red face

I think we should just build lots and lots of nice big new roads across the countryside to help accomodate the increasing volume of traffic and keep my job safe (none of this silly train and boat stuff )

Another clearly ill conceived idea thought up by people that don't understand the practicalities. There are far more cars on the road than lorries. Next time you are on a motorway, three lane, have a look at how much traffic is in lane three and look at who is actually causing the hold ups in lane two. Fixed penalties for those who do not move out of lane three because they think they are travelling at 70 or those who habitually run in lane two when there is nothing for a couple of hundred yards in lane one are the main culprits. The speed limit for lorries on the motorway is 60 mph but all UK lorries are limited to 56 mph. So 60 mph is only achieved down hill. ( unless it's an Irish wagon. They are a law unto themselves.) Coaches are limited to 70 mph. Now if lorries are restricted to lane one their speed will be that of the slowest vehicle in lane one so if some OAP wants to drive from London to Newcastle at 40 mph the whole transport system is screwed. Get the picture ?
Now with all wagons restricted to lane one, as already pointed out, how will other motorists gain access at slip roads ? Journeys that can be done legally in a day or a night now will take two shifts so distribution costs will escalate and there will probably be an increase in the number of wagons on the road. There is already a dire shortage of experienced HGV drivers and the job is becoming less and less acceptable. With increased nights out and the problems of rostering to end up back at home base at the end of the week, I guess a lot more people would leave the industry which will only assist the further decline of UK Limited to a third rate nation. There is a lot more I could say but none of it is rocket science.
Something else to consider. The speed limit for all HGVs on single carriage way roads is 40 mph. Now if all the wagon drivers in the country were to drive at 40 mph, other than motor ways and stick to lane one it would not take long to paralyse the country.
Fuel duty and VED is higher in the UK than any other European country but only a small fraction of the taxes raised are spent on transportation, road, rail or whatever. An enlightened government would be taking a 20 year view to create a slick logistics environment rather than shackling it as happens at present.

Rip up the majority of rail tracks. Only keep rail for travel/commute within 20 miles radius of London.
Convert all other rail tracks to roads for trucks/coaches only.
Cheaper and more efficient in long run.

It's been said before, if we drove more like the french on our motorways, it would be loads better. Uphill sections have a crawler lane for trucks and they're not allowed to overtake on the steeper bits and most people have good lane discipline rather than being lazy and sticking to the overtaking lane even though they know they'll be pulling out again in a minute plus no bugger tries to deliberatly box you in.

I'll second that. It's all too easy for people to critisize when theyve never even sat in a truck let alone driven one.

It sounds to me like a knee jerk idea to court popularity now that I think about it and I dont think it will work very well.
