If theres 1 thing Ive found that the phases "you get what you pay for" suits its when buying a watch, obviously you can go way pver the top but its all about what do you call an expensive watch. mine costs around £500. Id call that alot of money for something like a watch buts its paid me back many times and Ive about broke even on it so every year from now Im better off..... £2k plus is stupid though IMO unless you have money to throw away then if so why not eh

Can't let this comment go. If this is an anti-capitalist statement, then you'd be driving round in a Toyota Starlet, not an Evo on which you've spent thousands. Utterly hypocritical of you to label spending money on watches as "pathetic" just because it isn't a priority of *yours*.

Christ, you should really hear yourself sometimes, moses.

Spend x hundred quid on a lada - handles like a bag of potatoes, is incredibly slow, has windy down windows, soggy seats, no safety gear (air bags etc) and has no air con etc
Spend x thousand pounds on a scoob / evo - handles like poo on a blanket, goes incredibly fast, has all the electrics, sports seats, air bags etc and air con...

Spend a hundred quid on a watch - it tells the time
Spend a few thousand on a watch - it tells the time - but you can check out the time a few hundred metres further under the sea! Wahey!

An expensive watch is an item of jewellery, it's primary function is not to tell the time.

A nice watch is no different o nice clothes or a nice house. Some people like them, some aren't bothered.

Or spend £50 on a casio with a battery that lasts 3-5 years, can change your TV channel. Checks your pulse rate, works out your burned off calories for the day. Tells the temperature. Stores the phone number of the bird you met in the pub (who thought you were a geek ). Shock proof. Doesn't need routine "cleaning" of it's internals (wtf is that excuse for a watch that looses time? ) Doesn't need winding or can be left on your bedside table all weekend without the need to re-wound. Has an alarm clock, has a light so you can see the time in the dark.....

Find me a Rolex that can do all that

(yes I did own a databank in the 80's - at least that didn't break)

Well, this topic seems to be splitting opinion. Not surprising really.

Thing is, when it comes to spending your own money, who's to say what likes and priorities are right and wrong?

Why buy a plasma when a £100 14" tv from Sainsburys "will do"?

Why buy a top-notch hi-fi, when a £100 Sony midi "will do"?

Why buy a Saville Row suit, when the market £40 one "will do"?

Why go on an exotic holiday, when Scarborough "will do"?

These are all threads I intend to start today!!

"I have **** all cash and make comments like this as a front to cover up for the fact that I'm bitter because I can't afford one."
I do have **** all cash because I plough all my money into my business's and have no interest in a salary untill such a time as I have a wife or family to support I have a passion for what I do and will always be more committed to the quality of service I provide than simply getting as much money as possible . I do have a rolex and a rado watch worth a pound or two but I am sometimes unsure of my own motivation in wearing the former as I am not sure how much of my appreciation of it is down to how much of a status symbol it is. I am no longer convinced the level of craftmanship is reflected in the price so in short I probably do wear it becuase of phallic insecurities although my ***** is actualy huge.

I would never have considered an expensive watch until very recently. But I can get a pretty good discount on some of them, so its something Im now considering.*

I understand the point of the question. I actually decided that if I was to buy one it wouldnt be for every day use. But for Going Out or Formal occassions. Think thats a kind of justification?
Ive got a G-Shock for the more everyday bump n grind

Though at the back of my mind Id be very consious of the amount of money, the less savoury elements would like to relieve me of.

*No, there will be no Group Buys. Sorry

Nice input guys, mostly. The usual Scoobynet fraternity saying 'pointless thread', 'stupid question' etc reared their ugly heads and retarded mentalities.

Anyway, I remain unconvinced about spending £2k-£3k on a watch unless you have an exceptionally high salary/disposable income or masses of savings. Taking a loan out or repaying over 12 months is sheer stupidity for something that just tells you the time.

As for good looks, you can get some nice Lorus/Sekonda/Seiko watches.

As for reliability, a Casio G-shock with 10-year battery will outperform most of the luxury exotica costing thousands!

So it basically boils down to having a 'label' - the very epitomy of chav behaviour!

A case of sour grapes and I can't have it so I'll knock anyone who can. Have you actually read the replies or have you discounted them because you didn't like them? You can't see immediately what type of watch I have as its quite simple in design. You don't know me or my fiscal status - I don't shout about it

I've a nice watch and dont give a toss what any one else thinks, I tend not to be judgemental. Each to their own, its just a good job we are not all the same ......
Do what you want, spend YOUR money on what you wish, just dont interfere with any one elses right to freedom .... but you do have a right to think what you will.

Good thread though ........
Merry Christmas.
