The longest confirmed sniper kill of the Gulf War was reported to have been made by a Barrett Model 82A1 sniper rifle at a range of 1,800 meters—nearly 2,000 yards, or almost 10 times a deer hunter's maximum effective range. Numerous engagements with large, 50 caliber guns during the war took place at 1,600 meters (about 1,750 yards).

Someone commented that the shot that prompted the thread was easy using a 20x optic..... If they found themselves in this situation then they might realise how difficult it was even keeping their sight on the target let alone hitting it.
Its a macabre subject but you need a lot of skill/training/talent to shoot at these distances and in these circumstances.

4-8x should be more than adequate, but Americans like to go OTT!

I used to have a tasco ( spasco) 4-24x on my daystate, 24x was orrible at 50 yds - the disc on the knockdown nearley filled the view, I cant imagine anyone hitting anything at that kind of range with less magnification though.

.50 match ammo is available... if you hand load it.
Anyway, .50 is on its way out for anti-personel use. The .338 Lapua Mag is now the fav., UK Army are currently switching to it in the form of a militarised Accuracy International rifle.
Many civilian rifles available are much more accurate than the military versions, custom built civilian rifles even more so. Only problem is they wouldn't last five minutes on the battlefield.
As for the Marine involved, yes, very good shot. I could probably do the same on a range under good conditions. But what you forget is that this guy was probably tired, scared, been in combat for weeks or months. Probably using a gun that had been dropped a few times, loads of dust in it, using bogo rounds and not having perfect conditions nor perfect wind indication etc. etc. So good on him.

I think you'll find that the longest confirmed kill is by Carlos Hathcock during Vietnam which killed a Viet Cong Officer who at the time was a moving target on his bike. I cant remember the exact range but ill dig it up later its in the range of two miles. A monkey can hit someone at a 'k' , believe me.

I cant see that compensator making much difference; it must be like being kicked by a horse.

Isn't it mainly to reduce muzzle flash?
edited to add: I suppose looking at the design it would give a good blast against the recoil.
I have fired a semi auto shotgun with cutts compensator (more against muzzle flip) and it was surprisingly effective!

If thats a .308 off iron sights Id be impressed. Im a keen rifle shot but I prefer small-bore for the reason mentioned above...
AJM; 31% of a ****-load of recoil is too much for me; I wouldnt fire a .50 unless it was on a pintle mount.
"is that John Leslie?" Yes; and Ulrika's 'Second Chance' wont do her much good against that!

That story said he was using a 7.62mm round which I find suprising. Nato's standard sniper round is 7.62 x 51mm but I didn't think the yanks cared for that.
It'd be far more funny if he'd used a Smith & Wesson magnum :-
Weight: 2.6 lbs (1.2 kg) empty with 4 inch barrel.
Caliber: .44 Magnum (Can fire .44 Special as well)
Barrel Length: 4 inch (10.2 cm) [629 only], 6 inch (15.2), 8 3/8 (21/3 cm)
Action: Double Action.
Range: 150 ft (45.7 m).
Cylinder: 6 rounds .
Cost: $600.
Made in: America.
Special: "do ya feel lucky punk"

A .308 Winchester round is effective and accurate at over one mile.
7.62 Russian is a 7.62x39mm round and its a completely different proposition.
