The Model - Kraftwerk
About the earliest track I remember seeing on the TV and thinking - wow - that's something special.
It set my musical compass for life.
Would also vote for any early depeche mode - a band I've always liked, from when I was a kid under 10, through student days into gothdom, and beyond

I'm dumb today, I meant Dreaming of Me, but wrote New Life - Doh! Dreaming of Me was the first single reaching Number 57 in the charts if I remember correctly which I probably don't

I can relate to most of the suggestions made, Depeche Mode, Visage, Joy Division, The Cult, Kraftwerk, Adam & the Ants, Soft Cell etc
A couple more:-
Kids in America - Kim Wilde
Kirst McCall - New England
But the one song which defined the early '80s for me was Ghost Town by The Specials. As a kid whose father was unemployed due to the Thatcher recession of the early '80s it was a dark song which summed up the general mood.

My iPod is a relic and shrine to the eighties.......about 25 gig of the almost full 40gig drive is eighties.....
Anything from that era stokes up memories and in most cases I can pinpoint where I was and what I was doing whilst listening to a particular song all those years ago....
Life by music..... sweet
Paul

Agree with lots on here, Vienna by Ultravox (never made No1) Visage, Japan Two Tone, Bad Manners great times. Even Phil Collins managed a decent disc with In the Air.
Mind you 1980 saw the murder of John Lennon, and in 81 Bob Marley went, remember both vividly. **** i'm old!!
