I have family in Tenerife (probably the chavviest holiday destination of them all) and yet I spend next to no time in Playa de Las Americas (Los Christianos is a nicer "tourist" bit) and there's some amazing scenery and local bars and restaurants and some lovely, yet almost deserted beaches around the place.
Package holidays suck, all inclusive is boring (who wants to eat in the same place every night?). Get off the beaten track and live a little.
We even went to Cancun on a bed only basis with very little money (eating in downtown Cancun is a great experience, as long as you survive )

Not at all.Place I stayed in had loads of restaurants, a good variety of the local stuff, plus if you wanted chinese Italian etc etc it was all there, a few of them were a la carte also. Package holidays are popular for a good reason, they are all laid on and generally a hassle free option.
Did eat out a few times whilst in Cancun, but the quality was nowhere near the hotels standards.
