The underlying architecture of VMS and NT are actually very similar and I have heard it said, although I'm not sure how much of an urban myth this is, that some of the comments in the source code for NT make direct references to VMS.

Apparently the guy who designed NT used to work for DEC. DEC at the time did'nt want a PC O/S and allowed him to take his ideas to MS.

In a rough order,
Christmas '85 - Amstrad CPC 464 (was slowly expanded with external 3" drive, 64K RAM pack, Action Relay(remember them?), tv tuner, etc)
'86/'87 - ZX+ brought 2nd hand.
'89 - Atari 1040 STe
'92 - Everything sold for a 486SX-25 with 4Mb Ram and 105Mb harddisk, brought from Watford Electronics. That was slowly upgraded, think eventually it was a 486DX4-100.

Uni intervened and then had various work machines, mostly Dells.

'99 Bought a Sony Vaio PII 366 laptop - which I still have.
'03 Built a Althon XP2100+ based system.
Also have a little Dell PowerEdge which runs as my Exchange server. Have a work issued HP NX widescreen laptop which is of some sort of Centrino favour.

Was toying with buying Retro-gamer in the newsagents the other day!

...cor, a few years ago, I could've sold you a Sequent NUMA-Q Quad running DYNIX/ptx...Oracle flew on that platform, especially the last generation Centurion 900 Quads....of course, can whip that now with a p5-590 64w!! 3.2million tpmC anyone??

Yep the oric1 there was quite a few lesser known models, like the jupiter ace built by two eggheads that worked on the spectrum, the camputers lynx, all the cruddy msx machines, hmmm there was some more, ah yes sharp mz80k...anymore...

1973 - did some FORTRAN programming in school with the coding sheets being sent off to Jordanhill College each week and a bundle of punch cards and a printout of why the program hadn't worked coming back the following week.
1975 - can't remember what the system was, but College had something newer which allowed us to program from the keyboard without using punch cards. Still FORTRAN,
1982 - Spectrum (BASIC)
1986 - Apricot using CP/M for COBOL programming.
1987 - IBM AT followed by an IBM PS/2 model 60 (286)
1988 - IBM PS/2 model 80 (now up to a 25MHx 386)
1993 - 486SX
1995 to present day - various things for work up to a 2GHz IBM Thinkpad for everyday use. Various Sun stuff from Sparc5 to Blades.

2GHz thing for home use.

When I had the Spectrum I originally bought the 16K version. It cost £125 and the 48K version was £175. I bought a memory upgrade for £35 and installed it myself. At these rates, the 512MB RAM in my current PC would cost £560,000.

It's probably going to finally get completely replaced once Athlon 64 becomes a bit cheaper.

Back in the day my dad bought me my first computer the Atari 65XE (wished I got a speccy), the rest I'll just list...
Master System (for double dragon, completed it a MILLION times)
48K Spectrum (the daddy)
128K Spectrum+ (with external tape drive)
Amiga 500 (Deluxe Paint 3 baby!)
Amiga 1200 (with a very broken AGA chip)
Swapped that for a CD32
Amiga 1200 (which worked), upgraded that with a 120gb harddrive, 68030/50mhz(and FPU), 10mbs Ram and a CDROM
MegaDrive and MegaCD (I know it was crap but I loved the MegaCD)
Playstation 1 (Which I sold in under 2 months)
AMD K6-300 (my first PC, it was dire)
AMD K6-500 (self built this time, not too bad, but not too good either)
Amiga 1200 (bought as a complete unit which was towered, had a 68060/50mhz, PowerPC 603e/240mhz, still got it, classic machine even though it likes to set itself on fire)

And currently I have 2x Athlon 2000XP machines, 1700XP machine, 1200 duron, and a 800 athlon.

Oh, if we are talking work computers...

I think the smallest "big" machine I had access to was an Amdahl mainframe, 8 watercooled processors running in excess of 40MIPS, hooked up to 2 StorageTek robotic silos.

Not only was this on-site, it was also on the Gatwick flight path.... disaster recovery anyone?
