Chris seems to have had a similar experience to me.

We just have to deal with the fact that some people are mindless idiots.

Here's a good one.....

Sunday PM on the Shoreham to Henfield road (Sussex) northbound by the disused works of some sort.

BMW 325i in front of me suddenly breaks with nothing in front of him. I'm thinking WTF are you doing... is there something in the road?... have you got a problem with the car?

I break and slowly come up to the 325i's bumper. We're now doing about 5-10mph with a line of traffic behind me slowly grinding to a halt.

I then noticed the driver and the passenger are looking across to their right at the disused works. I really don't know what their looking at so I flash the guy and make a gesture of 'what you doing?' with my hands.

The 325i drivers then flips me the finger, gives me a w**kers sign and then puts his foot down

Nothing against BMW drivers (I love the new M3's) but did I do something wrong? or did he recognise the headlights of an Impreza?

J.

Guy comes up stupidy fast behind me, flashes me to move over. That would have been ok except for the bl*&dy 5 HGC's right next to me in the middle lane which I was over-taking. I had two choices: 1)I could back off, forcing the guy behind to slow down (which from my rear view mirror, didnt look likely) whilst I attempted to slip in behind the lorry, or 2) speed up to quickly get out of the tw£ts way. I do not take kindly to this sort of stupidity.
People like that are the reason why we all pay over the odds for insurance.
My point only applies if you are impeding the flow of traffic; if you are overtaking with a view to moving back safely to the left hand lane(s), then it is obviously the other driver who is at fault...however if you are sitting in the over-taking lane (not the ‘right-hand lane’ there is no such thing), at whatever speed and you ARE able to move over safely the courteous action would be to move over and let the faster traffic proceed regardless of their speed or what they are driving.

Unless you are a police officer it is NOT your place to enforce speed limits.

Squadron leader,

LOL He rightly repremanded you for having the impudence to question his driving. He is a BMW driver and -as such- owns the road and is beyond reproach from a humble Scooby!!! :-)

It's just a good job you didn't try and overtake him :-)

Best.

So its the other drivers place to enforce a speed limit of hmm, say 110mph? Come on trails be realistic. The traffic in the middle lane at the time was travelling at less than 70mph. I wanted to travel at the speed limit. How the hell do I do this in the middle lane. If it is a crime to drive at 70 in the right hand lane/over-taking/the lane that isnt the left or central lane, surely the police would have something to say about it.
We all have to get along in this world, and the people who think its cool to race up behind another car and encourage them to go faster,( especially in rush hour traffic which seems to be the most common time of this occurance, just so that person can get home and watch TV) do not deserve to have a licence.

If you can move over do; we all have rear view mirrors for a reason and if I see someone approaching who appears to be moving faster than I am and I can move into the left hand lane safely then I do...equally if I am moving more quickly than the car in front and it is obvious they cannot move I will slow down maintaining my two second gap. And wait for them to (hopefully ), move.

My point is not to excuse inconsiderate or dangerous driving its to look at both sides of the story; how many times have you been held up by cars sitting in the overtaking lane when the other lanes(s), is empty?

BTW if you check your Highway code on driving on multi-lane carriageways you will find its not illegal to sit in any lane at 70mph, its just bad practise (manners?!), to do so...

Unfortunatly, the Highway code is out of date. There are far more cars on the road today than when it was written. If the over-taking lane was used for just that, think of the extra tailbacks.

No excuse for bad lane discipline IMHO, I get sick of drivers who will not move over when there is clearly space on the left and allow faster traffic past.

On most country roads, I get people being awkward, guess it's cos I've appeared from nowhere...

On Mway, people move out of the way sharpish, and seem to be "hesitant" to pass me.

Though they are probably thinking:
situation one: skoda?
situation two: police car?

The benefits of a white estate I guess...

Trails, I agree with lane disipline. Just not people who decide to use the over taking lane as an excuse to drive recklously. It means that honest people who are in the middle lane doing 50mph and would like to over-take, stand no chance when they indicate and move over in the 'over-taking' lane into the path of some idiot doing twice the speed limit.

