Anyway it wont be long before we are ALL forced to pay into a pension scheme irrespective of our circumstances..
As pensions do not currently pay any sort of return....
Not sure quite what you mean by "currently", but during the 2004 calender year the *average* Balanced Managed pension fund grew by 9.8%, and for 2003 the equivalent figure was 17.5%.
Bear in mind that these figures are tax free. To have achieved these returns elsewhere (in a taxed environment) a 40% taxpayer would have needed growth of 16% and 30% (gross) respectively.
Having said that, I know many people that are not paying into any pension scheme apart from state, basically because of the pension returns of people they know..

The State will look after me
Too young - don't need to worry about retirement yet
Too complex/expensive
Can't/won't afford it
My house(s)/business is my pension fund
Oh, and finally, (to save anyone else having to type it

Tentenths - which pension scheme do you recommend then?
You have preconceived my parameters based on an internet window. I have not told you what my overall strategy is, only given you an inkling of it. Property features also and rental thereoff as well as other items.
Tell us about yourself and why you are certain that you will be ok.The only pension fund that can perform is a final salary based one - otherwise you might as well have an endowment and we know all the promises that were made for them and how they performed. I am just so glad i didnt take one despite all the advisors telling me otherwise.
If pensions are so good why have i lost so much money in them? Please understand, that i am sure that they are good ones, but i just cant afford to take that risk anymore.
Please refer to this thread which is asking why a pension fund is worth less than hoskibs payments so far and tell me why it hasnt grown by an average 9.8%?
Advisors in my opinion are just car salesmen and they would sell their granny to get a deal![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Oh! and lastly how much tax you paying mate? (tee hee)

maybe the typist of my statement misheard 9.8% growth as 9.8% loss

some people are coming across as really quite stupid here. A "pension" is not a single thing. Its like saying "cars" are rubbish because you dont like Nissan Micras or you dont like "house" because the last one you had was in a rough area. I appreciate Joe Bloggs cant grasp the nitty gritty but the concept is something a 5yr old could handle.
You want to know which ones are good.....dont ask me because a) i dont give free advice and b) you dont belive advisers anyway!
and whats that all about???? advisers are in the business of giving you advice, hopefully ending in you buying something (whether thats an actual product or simply their time)........how is that different to any other service industry? My local gym told me i should join and i could get fit...are they evil crooks for wanting to sell me their service?

Beastie - Do you have income in the UK? Seems to me that you might be living on a mix of tax avoidance and tax evasion, but it is possible that you have no income or domicile in the UK, so you are due to pay your taxes in a different country.
What country do you pay your taxes in?
