if he doesnt know much about cars the bmw 6 series or merc sl or maybe even the maserati 4200 or quattaporte: luxury, auto boxes and fast. doesnt sound like hes lookin for a gt or stripped out racer.

I must be mad, but there's just something about it that makes me want one! 
And no, I doubt it would be *worth* £80k, but if I'm quite happy to spend £100k on a car then who gives a cr*p!
I reckon it would be a rewarding experience, but maybe I'm just wierd..

To choose the right car for him, we need to know what he's after in a car? He already has an everyday car, so I suppose there are two main camps in the 100K league:

Firstly it should be reasonably depreciation proof, though not forgetting the running costs
.Secondly the right car should have both driveability and poseability so no need to choose between the two. You would obviously loose out on a bit of handling and performace to a modern supercar, but on the plus side it should have more character and is less restricted by modern regs so should sound better than a modern supercar.
Thirdly a rare supercar gives you that bit of individuality and can also result in invitations do to some quite fun things. Also if you want to enter a restricted list event a rare car is more likely to get a place than a relatively 'common' car such as a Ferrari 308, 328 (as beautiful as they are), or 348.
I took this route (not that I had 100k to spend at the time) and have not regretted it since. (Oh except when the big repair bills come in Doh)

What about a Audi RS6 for around £40k, then have the AMD Stage 5 RS 600 engine conversion for £30k which would take the power to 613bhp and 600lb/ft. That would be one awsome car. http://www.auto-amd.com/rs6.asp

To be honest, its not wise to go down the ferrari or lambo or pure exotic car because, if someone clips his bumper its about £8k for one on a lambo, unbelievable.
Hes never really going to swing a lambo or ferrari like you would do to a car like a skyline because its not worth it. Skyline must be the best car out there if you have about £10k to spend on which sounds like he does. With that he will be bale to keep up with most things and its kind to the pocket. If he must spend it all, a BMW 645 or wait for a new m5

I am no mechanic, but I have had 6 of the RAC's finest standing round the engine bay of my car (their best crews act as support crew on MSA events) and they all failed to diagnose a simple problem, so the car ended up being trailered to the specialist when I am sure they would of identified the problem on a simpler 'normal' car.
Also when buying a car like this it should always be inspected by a marque specialist and the general rule is do not buy at auction as it is a way of passing off cars that need engine rebuilds or other expensive work.
Ultimately I am just about evens with my car expense wise, the increase in value since I bought it in 1998 more or less cancels out the (not insignifcant) amount spent on it. (Most recent being a £7k gearbox rebuild
)But there are a load of great cars out there for between £50k and £100k so it is possible to buy something and have plenty of change for maintenance and maybe a less exotic (maybe more moderen) sports car as well.
Also, as I have already said, it has provided the opportunity to do some great things and meet some interesting people along the way that would just not have been the case if I had followed a more conventional route.

I'd buy 1000 Austin Metro's at £100 each spray all the lights black and put scaffold pipe on as an exhaust. Then put some spinning chrome hub-caps on all of them and drill some holes in the exhaust; and to finish them off put chrome turbo badges on and your finished!
Then you sell them to the newly licensed 17 year old chavs for £200, and they think they have a bargain. materials will be about £15 per car if you buy in bulk. Giving you a new balance of £185000
Then you go for the Ferrari 430 or a Aston Martin DB9 convertible, bearing in mind the Aston Martin will leave you with over £70k to buy a super bike and a few other bits
