You keep coming up with comparisons that suit your argument like a clever politician or statistician o question time, literal eloquence is the fancy term i believe as you continue to espouse the rights of smokers, lets face it smokers have had the upper hand for a long time. many posts support this selective exclusion of smoking in public places. Segregation lets be honest does not work all that well.
Where my choices impinge on another I take responsibility for them and smokers and their supporters are now waking up to the fact that this now applies to them. I think the best place to air your concerns are with your MP as these things have to go through parliament you know and take all your comments from here, use that option open to you, just like I look forward to having the option to go out have a drink, a meal and a damn good night out and not go home stinking to high heaven of cigarettes because a minority feel I should not have that choice.

The funniest bit of ollys rants is the fact that a ban is coming and there is nothing he can do about it but clutch at straws, and selfishly think that the smokers have the right to force their disgusting habit on everyone. Regardless of whether they like it or not. what happened to freedom of choice there?

Oooh, you've got me there. Ok, "most people.", particulary when they are trying to eat whilst in the immediate vicinity of some moron chugging away like a poison gas factory.
Smoking is an expensive, unneccessary habit that brings about the premature death of thousands of people every year. Every packet has a warning on the side which basically says, "smoke these and you will die an early death.".
Conclusion - smokers = cretins.
I care about things like this:

...and bollocks to peoples "rights" being eroded. That old chestnut seems to be used by all and sundry these days to behave like an obnoxious ****. One day I might be able to go to the pub when I visit the UK and not have to chuck my clothes in the wash straight away when I get home as they stink like an ash try. I might be able to breathe normally at the pub as well. A good idea all round. Well done to Wetherspoons.

Er, what???
i think we've all seen one too many top gears, as everyone on scoobynet seems obsessed with analogy's!
so i have a couple....
like smoking, i think putting money in the fruit machines is completely stupid, even tells you the % pay out on the machine (bit like the 'you will die' on ****..) but i don't mind people playing on them, because its THEIR money, now if they was using everyone in the pubs money, i'd then have a problem! same as kill yourself with smoke, just don't make me inhale it.
olly, would you be happy for people to gamble with your money??
& dont come out with the 'well dont go to pubs' b0llox. why should i sit in on a Fri/Sat night so some d1ck with a death wish can slowly kill him/her self down the local???
& even IF passive smoking has no ill effect (which is blatently b0llox also) its still repulsive to non smokers, as some have said, makes your eyes water/sting, smells, can make breathing uncomftable.
As for your guy farting on the bus example, what if everyone on the bus was farting, you'd have to get off the bus and walk or put up with it, that would seem unfair woudnt it??
near enough all of my friends who smoke started through smoking socially, this ban would help others from starting and also help those that do cut down, i'd also say 80% of the people who i know that smoke would like to give up...
last point, having seperate areas for smoking (unless completely seperated physicaly) doesn't work, smoke cant read non smoking signs! and it would seem alot of smokers cant either
Wez
(a DJ who HAS to put up with smoke 10+ hours a week, DJing being my only source of income!)
:note, i havent been insulting to anyone.

Ollyk will say that it is more important that the smokers are allowed to continue to poison themselves and everyone around them so they can have the freedom of choice, while non smokers are not afforded that choice
the simple fact is that he is a selfish ****

A smoking ban in UK pubs good idea, and I hope it goes ahead. It won't stop smokers going out for drinks; they will just go outside when they want a cig. But by the end of the night, they'll find that they have smoked a lot less than they would have done otherwise. So, as far as I can see, it benefits EVERYONE.
A bonus is that all those pretty ladies that don't currently go to pubs 'cos they don't like the smoke will start coming out in droves. Bring it on!!

Smoking Ban
I live in Ireland where the ban is in a couple of months and it's GREAT. I enjoy a couple of pints at the weekend along with a ***, I only smoke when I drink but I didn't mind going out at all, and gave them up at the turn of the new year. I was in the U.K a few times over the past few months and it's horrible in a pub now that's filled with smoke, you really smell it on cloths etc. the next morning and I smoked a lot more
It take a while to get used to but even chain smokers will see the benifits.
Cheers
John

I smoke
Its a filthy disgusting thing to do
I don't allow it in the food area of my place.
I do allow it in the bars because if I diddn't I would end up bankrupt inside six months.
The sooner a ban comes the better
It will also be good to watch the government struggle as they have no way to fill the big black hole in their accounts if smoking is banned. It might stop them from running around wasteing our money killing people in the middle east.

Just for you, I'll edit it, and to show there's no hard feelings, here's some new software, to go with your new user name:

Not all smokers are obnoxious filth-spewing a$$holes there to make the lives of non-smokers a misery. We're dealing with a drug addiction that's worse than that of Cocaine and many of us are desperate to quit.

Trouble is, this would leave them with a sizeable budget deficit before the benefits of lower NHS spending started to kick in many years later, and even then they'd still have a deficit. Then, there's the influence of the tobacco companies....
The smoking ban in public places has only come about due to pressure from anti-"passive smoking" groups. Their case is based on some pretty dodgy science, but their aims are noble, so good luck to 'em.

Weatherspoons are pre-empting the ban that the government is likely to enforce in the coming months or years and I hope its a gamble that they end up regretting.
So if we all felt as strongly as Big Man, Non Smokers would be marching round London protesting about nasty smoke, the government would react rashly and enforce a ban etc. But NO like fox hunting they take a subject that everyone has an opinion about but that only the incey wincey minority really care about and propose a ban, hoping that all those with the opinion of the quiet majority will give them a few extra votes in May... This government smells of bell whiff.
Anyhoo so they want to ban smoking in bars in Liverpool - the council voted unanimously to do this - and NOW they want to allow prostitution in certain public areas... So class A drug abuse, pimping and AIDS are OK but smoking in a pub isnt?
Its comical - I will continue to smoke in pubs - starting tomorrow night - anyone fancy a smell of me or a whiff of my second hand smoke (at no charge) pm for details of my local
