The government doesn't believe in promoting excellence - this might result in some people becoming dissolusioned (sp) because they can not achieve it. Far easier to set lower standards that everyone can reach - my wife works in education - this is most certainly the way that this is going and probably other areas as well.

Good point well made that man!! I think you have hit the nail on the head. Strive for mediocratiy, remove the benefits of excellence and keeps the unwashed masses happy. Let the lowest common denominator drag us all down rather than letting us try and pull them up.

It's true as I speak to quite a few young drivers today who have no real idea about lane discipline or even speed limits on certain types of road. Now I know most of it is in the Highway Code, but let's be honest most of us don't look at one of those after we've passed our test do we?

If I wasn't interested in cars I would probably take less notice of driving standards etc. so it's no surprise the average person doesn't adhere to the rules all the time is it? I know I'm far from perfect, but at least I know the basics. What worried me about this morning's epsiode was how I as someone who counts himself as a reasonably competent driver can end up in a situation like that.

I can't help, but feel that if there was a combined effort to continually educate drivers it would have a beneficial effect, but I still say there is a certain mentality among some people that no amount of education is going to be able to change. For instance no amount of education IMO would ever stop Mr. SUV/4x4 this morning from swerving towards me the way he did. He got back in front and that was all he cared about at the time and that mentality is ingrained in him for ever more I fear.

We are back to accepting the lowest common denominator again though!! If 90% of people zip merged, you wouldn't have had to deal with dick head!

Exactly, if people would just merge in turn then there wouldn't be a queue in the left lane and an empty right lane with 'to$$ers' roaring up the outside. The queue in the left lane would be half as long, and people would get through the restriction quicker as there wouldn't be a continual stream of 'queue jumpers' trying to 'cut in' on the queue.

But that's far too hard for a lot of people to work out.

BTW, if someone tries to block you getting in, i've found they'll often back down rather than risk damaging their car. In that situation I tend to indicate then start moving across, not forgetting to give them a cheery wave to thank them for letting me in.

Not that they had any choice.
