First impressions of Evo 6

I test drove a gsr VI yesterday also.
My best mate recently bought one to cure a hankering he's had for a few years.
I must say that my test drive wasnt as stunning as yours.
it was a genuinely quick car, couldnt be anything else with 1.4bar, but the neck snapping acceleration that oft gets mentioned with this marque wasnt as I expected.
Will do a back to back test on our favourite private road very soon with my humble UK classic, two runs each in both cars should give a reasonable indication.
tbh, with all the threads from scooby drivers moving over to evo etc and the MLR smugness I really thought I would be humiliated.....

It's not like you could be accused of "buying the wrong car" whichever way you went; they're both great cars.
All this talk about one being "vastly" better than other has been done to death is BS and is more a reflection on the owners than on the cars IMHO!

There Both great cars, each with there strong points and bad points. Ive allways been torn between the two on which one to get.
I went for the scooby cause of the fact their a harder more demanding car to drive, and there's less electronics involved with the car to help it go round a corner. But the down side with that is your more likley to loose it than an evo.

They are both great cars - I went for an Evo 6 because it is the 'dark' side and something I'd never had. I've had 3 impreza's (94 wrx, 99 rb5 wr sport, 97 sti v3 type-r) and can honestly say that they are all brilliant cars.
The unfortunate thing, for me, with the impreza at the moment is that tossers can pick them up cheap and give the whole community a bad name which just isn't on because you guys are diamonds.
The Evo is harder to live with as an every day car, I think, it's odd because its far more refined with its interior and so on but it is just 'different'.
Ultimately, they are both monsters and are fast as f|_|ck, which is nice. I am happy in evo land at the mo!

i can recommend the ap 6 pots, got the 362 mm kit on mine, had the xt330 pack fitted when i bought it, got used to that so got autronics now running 1.67 bar boost with anti lag as well, glad you got one

Evo 6 is a excellent car
the tommi is abit better the quick rack makes the car so pointy and precise it really gives a driver confidence when pushing
suspension is nice ,firm yes but only how you would want it
the 225 wide tyres/ do make the car tramline more than a evo4 which is in some ways a superior drive
4's feel more refined or 6's feel more aggressive take your pick
evo's always feel more like a group 4 escort in the bends sitting down at the rear where as scoobies wash out at the front
I like both subaru's and evo's they are both awsum cars and the power they are extracting from evo's is awsum
still have my girlfriends white Tommi makinen for sale its mint any inspection welcom
sad to have to let it go but need the cash flow

I moved over to the dark side just before crimbo (2000 GSR Evo 6), I loved my STi v5 but after owning her 2 years I wanted a change and the fact more and more scoob's where poping up around here I wanted to be different again...
Not spotted another evo on the road since owning it, the scoob got alot of attention but its unreal in the evo, people taking photo's etc.
Suspension, steering and braking feel loads better than my STi did (STi did have Coilovers and a brembo kit), the evo comes on boost faster but the sti had more of an kick,
I still wave at scoobies forgetting I'm in the evo, some wave, some give me the bird...

DO NOT MISS THE AYC OIL CHANGE AT 4500
you will have to replace the rear dif if you miss this too often
(got a spare one in the garage if you want, only squeaks a bit, wonder if I can fit it to the STi , I miss my AYC)
As to the gas mileage, I could just reach my sisters house in 220 miles in the EVO V, went at christmas in the STi (53 plate type uk), and, could only just reach it again and the STi's tank is 20 litres bigger !!!

Of course there are differences ..
When I sold my 03 STI i thought it was time to look at an evo until the "apparently" all singing and dancing 2006 STI is released.
The evo 6 is considerably different to the latest incarnations, mine is an Evo 8 FQ330 and has just been decatted so pushing around 350bhp up from about 336.
If you are considering a move from the scoob then a few points I have to offer by comparison are:
01: The scoob is more "cockpit" like in its interior where the evo feels functional.
02: The steering feel of the evo is considerably sharper than that of the scoob but this is very dependant on the stiffness of the tyre sidewall. It can make a world of difference with tyre choice.
03: Accelleration and power band delivery in the scoob was peaky and limited within the rev range.
04: Evo accelleration is quite ferocious to say the least, I was not really prepared for just how brutal it can be, honestly!
05: Bad "B" roads can be a nightmare in the evo as the suspension is rock hard. The scoob definately felt more planted on some of the roughest roads I've been on.
06: Servicing is 4500-5000 mile intervals - although scoobies require oil checks/servicing every 5000 miles, its not as publicised.
07: Evo servicing can be done with a specialist as long as they use mitsi parts, the warranty is unaffected.
08: Wet weather and ACD set in "gravel" mode means leech like road holding on the front end and progressive power slides which don't catch you out.
09: Lift off oversteer is the key to upsetting the back end
10: Speedo in the Evo8 is pretty pointless really and is obviously an afterthought. 0-180mph in less that half a sweep of the tiny dial.
11: Coming home on the first day of ownership on an incredibly straight road I accelerated like I did in the scoob. Except this time the clock was nudging 160mph before I realised - quite ******* scary really.
As with any rice rocket they are just a moddable as the scoob with slightly stronger internals really. I have got used to the ride comfort and manic performance so just pushing the boundaries a little further each day - roads permitting
Must admit though that I do miss the sound of the scoob and bonnet view. I don't get as many waves as I used to with scooby drivers although I do actually flash and wave each time
All in all I am very satisfied with the Evo 8 and would be hard pressed to go back to the scoob. Saying that I will be test driving the new 06 STI and spec "C" when the time comes as the spec "c" is the closest to mine in terms of out and out pace and handling.
Just my ten penneth ... as he dons the flamesuit in anticipation.
