Only because we were asked - I don't shout about the watches I own, but you'd expect a lot of people who own expensive watches to comment on threads titled "why don't you buy an expensive watch"/"why do you buy an expensive watch" .

You either get it, or you don't; you either have the cash or you don't - I'll never be able to convince someone that an expensive watch is worth it unless they have the same values as me, and I wouldn't want to try - and by the same token don't assume that everyone who owns an expensive watch is an attention seeking, show off with more money than sense.

Each to their own - it makes no difference to me which watch you wear or what value you place on it.

But that's my point Gareth, most people you see wearing these watches (although they could be fake) haven't got the money.

My watch is expensive. I don't shout about it but I have shown it off on occasion I do admit. It's a piece of miniature precision engineering excellence. No battery required. Fully automatic.

I will pass it down through my family.

It isn't just a tool to tell the time.

It all depends what your into.

We all spend more than we should on things we want. I would consider £1000 on a watch a complete waste of my money.
But then I would probably spend £1000 on a Hifi Interconnect cable.

The watch would be hid behind my shirt sleeve and tells the same time as my £40 Sekonda.
The Interconnect is sat behind my hifi rack but at least it makes the sound better.

To someone who isn't into hifi or watches we have both wasted £1000.

Spend your money on what you want I say.
Some people do try and ram it down your throat though.

Cheers

One for each arm?

There would be absolutely no point in having three though surely?

Whats wrong with 2 watches? I have three cars after all

One on my arm the other awaiting delivery, should be in the next few weeks. Will be wearing the stainless steel one to work.

I don't wear a watch, prefering instead an enormous kitchen clock round my neck, rather like "Flavor Flav" of Public Enemy used to.

Yep I have multiple cars but cars can have different uses.

One for towing, one being ecomical and for shopping leaving in town centers, a performance car. Yep I can understand anyone needing multiple cars.

But as long as I know what tme of day it is I can't get why I would need multiple expensive watches.

Cheers

You can't or don't want to?

Simply, an expensive watch went with the house, car, clothes, income, etc, years gone by.

It used to be part of a package.

It no longer has to. As long as an individual has the required amount of money to purchase an expensive watch, they can.

Whereas there is a genuine love for a decent watch by a few, there is also a fair number of people who think that buying one makes them look well off, as they walk back to their average car, and drive home to their average home.

I've seen them, it doesn't work.

What it does do is detract from the beauty of a decent watch, a bit like when certain cars become a sort of joke the more affordable they become.

I see your point there, and there may well be a few who look on a watch like that - especially if they buy a fake - but either you know a lot of people like that, or you're prepared to make a sweeping assumption.

As in your quote "if you have the required amount of money to buy a watch, they can" - its a possession after all, and its not a requirement to have a stately home and an herititory title to buy one - if thats what you mean about having the money.

We all buy different things for different reasons - if someone doesn't understand why a watch costing £X thousand is worth more to me than a watch costing £ 50, then I wont convince them....but I don't feel guilty about it

Cheers Sir Gareth

but the watch always tells people I'm not actually on the dole or about to rob them
so the watch is for the benefit of other people??
...says it all really.

Spoon I think I hear what you are saying - all a mans posessions should equally reflect his overall status and income???

I'm not sure why you continue to want this olde fashionede way? Aquiring aspirations tends to make people work harder and be better members of society. Aspiring to a nice watch (20 years ago only found on the truly wealthy) is no different to aspiring to a big telly/nice car. It's mostly marketing driven no doubt, but as long as spending the money gives satisfaction and pleasure (ohh and the kids dont go hungry!) I think its fine. Some people waste money on crappy cars or overexpenisve double glazing/carpets >yawn<. You can take a watch with you

D

I used to call my dad a jimmy saville wannabe for having a 30k watch
(now I call him a puff daddy wannabe) I contented my self with nice rado that was really small understated, elegant and classy . However after years of pisstaking I got given a christmas prezzie of a blingy raljex and immediately abandoned the classy watch for the blingy watch and definately got to enjoy the look and feel of a rolex. Now I have grown up a bit I think I would prefer the individuality of the rado as its rarer and looks less Arthur Daily but I definately changed my mind on flash watches once I got used to one on my wrist. I will probably swap the two over if I can find the rado and let the raljex gather dust for a while.

If you know what you are doing, an expensive watch can be an investment. I used to buy them at auctions (minimum bids only), wear them for a while, until someone else offers me a premium to part with them. Once even managed to sell 3 PP and 2 VC watches at one go to 2 collectors for what seemed like very good prices, but then came the Asian financial crisis and currency devaluations and I can't bear to buy them again at the present exchange rate, so I am presently PP'less.
To have a car collection, you need a big garage, but for a watch collection, you only need a drawer. And a old PP watch beats an old Maserati Biturbo anytime. I know as I had both before.

You're unlikely to wear your P1 on your wrist and, unless you have watch insurance, it's probably better covered in case of accident, theft or loss.

Loss or damage would be major worries for me wearing a watch of any value on a daily basis.

I'll stick to my £100 Rotary. It looks nice and tells the time.

Having said that, I bet there's thousands of people think Scooby owners are mad to put up with the running costs for something thats "only transport"

Id just get another one Anyway, cars are much more expensive and they get left parked unattended. Even though with car insurance you might not get its true replacement value, will have to pay excess and will affect your insurance next time round and personal bits and pieces wont be covered, protected bonus or not.
