An R32 followed me for 200 miles up the A1 recently and out of roundabouts and general acceleration my 03MY WRX PPP was quicker.
Accelerating from 30 to 100 the R32 was at least 200 Metres behind and even when he got the jump on me and briefly got past at lower speed, he didn't stay in front long!
He obviously enjoyed the drive and waved when I pulled in for petrol, not all VW drivers are bad losers then.

Up the hill from Amersham to Beaconsfield an R32 had to pull in behind my ugly old WRX wagon with PPP. I let him overtake a bit later, too risky for me, probably made him feel a bit better as well.

This has been a superb read from start to finish -- fantastic!
Some good points have been made with regard to the cars in question being reasonably well matched and 'challenges' are all dependent on opportunity, driver participation, skill, conditions... but I think the original poster (sorry VW) took his eye off the ball when he resorted to replies which were plain and simply 'immature'.
VW, if you enter an arena asking for information and choose to be insulting then you're not helping yourself. Personally I think your 'ugly' comments about the Bug-eye Impreza didn't win you any friends, and to be honest what right do you have to cause insult to people's pride and joy within an environment it's based on..? Okay, so you don't approve of the 2000-2002 styling... there's no need to keep going on about it just to drive home the fact you managed to win a mini road race.
To put things in some sort of perspective, I've had two run-ins with R32s -- one in the wife's MY01 WRX (bugs and eyes, eighteens, and WRSport back box, rest standard) and my sensibly modified MR2 Turbo which puts out about 250 bhp. As yet, nothing with my MY00 Classic Turbo but I only got it Saturday.
Both run-ins occurred on the same strip of dual carriageway with suitable conditions. In the WRX I was a bit surprised to be honest that I left the R32 behind so easily... but it starts just after a roundabout and perhaps the curve was scary for the Golf. It came back though but couldn't catch up and I couldn't really pull any more out... and as we slowed we exchanged a smile -- just as it should be.
In the MR2 I was just happy I didn't have to call upon the AA support vehicle afterwards, given the oil it's dripping at the moment and the coolant it's p!ssing out and overheating if I do too much M-way miles. This was the first time I'd seen an R32 in the flesh and the way it left the roundabout was jaw-dropping at the time. Nailed the fun pedal once the road was straight mind and effectively had to push the Golf along... and this was with my poorly '2 that was/is probably nowhere near decent power at the moment. Choosing to hog the outside lane with nothing else around, I had to flash to beg for some decency and encourage it to move over. When it finally caught me up at the end of the road, I was all set to exchange glances and some 'respect' but somebody else wasn't... tail between his legs and a sore loser no doubt.
Hope this helps VW. It's important to note that no confrontation is going to be clear-cut. Enjoy your car, respect others, and others will do the same in return.

Short memories people seem to have.
Top gear test - R32 was quicker than WRX
Not so long ago Evo had the Bug eye down for 0-100 as 18 secs!!!!!
Slooooooooooow
Amazing that 5 bhp can knock over 2 secs of this time

Oh and in my opinion the VW feels less stable than a scooby at speed
Hope this helps

Impreza, just by a little. Shouldn't be but is faster through the gears than a 3.2 V6 R32 and their 2.8 V6, only losing out on top end.
Another case of proformance value from a 2lt turbo. IMO

Result, not only do I have an exclusive car that has bank vault build quality and some of the best seats I've ever found in a car it's also as quick as most Imprezas. A result I reckon, I bought mine for comfort and a little bit of speed.
Expect to see a Black R32 for some traffic light GP action sussex scoobies, you'll find that if I lose I'll take it on the chin unlike some people I could mention.
I would never street race, I might try and see how fast my accelerates up to the legal maximum tho' and if someone happens to be doing the same then fair enough.

