It's not that they are crap.

If you have little white headphones everyone knows you are listening to the most superior MP3 player known to man and mugs you for it.

Most muggers wouldn't touch Phillips

Listened to an Ipod and an Iriver, the Iriver sounded better and had an FM radio built in, plus it doesnt make me look like somebody who would buy an Ipod, for gods sake the next step is a Mini Cooper.

I must say that I haven't heard the iRiver but did hear reports that it sounds better than the iPod (I have an iPod) what I will say is that the iPod is surprisingly neutral. I expect most of those things to have a little presence peak built in so the "experts" don't describe it as "flat" or similar but the iPod doesn't seem to have that. It must be said that I'm just listening on little Sony earphone things I have which are hardly reference monitors, on the other hand I am aware of the faults with them and so am fairly confident in describing the iPod as neutral.

I wonder does the iRiver have a little presence peak and perhaps a bit of bass boost which makes it sound "better" than the Apple? This is possible I suppose, as for most people "better" rarely means flat or neutral in engineering terms.

I only bought the iPod for listening on the bus, plane etc. but have been impressed by how flat the output is, and it works fine for the job. Must try to get the chance to put it on some measuring gear at some point to see what it really looks like as it can play wav files so I can get some reference levels into it.

Jeeze guys handbags at ten paces!!!!!

I don't care how good any of them are, my Christmas pressie was an iPod, I've never had one before, the earbuds aren't the best, but it's still extremely good sound for when I am on my training regime cycling around. I didn't pay for it so can't complain.

Lol, exactly! Plus you can sell your iPod headphones to a chav on eBay so he can use them on his Alba cassette walkman and impress his mates (until one of them robs him thinking he's got an iPod).

My wife bought me a Sony NW-HD1. Smaller and far classier IMHO with its brushed metal case. None of this nasty plastic iVor the engine.... Apple really is the AudiTT of the electronics world!

I got my FM transmitter from http://www.podgear.net/products.html works pretty good, i can live with it knowing it holds a shed loads more songs than my autochanger.

Bose docking station i got is very very good too, bit pricey but good quality.

Well I got an iPod Photo for Xmas. Excellent bit of kit and very easy to use. Headphones are cr@p, but I've never liked any of the in-ear ones anyway. Already have plenty of good quality ones, so no great shakes to change them.

Sound quality is just as good as any other MP3 player I've used. Not sure what people really want or expect from any mobile player Sitting on a train or using it in the gym is hardly the perfect place to worry about sound reproduction.

As for getting mugged. Suppose if you live in some crime-ridden English city then you're probably living in fear of your life on a daily basis anyway so doubt an iPod will increase your risk much

So who are the smart ones; those that paid for a supposedly inferior fashion item or those that just convinced their relations to pay for it

Happy Xmas everyone,

Stefan

bought the i-pod for the boys christmas and was most dissapointed to find it would only download one song from a list of 87 .kept coming up with a error36.had to upload factory settings .then a folder icon was displayed with an exclamation mark. which i could not remove.after trying everything somehow it started to work again and finally it uploaded the 87 songs only to erase them again.ordered over the net from amazon.they are sending out another one.hope it works.only downloaded songs from my own cd collection.where can you download songs from the net for free.someone told me you can only download certain formats.is this true?

the philips hdd070 has a major design flaw, being that the hard-drive is a ticking timebomb. i would never ever advise anyone to buy one, as they are pure crap.

The I-Iriver iHP140 is the only Harddrive recorder with its value imo

Oh, I see ..... a shop assistant,

Thats funny, I have a friend who owns a large electrical store - he sold me my second Philips HDD070, he didn't mention anything about reliability problems?

How many have you sold 'out' and how many have been 'returned faulty'?

I'll ask him his figures to compare, maybe you had a faulty batch??

A lot? 5? 10? 15?

And now you don't sell them to anyone? So? how many did you send back to Philips, unsold?

Its covered under a 12 month warranty - I've had one for 6 months, no bother?

i'd say if u take 10 and multiply it by 5 u'd be close to the amount sent back, i've seen the O60's coming back 4 months/6months/8months down the line faulty and even more disturbingly the 070's coming back within days with hardrive failures

50!! Thats a LOT of returns ....... I've looked on the web and can't find a lot of complaints? Just the usual numbers that you would expect.

Some people just can't use them, there are the faulty ones, the ones treated wrong, the units that have locked up (as mine has and the owners haven't a clue how to reset it)

But 50 is a lot - how many have you sold then? 500? as a 10% return rate is still bad!

pslewis ur acting quite childish about this, it is a fact that they are unrealiable if u know anyone honest who has contacts with philips u will find out that this is the case. i would say that the percentage rate of returns on them would be around 60 to 70% to be honest

I'm not being childish .... really, you have got me VERY concerned

I mean, I could have bought an iPod (looked like a right dork, yes, but at least it would last longer than 2 weeks and wasn't made out of chocolate!)

Could you point me to some news, some comments, some article, something, somewhere, that tells me that these things are complete rubbish??

i actually had a look on the net for some customer reviews but i couldnt find anything, i suggest u trawl around google.

if it aint broke be thankful, if it ever does fail they just replace the hard-drive with the exact same model as the last one (which will fall victim to the same problem as i've seen before). if something does go wrong i'd try and push to get it exchanged for a creative Zen Micro, costs a bit more but its an awesome little machine.

Pete, try http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...e+secret&meta= for some negative feedback, I'm surprised you haven't come across the video before!

I looked too - got positive feedback, but not much negative (on the Philips HDD070 that is ...... plenty of problems on the iPod it would seem though!)

You say, 'If, it ain't broke ........' by what you were saying I stand a 70% chance of it failing (in fact, I have two! - bought one for my daughter at xmas, mine has been so good for 6 months)

What, exactly IS the problem then? You will know what the complaints have been, you have seen loads come back - I mean 50!! Was it always the same problem? I guess it would be with a 70% return rate!

You have got me really worried now, as I have two of these and the chances of having two GOOD ones must be really slim!!

That's so old and incorrect. There are many replacement batterys available that you can install yourself, and some that increase running time significantly.

Why is every iPod thread hijacked by losers banging on about how great their inferior imitations are?

Always the same few too. If you are that insecure about your purchase that you must continue to spread ill-informed rubbish on this BBS then I suggest you return your iSore at the earliest convenience, go out and buy yourself an iPod.

The Neistat brothers have openly admitted they both own iPods and love them, they have also gone on record to say much of what they say on the video is enhanced with lots of artistic license. The iPod battery problems are identical to the degeneration you would get with a mobile phone, so expect the same type of life expectancy from the same type of battery. Also iPod batteries can be bought direct from Apple and / or numerous other places round the web.

If you listen to what the staff at PC World tell you then more fool you.

Quick Reply: So how many people got ipods..!!!
