Very interesting thread.
Just got a notice through the post this morning and its a notice of intended prosecution from the Cumbria Constabulary.
Apparently I have been cought on camera driving at 35mph in a 30mph speed limit. Ok, fairs fair and I have been speeding, but here is what really gets my goat.
Since I received my first 2 sp30's last year after being cought by mobile vans I decided to junk my Geodesy and not use any camera detection equiment at all.
Here's why. I now do everything I can to drive within the speed limits when they are 30, 40 or 50 zones, but after driving around the lakes for 4 days genuinely attempting to keep within the speed limits I have mucked up once and received more pionts and a fine.
I agree that speeding is not big or clever and that people should be punished for it, but people are not robots and will NEVER keep their vehicle to a precise speed ALL of the time.
Something needs to be done about this. A fairer system needs to be implemented as a lot of licences are about to be revoked.

To my mind, though, the question is not whether an accurately controlled speed CAN be maintained, but whether or not it actually SHOULD. Nothing 'magic' happens at 30.01mph that marks a sudden transition from 'safe' to 'unsafe' - but speed is easy to quantify, compare against a threshold, and use as evidence. In fact it's the only aspect of someone's driving that can be measured objectively, so no wonder it's so popular as a propaganda tool.

Everyone complains that its 'just too easy to travel between 30 and 35MPH' .... well, I've got news for you - its JUST as easy to do between 25 and 30MPH.
How do I know this? Well my place of employment has just introduced a site-wide 20MPH limit (STRICTLY enforced, sanction is loss of job! ) and whats happened? most people travel at 20MPH - the result of this is weird, when I enter the public roads and am expected to travel at 30MPH it seems really FAST! and sticking to 30 is simplicity itself - try it.
I have been on the end of a speeding ticket (only 1 in many, many years) and I do speed now and again - my wife got a ticket for 36MPH and if anyone sticks to the speed limit MOST THE TIME then its her! Indeed, I wrote to the Chief Constable and told him what I though of his officers catching the 'school run' instead of the yobs on a Friday night screaming around!
His answer was an eye opener and clearly from someone who had had to mop up the remains of children from the road - I accused him and his officers of hitting a 'soft-target' (the school run mums and dads) .... he replied and said that the only 'soft target' he could see at that time of day was a childs body!
He won me over that day .....................

Cheers Pete!
Thought you may be along with another view.
Considering that most of my travelling is done on 30 and 40 limits, too and from work and for work purposes, I think I am doing pretty well. The routes I normally take are littered with speed traps.
As you dont know me and have only my word that I am genuine about the effort I put into my own speed control, I believe you should do just that.
