Griefs a personal thing as is how you choose to deal with it - being bullied into repeated minutes of silence by the media / colleagues / folk on BBS's is absurd - I shall continue about my daily life at noon and pity help anyone who "Shh's" me....

Would that be as a method for commiting suicide or in the name of research?

OK, we are nit picking, the point being some people do choose how they die, look at all the stuff in the news about assisted suicides and people travelling abroad to die and so on. I admit it is not the norm, but it does happen. Most of us try to prolong our life as much as possible so we don't get a choice it just happens.

Good article. *nods*

STI Wanna Subaru
Excellent article - puts the mixture of individual thought against emotional extortion really well.
As I've said in other threads we've all had tragedies in our lives and to respect a minute or 3 silence is a purely personal thing. If someone wants to call me a heartless git by not observing it, I'll tell them my story and watch the embarrasment on their face as they try to think what to say.

Well put.
I'm with Astraboy & Leslie on this one.
There is nothing altruistic about public grief or telling everyone how much you have given to the fund.
How I feel about the thousands who lost their lives & how much I donated to the appeal is my business.
I don't want anything to devalue the two minute silence at 1100hrs on 11/11 where it is considered enough time to reflect on such things as the one million lives that were lost at the Battle of the Somme alone.

Darren

The only people at work who observed this were receptionists. I know because when collecting something they both gave me blank looks when I asked them about it, it was then that I noticed big ben was donging on the TV. Made a hasty retreat back upstairs where everybody was nattering away still.

It would have passed me by had I not tried to log onto scoobynet at the moment it was happening, I have taken the next 10 minutes to read this thread and digest what people are saying. I was actually coming to start a thread with exactly the same motives as astra boy.

24 hour news media is not a good thing, and is used to manipulate pulic opinion rather than report the material facts, and to be honest it is being forced upon us from more side than that. If I remember I personally will be trying to log onto scoobynet on the 11th of November at 11.00am just to check that this gesture of rememberance today is not a publicity grabbing pat on the back for the people in charge...

I am not evil or calious, I am just realistic about what happens in the world, and do not feel that I should be told when to feel sad, show grief or get happy etc...

Thumbs down

When a solider goes into battle he or she knows the risks.
Millions of civilians were killed in WW1 and WW2 along with millions of soldiers, many of whom were called up (in WW1) - they didnt chose to fight.

Yes its very harsh that 200,000 people probably died in the Tsunami, but the 3mins silence was not neccessary imo, and government using the disaster for some positive PR isnt on.

Quite unbelievable thread to be honest. It surely isnt the case that 3 mins silence is worth more than 1 mins silence ? The point is to make it different NOT more worthy. 2 mins silence is to remember the 2 world wars. 3 Mins just makes it different.

All 140 of us in my office kept silent and were happy to do so. This was a pure natural disaster - there were no political issues or man made reasons. Africans starving is a pure function of the continents incredible corruption and war. Zimbabwe was doing fine until Mugabe destroyed their economy. It is just as sad that they are dying - but it is different.

If you cant see it then dont do anything to remember the Tsunami dead. For me it is personal as I know people who have died - if you dont then it is no sadder than any death around the world, so you have to do what your conscience dictates.

i turned on the radio at i now know was 12:01

Thought it was broken and was thinking someone was going to get fired for muting radio 1 for a couple of minutes

For what its worth, i was technically silent- although that was totally by accident (working from home alone).
I was however, talking to myself- so i guess that makes me an evil/thoughtless/dont give a sh*t type person

Totally over the top

Actually no it is to remember all the service men & women who have given their lives for this country & others in WWI & WWII and all conflicts since.

It's not cool or trendy to observe the world war silences anymore. I've had a few big heads asking how much I've donated at work this week, because they've apparently given...in their words 'a substantial amount'. Why do they need to tell me this, or even ask if I've donated.

So when should there be a silence, or not be one? There was a major earthquake in Iran last year, 10's of thousands killed, but no 3 minute silence?

its very simple......we give silence to those issue with close limks to home...the closer the link the better chance of silence.

dead in Iran.....no one knows anyone in Iran...no one goes there...nil points

dead in holiday resorts......some people know the dead, some people have been....+ LOTS dead....lots of points

dead in WTC.....not THAT many dead but they are westerners and LOTS of peole have been there....lots of points

dead in Indian flood....see Iran above...no points

The closer to home the less numbers are needed......best example being the Soham case.

Note that "close to home" has racial/geographical attributes as well....hence there is no silence for the girls shot dead in that gang thing a while back.

T

it aint a nice way to do it but it is how silence is awarded.

If they were white girls, it would have been a whole different story.

I can't believe what I am reading here.... The three minute silence is not important.... the sheer scale of this IS...

WHOLE GENERATIONS HAVE BEEN WIPED OUT.... OUR PLANET'S ROTATION HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY ALTERED BY THE EVENT!! (MORE ENERGY WAS RELEASED DURING THE QUAKE THAN 1 MILLION HIROSHIMAS.).. DEATH AND DESTRUCTION HASN'T BEEN SEEN ON THIS SCALE SINCE THE LAST WORLD WAR BUT THE LAST WORLD WAR WAS A RESULT OF MANKIND'S WARPED SENSE OF SELF PRESERVATION (I.E. OO-ER WE WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE AND PRESERVE OUR WAY OF LIFE.... I KNOW LETS DESTROY THOSE WHO THINK DIFFERENTLY.........ETC.ETC....) A NATURAL DISASTER ON THIS SCALE HAS NOT OCCURED FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS

I'm sorry but those of you who cannot see the point in a 3, 2 minute, 30 minute silence make me sick.... Surely it is a sign of compassion of humanity of RESPECT FOR THE DEAD?????? To complain that "they get a longer silence than us!!!!!!!" is, quite frankly beyond me... If you don't want to (or quite simply can't) stay quiet for three minutes then don't.... but don't gripe about those of us that do want to show a liitle respect....

PUT YOURSELF IN THIER FAMILIES SHOES.... IMAGINE HAVING LOST YOUR SON, DAUGHTER, WIFE, HUSBAND, MOTHER, FATHER.... QUITE POSSIBLY IN 1 FELL SWOOP AND THEN IMAGINE READING SOME OF THE POSTS ON HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paul

you should do some research before you hit the cpas lock...there are other disasters (natural) with worse results than this but they didnt happen where we go on our holls.

Saint Ken of Liverpool got a whole minute to himself.

Sets the bar. By that reckoning we should have been sat in silence till sometime this summer.

Anyway to the de-railed side topic, the TPS can only act against calls made in this country, not abroad as I found out when I called them about the annoying nuisance, pre-recorded crap.
