Lost In Translation - wonderful film - full of atmosphere if you allow yourself into it - recommended to watch.

About Schmidt - junk - nice idea but literally nothing happened

I think in order to get a clear idea of whose views/ tastes are most similar to our own and therefore whose opinions we should take notice of - we should adopt the Amazon type idea:

"I hated Lost in Translation - Films I've also hated inclide: "

OK, films I've also hated:

Hanging Up - nearly walked out, just depressing drivel.

Some 80's film that takes place in one night where this guy just wanders round and meets a load of weirdos, can't remember it's name, but it's ****e.

Great film.

Many will hate it though.

If you have seen and didn't like any of the following, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Oh Brother Where art Thou or Welcome to Colinwood then don't bother.

LIT was OK, some nice bits but a bit of a Hollywood ending. I've never seen Brief Encounter, hence me asking. Loved About Schmidt.

I know I'm in the Scoobynet minority as one of the films I would happily have walked out of was Vanilla Sky - utter, utter, utter dross - which many on here seem to like. Ronin was also - well, actually I can't remember anything that happened in Ronin except Sean Bean proposing a crossfire that shot each other.

OTOH another film I would have walked out of was Moulin Rouge, and I think there's agreement there, so perhaps I'm not TOO weird...

The Road to Wellville.

So utterly crap, I'm losing the will to live just thinking about it.

I liked Vanilla Sky...except the ending was just a cop out. There we all were waiting for a clever ending and all you get is the cinematic equivalent of

Here's one to AVOID AT ALL COSTS - don't even be tempted:-

'Gerry'

Two mates get lost in the desert ... the entire film simply shows them wandering about from place to place ... and not saying much.

Other than the absolutely STUNNING views - desert in the morning/ sunset etc - the camerawork was ****E - there were occasions as 'we' followed them through brush and gorse, the screen centreing on one of them speaking and the focus was off! Not just once, but several times - and not for arty-farty effect either.

It was a bit like 'Walkabout' but without any sense of direction (haha no pun intended) either in the plot itself or the bloke shouting orders from behind the cameras. No trepidation, no sense of involvement, no tension - nothing!

Literally like :- scene1 - two blokes walking up the side of a hill ... scene2 ... two blokes walking down the other side of the hill.

Don't get me wrong, there's been some wonderful films out there that basically consist of nothing more than a single set and two characters; Robinson Crusoe on Mars - cheesy 60's title, but an IMMENSELY stunning and gripping film. Not like 'Gerry'.

Don't do it. Crap. ****. Boring. No story. No direction. No redeeming features. Badly shot. Amatuerish. Bleeeuurrgh ...
