Never been called a snob before, let alone one that is upside down!

It seems whatever people drive nowadays, whether its a 4x4, motorbike, high performance saloon/coupe etc there is always going to be someone out there who doesn't want you to drive it for whatever reason. Does it all really matter?

The 4x4 is heavier than a lot of even very large estate cars. This makes it a lot more stable when towing than with a car, and as such, safer.
So a high centre of gravity is safer for towing

Weight has nothing to do with centre of gravity.

Good 4x4 vehicles all have very low centres of gravity, otherwise they wouldn't be much good off road would they?

Iain, you've only stated why he chose a 4x4 over an estate car. I asked why he didn't choose and MPV which has all the benefits you mention that a 4x4 has (apart from the off road ability).

So far the ONLY reason he has is for the 4X4 ability (which is fair enough)

around me, ive been off-road much more than them - partly they force me off partly i get bored when they panic at the slightest patch of mud or water so will 'do the off-roading' for them

Not sure what the last thing was, but during the last year:

5 berth caravan.
Canoe trailer for 12 canoes plus paddles etc.
3 tier dinghy trailer.
plus another trailer.

Car, as username.

Did try a couple of mpvs, but they were expensive for what they were, (both to run and buy), underpowered, and the 4x4 had better stopping distances than the few mpvs he tried (that one surprised even me !!!!).

I drove a newish Chrylser Voyager the other day and was shocked at just how bad it's braking and general handling was....

Good answer! Well I've not got as much experience as that but we also used to tow a 5 berth caravan with the last couple of cars we had and they felt nowhere near as comfortable towing as the discovery that does it at the moment.....Oh and my dad works for derbyshire countryside service so it does get used off road before anybody chirps up!!

Back off to muppets methinks

But not as low as a road car.

If the tail starts to wag the dog, I know which one is more likely to end up on it's roof.

But the tail is much less likely to wag the dog because the dog is so much heavier than the tail. That's the whole point. No point of having a low centre of gravity if the trailer / caravan is going to pull you all over the place because the car is light...

I've been towing caravans (family holidays) for 10 years or more, using a variety of medium to big saloon and estate cars, and the 4x4 is easily the most stable of all of them.

And in any case, you'll only ever get the situation of ending up on your roof if you don't know how to control a snake, and / or are driving too fast for the conditions...

Agreed on that one. Which is another one of the reasons my dad chose the trooper. I've driven one of these on a 4x4 off-road course through deep water, mud, steep gradients etc, and it's a very capable vehicle.

Like for like vehicle weight, which is more stable?

Couldn't agree more, but a majority of the public are not that sensible.
Generally those with 4x4 off-roaders/SUV's, take on an air of invunerability when towing (flame suit on )

Be wary of the motives of these tree-hugging, lentil-muching "environmentalist" lesbians. They hate ALL cars, and If the succeed in getting 4x4s banned from London, sports cars will be next on their list.

Only 22"!!! You dissapoint, expect 24's no-less completely slammed with hydraulics so you flick da' switches at the traffic lights and scooby cruises. A 2gigawatt sound system so you can practice bouncing the car intime with the beat.

Jealousy aside (who wouldn't want one of them BMW panzerwagons?) these SUVs are just so darned BIG. I commute through London on a bike and any biker will tell you, get a couple of even medium sized ones together and you are stuck. Heck I've seen more bloody HUMVEEs in town recently than scoobs!

SUVs are invariably driven by dozy tarts wielding a mobile phone. The vehicles sheer size is intimidating, let alone the thoughtless way that percieved invincibility allows them to drive. Its bad enough to risk being run into in dense traffic, let alone run over.

I mean, a bloody HUMVEE! For popping into town? Jesus, what next?

Screwd.

From some of the comments, if I were to use this run a child to school it would be unreasonable, but fine if you guys use your Imprezas!
Is a forester classed as a 'chelsea tractor' though?
My dad thinks so but that could just be because I want one....

Why on earth would anyone(outside the armed forces) want let alone need a humvee?
Maybe in the states with the celebrity elite with nice wide straight roads where you can fill the tank for a tenner, but over here !!! it defies belief...

(The Federal Highway comission has ruled the Canyonero unsafe for highway or city driving.)

Canyonero!

Top of the line in utility sports, Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts!

Canyonero!

She blinds everybody with her super high beams, She's a squirrel crushing, deer smacking, driving machine!

Canyonero!-oh woah, Canyonero! (Yah!)

Poor Chav; BAD Rav 4 1.6 LOL

Ridiculous red herring this - no UK 4X4 is an issue - those that can run gas guzzlers are such a minority - lets worry more about 40 tonne artic' drivers nodding off, yes?

I had a badass Range Rover 4.6 until recently - fab car for a family with a huge great dog/baby/luggage/mountain-bike/family/friends/life and I dont think I could ever afford to go over 70 in it due to wallet issues with under 18mpg issues. Slow = complete safety yes???

D (about to jump in his 4x4, 20mpg, 1600kg 450bhp 190,mph vehicle that would anhilliate any Fuji heavy industries vehicle or Hummer or X5 but is technically a soft safety cushion as it is made by a company who does NOT make SUV's - LOL MFAO - you knows it!