As for performce though... MMmmm I'd say the R32 was equal to a standard Wrx on launch and a bit quicker 40 onward.. but who owns a standard wrx??? not that many...
It won't be as quick as PPP wrx on launch nor after 40...
this is just based on having a tangle from some lights and up a dual carraige way with dude in a R32... from the lights the Sti just left it... period! upto 75ish before the roundabout next bit of dual in 3rd the Sti just pulled away form a roll on @ 40 mph... Sensible guy driving it too, not being stupid & gave us the thumbs up and a wave... a proper enthusiast, just a case of lets see what it would do... every body does a bit of that... its the muppets who take things either personaly or get into race mode... usualy these are the younger guys or guys without kids (in my observations).... you can spot them a mile away... you leave them in the twisties... and a few mins later they come flying past (once in a built up area and street lights are on if its dark) flat out in a 30 zone...
so predictable...! Rant over...!

Some good comments here as well as a bunch of stuff from some people who own a discontinued, slow variant Impreza that looks like an old model Corolla or at a push a Hyundai. If you do own one then I guess it's hard to live with a mistake like that, my heart bleeds for you.
I've already said I don't need to know about comparison with Imprezas that are actually quick ie P1, Type R, STi, RA or modded cars. I'll spell it out again for the illiterate or ignorant: I KNOW THESE ARE FASTER I'M INTERESTED IN COMPARISONS WITH STANDARD MODELS. Hopefully the big writing will help. No doubt those that can't read or have difficulties with their sight are the ones who bought the f'useless bugeye model. I'm aware that having a go at these 'people' won't exactly make me popular but the truth isn't always popular because it often hurts. Face facts bugeye owners your car is ugly and slow, end of.
Getting back to what matters it would seem that an R32 is as quick or quicker than a bugeye. I'm going to be looking for classic models in my area to see if anyone is up for a bit of a comparison.
I've got a lot of respect for Imprezas, well all except the "loser" model. Seems their drivers have a bit of a chip on their shoulders, I would too if my cheap feeling rally rep could be beaten by a bloated MKIV.

....so I say again:
"R32 would beat bugeye/blobeye WRX but not a classic.
.....in a straight line race".
Standard cars!!!!!!

Im afraid that the real world is quite differeent to La-la land.
If EVO magazine tested both cars to the same method and said one was quicker, why do you bother saying it must be wrong? Im sure they fixed it
You really have got to get a life, or learn to use a steering wheel and not just a game pad.
In fact you remind me of the person who asks the same question of 100 people until he gets the answer he want to hear. Then claims that was the only person they asked and it must be indicative (Dick!- especially apt in your case) of everybody.
I look forward to your new logon of 'NOVA1000BHP' and associated comments.

I've had some good answers here and as I thought the old MK1 Impreza is quicker than an R32. As I've seen the 18seconds to 100 model is a slower not to mention disgustingly ugly and cheap looking. What about the newset car, it looks a lot better than the obsolete thing they discontinued after a couple of years. It also seems to get better times even tho' it has only a couple more BHP.
I've decided I like it on this board despite a couple of 'people' (insert insult of choice instead of this word) being a bit upset I can tell most of you like quick cars. Just probably not the ones who bought that bugeyed abomination tho' PMSL.

My wife owns a bug-eye which I hated when Subaru first released it but the face has grown on me and with its 18in golduns, sports seats, Lexus lights, and sports exhaust it really is a great car. There's enough power there for most people and it was within her budget.
I don't like to jump on people but I really do think you've dished out more than your fair share of insults within this thread. If I wanted to I could claim that at least 'any' Subaru owner has themselves a vehicle which is more unique than a tin-pot Golf which every other tenth car seems to be. I could also blame 'credit' for allowing delinquent individuals to lay their hands on powerful barges which they can barely handle and maintain, let alone afford.
I object to your persistent putting down of bug-eye models and their owners and the way you simply seem to be on an ego-boosting trip, only admiring the posts that favour the R32. I told you in the early hours of the morning that I'd had a sensible run-in with an R32 in the wife's WRX and the Golf came 2nd. He was respectful, you're not. With your attitude you'd be better suited to a Nissan GTiR/Pulsar as most of those owners seem to be immature and inconsiderate within society.
I dunno... coming in here with your insults and throwing your toys out your pram. If you ever get invited to a housewarming party, do you immediately start to insult your hosts and tell them how ugly their property is..? Probably.