Ian, Yeah, I think I'd hesitate for that reason too! :-)

When I was looking for my Scooby I saw a white UK MY00 for sale, rare colour in my experience! I was very tempted as I reasoned that some might think that the plod had just splashed out on a performance car to catch the joyriders and behave themselves around me. Just coudn't do it though! White is such a b*tch to keep clean and it looked *VERY* conspicious, even by Scooby standards!! I still like it though

Kudos to you for being brave!

Best.

Similar situation occured to be this morning on the way to work however it was a hood rat on a 50cc chicken chaser he overtook whilst i was in traffic with about .00001mm clearance and then proceeded weave left and right, break and accelerate, just to make the whole situation even more stupid/suicidal as he had no mirrors he was spending much of the time looking over his shoulder to check which direction i was going in so he could take the same route.
I just couldnt be ars*d to get angry (monday morning/rather get to work in one piece Ect) so indicated left well in advance watched nobby turn off as i drove straight on.
Why??????, was it the car, ive had a few run ins with other cars but never a 50cc ped, my car could easily annihilate the scroteped i just dont get it.
Anyway rant over i feel much better now, thank you

Must be honest and say you deserve to be cussed you if you pull out in front of anyone at 50mph regardless of the other car travelling at 70 or 170, that just sounds like a non-mirror user

Unless there is major congestion you have no excuse doing 50mph on a multi-lane carriageway, mostly you would be an accident catalyst and should have stuck to the B roads.

Not really, a white skoda estate is very plain, deliberately so... whereas you are right, white scoobs look great, almost too good!

But it is a *real* pain to keep clean... I keep saying I'l never buy another white car, but I am on my third!!

I'll learn eventually!

Oh No,

Here's another poor fool who thinks his car is a "Rally Car".

I'm afraid to tell you, that if you took your impreza round a real forest stage, it would more than likely limp out on three wheels if it was very lucky!

Here here!

Especially the 70mph speed limit.

Christ, the code was written when the braking distances for cars from 70 was 3 fecking miles.

I think most cars would have to limp home after being dragged around a rally forest stage! :-)

The point is that most people -even those who don't know much about motorsports- associate scoobys with WRC. That'll have something to do with the car giving us a couple of British WRC champions I guess ;-) It's not much of a leap to assume that the road going variant of the rally car will be pretty fast! :-)

Best.

its other peoples perception of the car, not the owners...

My point is this; the driver looks in the mirror, hmm, no car, indicates right, checks the mirror again, a car is visable but still way back, proceeds to pull out. I'm sorry, but people actually go through these motions before pulling out, yes? Some of us would see the car, anticipate that he might be doing 140mph and wait until the car has passed. Many others are thinking about other things such as, 'what the time is', hows the kids', how am I going to pay my visa bill?, rather than speed freaks.
I like to enjoy my car, but I, along with many others on here, choose to do so normally late at night with only a few cars on the road to minimise the risk.

I got my first '*****r gesture' yesterday

I was in the outside lane on the M25 doing only 80mph indicated, and this idiot in the inside lane goes out into the middle lane to overtake a lorry, and he then proceeds to come out into the right hand lane, still doing the 56mph he was doing behind the lorry. I guess he was trying to overtake the car that had just overtaken him, or something? Anyhow, I had to slam on my brakes to avoid ploughing into the back of him.

Now, people who do that (i.e. not check their mirrors) really **** me off, and I don't usually (ever?) do this, but I gave him the horn and a flash of the full beams, and then when he pulled over again I got the ****** sign

Oh well, maybe I overreacted, but his driving was terrible so I know who I think the *real* *****r is

if you see a vehicle approaching in your rear view you should always check at least twice or you have no perception of the speed he is trailing...not anticipation, just common sense and that is my main beef; some people seem to drive with their heads cut off. How about pulling out at roundabouts...how many times has someone pulled out when you are already on the roundabout and then WILL NOT look in your direction cause if they can't see you, you can't hurt them even if you have to jump on the brakes and I'm not talking about excessive speed; if its not derestricted I will follow the speed limit...

Its nigh on impossible to use all the performance of a car like an impreza (even a std one), on the road safely anyway but some times are less suitable than others (ie rush hour).

I must take a drive over to a county that has got a three lane road. The only time I overtake anything here I'm on the wrong side of the road and there isn't anyone behind flashing for me to get out of their way.

I've had one. ****** gesture, that is. I don't think the bloke understood the lanes on this particular bit of road. Or it might have been my bleached hair that was too much for him.....
