Register the car in your fathers name; he doesnt need to leave Japan surely? If there is any legal implication then get his power of attorney, this will enable you to act on his behalf. VOSA are bound to tell you that it must be registered by your father but really; how will they know who theyre dealing with? As long as all of the required documents are available then you should be able to do it..... To prove ownership copy the initial registration and get the car serviced straight away and keep the invoice; when it leaves itll be de-registered with your father as the last keeper. These three documents will establish that he owned the vehicle for 6 months.

Failing all else you might register it in Cyprus which is now part of the EEC; but everything seems a little more laid back there.

What is a Personal Import?

With effect from 1 February 2001 you are a personal importer only

a. if the vehicle has been imported by a person entering the United Kingdom;

b. that person had, at the time the vehicle was imported, been normally resident in a country other than the United Kingdom for a continuous period of at least 12 months;

c. that person intends to become normally resident in the United Kingdom;

d. the vehicle has been in the possession of that person and used by him in the country where he has been normally resident for a period of at least 6 months before its importation; and

e. the vehicle is intended for his personal or household use in the United Kingdom

S.B.: your post is phrased as an arguement but I really dont see what your point is? VV's father meets the above criteria; VV is a member of the importer's household and VV can act on his father's behalf legally with a power of attorney, which takes 5 minutes to type and sign. All they have to do is wait until the 12 month and 6 month minimum periods are met.

Failing that; offload it in Cyprus and register it there.....
