driving my WR1 on the first day of ownership a bl00dy road sign was kicked up bt the car in front (a scoob funnily enough) and it put a nice scratch on my bonnet and flattened loads of the IC fins - as it got sucked in through the scoop!

They are legal matey ... been pulled over by the feds 11 times during my 8 months of ownership and the last time they checked on the harnesses and agreed that they were absolutely legal.
You get used to them after a while and with the quick release system and fast ratchet on the rally spec ones you get get in and out just as quick with practise.

Yeh I know tell me about it!!! Mostly it's for nothing other than a check but a couple of times I've un-knowingly given an unmarked fed car a sonic boom.

I have 3" OMP FIA approved harnesses and a removable roll cage from safety devices - when i'm on track I use these, plus a helmet obviously. On the road I use the diagonal lap belt as it is so much easier, more comfortable and is designed to let you move sideways if the roof comes in. Lots of cars roll, not just on track...
Harnesses must be mounted at shoulder height i.e. onto a roll cage or a suitably reinforced back shelf as they can put inordinate forces through the neck and shoulders in a shunt otherwise if mounted down at back seat level, and should ideally be used with fixed back seats anyway
A harness on the road is a massive pain in the ****, just wait til you have fiddled with the belts to do them up for the 10th time and then realised that you can't reach the door to pull it shut (again) or to get anything out of the glove compartment etc etc. To use them on the road is unnecessary and IMHO as ***** a pose as neons or flamers.
