The 3.2 V6 vectra was awarded an insurance grouping two points lower than it's performance would suggest, at group 15 I believe, simply because its safety and security exceeded NCAP requirements by a large margin. Think about that when you're paying group 19 or 20 for your scoob.

Valid point. I travel up and down the M1 so the safety aspect is a consideration for a car that will be my "daily drive".

I stopped buying cars to look "cool" at the age of 20.

I can "be" cool in my track car and learn to drive fast in a car specifically for that purpose. There's nothing cool about driving up the M1 everyday so a GSI is ideal.

Neither as it's not necessary - you did the thread, not me....

I like GSI's - that's enough in my book.

If this debate was about a track car I'd value your input, but it's just a road car. All are basically much of a muchness and serve a purpose. I like the Vectra cos it has everything I've said and is good value for money, better (value for money) than anything else because many are made.

Earlier Vectra's, lesser models were poor and that has tarnished the Vectra name - which suits me cos I'll be getting a 22k car, 2 yrs old for 11k.

....and the only common between the crap old ones and the new ones is the name.

My old GSI was excellent, the new version is better. I really don't see the problem.

Ugly man steps out of Porsche.

Good looking man steps out of GSI.

......I know which I'd rather be.

(....and no Gary, I would not be the ugly bloke stepping out of a Vectra).

I pride on my appearance; not the car I drive.

innit.

Failing to see how people can say "accord" and "rover 75" whilst saying the vectra is an old man's car!

Anyway, IMHO, Vauxhalls are generally very good for munching motorway miles, with torquier engines on average than Ford's. For what you're talking about, IMHO it's a very good car. I wouldn't use one on a track day, but then again I believe a Scoob is for too heavy to be a good track car either.

SAP,

You're just contradicting yourself (you do that a lot don't you?) You say whether an X type is actually any better for what you want, probably not, but then a GSI Vectra is not actually any better for what you want than a 2.2Sri/GLX, or a 2.0 mondeo.

You can get an ST220 mondeo, 2 years old <20k miles for £12k - slightly more, but I'd bet it's loads cheaper to run (taking depreciation into account) than the vauxhall.

What about an Alfa 166? Get a 2yo 30k jobbie for that.....

You do care what people think, if you didn't, you wouldn't post so much about what people think on xyz would you?

Bear in mind, your "bargain" 50% cheaper than new 11k vauxhall, will probably lose 50% over the next 2 years as well. You'd be much better off getting an older "better" car imo.

But then you never listen to anything apart from your own opinions, so my opinion doesn't really mean much does it

Gutmann posted about the Vectra. I was just going to buy one on the quiet and get on with it.

Vectra GSI and a stripped out cheap-ish track car sounds good to me. As for the new Vectra, it is a very good motor car. I like V6's, I like having a new ish motor with all the kit, a nice warranty and peace of mind that it'll work.

I'm amazed at everyones "opinion" to be quite honest cos I don't remember asking for them on this point (Vectra).

Over.

....and i do NOT want a ST220. Granted they look nicer but IMHO Fords are nowhere near as solid as a Vauxhall.

.....and as a final point, has anybody considered that I actually quite like the GSI??

I used to own a 2.5 GSI and liked the car alot, pound for pound is probably the best all round car I've owned - it never gave me any attitude at all. The new car is better - so why not.

Over....and OUT.

I got my new age Vectra thing today. It's on an 03 plate. Not sure what sized engine it is although i can tell it's not a very big one!

The only downsides i can see in the car (other than a small engine) is that with the arm rest the hand brake is a job to use and the collar that you use to get the car into reverse is too small, making it a job to do a 3 point turn!

Yes - I'm not eferring to this post I'm referring to your countless others where you want an opinion on something you want.

I don't understand why you need the "back up" from a body of people that you don't know.

That in itself, show's you are either uncomfortable with your decision and need reassurance, or you do actually care what you are in you just pretend you're not.

You've said your previous vectra never gave you any trouble, so why the need for a warranty? You're paying over the odds for your own self doubts. You can get a much nicer car, with hugely better ownership prospects than a Vectra, for the same money.

As to the quality differences with fords, I'll have to disagree again. Current Vaxhall interiors are similar to late 80s VWs.

Or do you want a GSI because they reflect your persona? Ultimately dull but jazzed up with a few add ons?

Yes, I did post on other vehicles - as many do on here? i thought that was the point of "other marques". I've had a good think and decided on a track car (Golf GTI Mk2 likely) and a nice motor for the road.

I like the Vectra GSI. I looked at one only last week and was impressed. Interior is opinion based but compared to a Ford they are alot more solid feeling motors.

I can't believe grief over a lad buying a car which is perefectly suited to his needs.

Yes, I'm dull. Thanks Crag.

If you want a "nice motor" for the road, for £11k why get a Vectra? Cos it,s newish and has got a warranty?

Why not a 330i? Ticks all the boxes surely? Much nicer, quality car. Or is it not good enough 'cos it's older. Or can't you take BM's without an M badge?

This isn't giving you grief. Just make your mind up and stop seeking reassurance for your decisons ffs.

330i is a nice car , just for 11k it's gonna have atleast 70k on the clock already isn't.

Craig, I didn't start the thread mate. (ffs), and unless something else attracts my notice I have made my mind up.

AGAIN - it was not me that started this thread, nor did I ever say (as the thread titles) that a GSI is "cool".

Steve ........

The easy way for you to stop taking this all to heart is to stop posting on the thread. But i know you cant do that mate coz you have to have the last word

I think what Craig was trying to point out was that you are a very opinionated person as your many other threads show and from that he has deduced that you do infact care what other people think .....lets face it you wouldnt be replying on this thread if you didnt.

Anyway shut the **** up ......go buy your track car and get it sorted and at bedford in Feb
