MP3 - iPod or Sony HDD Walkman?

You'll fill 20Gig in no time, I put almost 40Gig into my iPod in a few days, well maybe a week.
In truth the exact model doesn't really matter, I bought the iPod because I have been using iTunes as my player on the PC since it became available and like it so the iPod was the simple option. It works for me and I didn't have to think about it, just plugged it in and moved my play lists over. I must say I have been impressed at how neutral the sound is, I guess the "hi-fi" mags might describe it as "flat" or "uninvolving" but it lacks harmonics and has a pretty flat frequency response.
What is interesting is how our attitude to media, especially music, is changing. I think that it is great that many more people are getting to hear music that they may not have heard if the only option was to acquire it on CD. On the other hand there are lots of problems with this for artists and record companies. At the root of this problem, I believe, is the fact that many of the big companies are run by managers and accountants who couldn't and didn't see this coming. If we could get them out of the way then perhaps we could solve the rights problems and get down to artists, music and listeners.
It must be said that it is my honest belief that Apple got lucky with iTunes and the iPod, I don't believe it represents anything close to great management or design on their part.

Agreed. I think the root of the problem is that, in the past, the mass production of physical discs was a necessary step in the distribution of music from studio to listener. So, although people have been taping stuff off friends for as long as anyone can remember, the only way people could get hold of music their friends didn't have was to buy it.
Now we have an extremely efficient method for distributing media of all kinds worldwide, quickly and at very low cost - so the mass production of CDs is, in technical terms, no longer necessary. The media giants' contribution has never really been the creation of quality music - talented artists do that - it's been marketing and promotion, and the manufacture of discs. Some very big companies are facing being made obsolete almost overnight, and they're quite rightly terrified.

I haven't read any of this thread. Evo v. Scooby, "My dad can beat up your dad" etc. etc. Entertaining but ultimately useless. Go out and play with both of the devices in somewhere like Dixons.
Download iTunes and see how you get on with it. Read up on all the ways you can manage music, like Smart Playlists, autosync, manually manage songs. Try browsing the Music Store. Then do the same with the equivalent rival products.
Buy your device. Ignore comparison threads on internet bulletin boards where users of each product have a urinating contest about the very subjective qualities which they appreciate about their chosen device. Enjoy your music.
iPod is popular. I love mine. You might not care. Good

in 10 years time no-one will remember the sony apart from the few that bought them.
the ipod defines this decade and on top of that has the most user friendly design of all mp3 players. Simply hold one in your hand and it just makes sense to buy one.
