So are we still seen as rich country's after pledging £950 million to Asia???

We are one of the World's rich countries and we would have no excuse for not donating a hefty sum of cash to help those poor people whose lives have been utterly destroyed to get back on their feet and to save them from further disaster such as disease and famine.
On the other hand I do agree in many ways with what Iwan said about gross corruption and the thieving of the money etc by unprincipled leaders of those countries which he mentioned.
If foreign aid is given to poorer countries, then those who give it should make absolutely sure that it goes to those who need it.

Blair's comments about how generous he thinks the British people have been with their donations worries me.
It won't go unnoticed by this goverment that there is still some disposable income around in society that can be exploited..
Expect hefty tax and council tax rises by them in the wake of this.

I wonder how much Osama has pledged!!!!

Guessing by your posts, I'm guessing that 'we' is europe and USA? Even the title of the thread is flawed. WE have not given Asia £950mil. Most has come from Asia.
What Bin Laden has to do with anything or 'his muslim followers' is beyond me ...as far as I am aware he does not run any country and therefore does not collect tax from the public. Also when he says 'we do nothing' I think he says it in relation the Israel/Palestine conflict (which BTW is true, as we do not do anything).
Sound like you have a real uneducated chip on your shoulder about certain issues and that you do not believe in helping out those in need. That much you have made clear.
Thankfully your views are not those of everybody else or these poor people in Asia would have no aid.

I think it’s quite rational and fair to question the continual throwing cash at world problems issues without necessitating anyone being painted a callous selfish sod.
Whilst I gladly gave money to the tsunami victims it however did not make me ponder any less as to the questionable long term success of Live Aid #1 or the need for an annual Children in Need event. Indeed why should Tesco be buying computers for schools via my shopping bill, or why should patients’ families have to club together to buy dialysis machines?
These questions are nothing to do with palming off any victims’ suffering – we all have compassion for the innocent (and the cash!).

The trouble with these appeals, rock concerts etc is that they are only a one off very short term solution to the problem.
10,000s of lives could have been saved just by having an early warning system in place. But the cost of this and who was going to pay for it has stopped it from happening.
This system was known to be needed as there have been a few tsunamis in the area over the last 100 years or so which have killed over 120,000 people.
It'll take years if not decades to put things back into place in this area. Some places also relied on tourism as their main source of income, which has been all but wiped out for many years to come.
The donations, help need to carry on for many years to come to make a difference to these people.

What you say is probably true UB, but if they do get in government again they will plunder again anyway regardless of what has been donated.
As ever all will be sweetness and light until they think they have conned us and Old Labour yet again and then watch out!
