Must be a right laugh when flat out in a new WRX and a CTR flashes you to get out of the way

Its also very telling of a drivers ability when straight line speed is all that matters, however

Good points, well made!

Yep its clear there are 2 distinct camps....and we're obviously pro-VTEC

Type-R's rock in my opinion and a CTR is never slow in my book!

Also a car isn't always about how fast it goes, its how it makes you feel.....personally I love revvin the nuts of the Teg when I'm in the mood cos I just love the harsh loud sound of the engine, if I had a German autobahn whisper quiet super saloon I may as well be at home in my armchair.

Honda is one of the world's best motor engine manufacturers, they have won countless engine design awards. Some people clearly don't have a clue what they are talking about.

Now can we put this to bed once and for all..?

i considered getting rid of my pulsar a while back and had a real good look at the CTR ,as i came into a bit of money.my mate owns a nice red one which ive had a bit of a thrash in and ive also had a test drive in one and compared to a 14 year old car that costs a fraction of the price ,i really wasnt impressed at all.i really think honda could have done a better job.i did find the car a tad too slow for my liking!i think theyve also become a bit of a clitoris car.

I was thinking of chopping my CTR in for a pulsar, but then realised the £1000`s id save would be blown on new gearboxes and clutches You say Honda could have done a better job, the only thing they got wrong was the steering, other than that its hard to fault the car IMHO......

(Awaits reply about how cheap and economical to run your pulsar is )

yawn..............can't believe we're still going on this.....

I thought the thread had come to a pretty good conclusion that the Type-R brand in Hionda has 2 distinct camps :-
  • people who love it and say its up their with its contemporaries in terms of pace
  • people who loathe it and say its slow.
Choose your camp, as there appears to be no-one in the middle ground of no-mans land.

Better damping at the front end and better brakes imo.

And if Honda had been a bit more generous they could have thrown in some JDM Recaro's and an LSD

I'm being awkward and also fall in the middle. I liked the CTR but decided to by a scooby. Nothing wrong with the CTR i just dont fancy screaming the car at high revs to really get it to shift. My brother has just bought the CTR and loves them. They are a good price for what you get and you will love or hate them depending on how you want to drive.

Yeah, probably will. Seemed like a funny idea at the time. Not to worry, because it's going back to the leasing company if it doesn't sell. So it makes no odds if I sell it or not really. Just giving someone the chance to own a cheap, well looked after CTR, that's all.

Thats a question the 05 WRX owner could never answer, as no 05 WRX (unless modded) is capable of travelling at that speed )

The Seat Leon Cupra R rarely gets a look in, I suppose it still suffers from badge problems. They really are quite well built these days, I tested Civic and Seat, Civic was mentalist I liked it, but I'd rather have an ITR or something more practical for road driving. If you want more instant power, doesn't get much more instant than 225bhp from the 1.8T in Seat (same as Audi TT engine), no turbo lag, very pokey indeed and a pretty good chassis. Nice cabin, driving position, plenty of toys. Arguably, the Civic has a more refined chassis than the Leon, but really does depend on it's uses. You get a lot of car for your money from a Leon, four doors, and lots of space. The only issue I think you'll have is depreciation cause of above mentioned badge. I personally think the 182 with cup sus sounds like the best hot hatch around at the moment if you just want something to thrash, if you can put up with shoddy workmanship, crap driving position and jokes about being a hair dresser - they much cheaper than all the others in the market!

I think at the the end of the day its "horses for courses", some people are never going to like the type-r brand and that's good becos we live in a democracy and people are right to say if they think somethings ****.

Equally I am going to defend the type-r brand becos I think what it stands for in the purist n/a engine sense is kind of great & unique, thats what I like about it. I apologise to anyone if I was perhaps in hindsight rather personal in my remarks (ack. Mad Gypsy).

The trouble with posting is when you're typing it, it seems ok and then when you re-read it back a few days later u think.......**** that was a tad harsh.............)

If you believe that the best drivers' cars are not necessarily the quickest, but those that blend dynamics and performance so seamlessly and cohesively that the driving experience is a powerful singularity rather than a collection of dazzling party tricks, the Integra Type R hits the sweet spot with uncanny accuracy. The logic behind my ownership of one.

The trouble is party tricks do you make laugh at times, hence an Impreza sits on the drive now - oh and the need for more room for a growing family.

the CTR is a good honest RELIABLE sportscar, they are quick for what they are, in fact very quick. we on the other hand who own imprezas, pulsars and so on take our chances all the time when we thrash our cars, next time away from the lights could blow the box. but on the other hand the CTR is reliable. its whatever floats your boat really. personally i'll be taking my chances with my 2.0 turbo AWD . but put it like this - a 2.0 fto mivec has the same power as the CTR. we never discuss these!! both dont have a turbo but manage over 200bhp.

whatever floats your boat - it just comes down to personal taste.

Absolutely spot on mate!

I have a CTR, previously had an PPP'd RB5.
Hi Dai-tec and Emms its Matt_D here

I simply love my CTR!, the gearstick position, the ever so smooth gearbox, the pinpoint handling its fantastic.
Yeah you got to rev it a bit to get it going but thats what a Type-R is all about, the R is for Racing!

And all this torque (he he) of the CTR's lack of torque is rubbish!
Compared to a turbo'd car yes it is a lower figure but compared to any other 2 litre N/A engine its almost exactly the same figure but at a slightly higher RPM.

See

CTR
Torque........................145lb ft
rpm..........................@5900rpm
Focus ST170
Torque........................144lb ft
rpm..........................@5500rpm
Audi A4 2.0 FSI
Torque........................148lb ft
rpm..........................@3250rpm
306 GTI-6
Torque........................142lb ft
rpm..........................@5500rpm
Clio 182
Torque........................148lb ft
rpm..........................@5250rpm

I had a Honda Prelude Type S a few years ago. Took a little while to master the craft of keeping the engine on the boil, choosing the right gear for precisely the right moment, watching the rev counter (infact watching the rev counter so much I hardly looked at the speedo) listening to the engine etc etc.All those things that a vtec owner knows so well, that leaves you feeling as one with the car.
When the time came to sell I took out a Scoob for a test drive. I drove it very fast. End of. All those things I'd learned it seemed, weren't required anymore. The Scoob just bored me. It was very good and I can see people on the forum get a lot of fun out of them. It just wasn't the driving experience I wanted.

Smile Best of both worlds

As the owner of both a CTR (new in Sept 04) and a MY03 STi PPP, I can honestly say that I love them both.

I use the CTR for my daily 100+ mile round trip commute (13k miles since Sept) and for ferrying the kids around. And the Scoob (18k miles since May 03) for weekends.

Two totally different cars for two totally different purposes, and each well suited.

I'd love to use the STi daily but the fuel cost would be pretty crippling. The CTR comes with a 3 year 90k warranty which will get me through the few years of long distance commuting.

Why people get so stressed when comparing these cars (CTR & Scooby) I can't understand. They aren't intended to be direct competitors after all.

If we all liked the same things the world would be a very boring place!

Here here, finaly someone who talks sence.....We are in the same boat as you. I really enjoy driving both my STI and the other halfs CTR. Performance there is nothing in it (his is tweeked), yet depending on the mood and driving conditions you may enjoy one over the other. I am more happy driving the STI in these winter conditions, on a track I prefer the CTR as it is more 'chuckable'.

Comparing cars is allways a toughie, you boys have been arguing points back and forward about which is best or whatever. The simple fact is no one can tell another that thier choice or opinion is wrong as we each want something different from our cars, why we have a choice. I just think we are kindah spoiled for choice that whatever you are after you can pretty mutch find what you want.

Or you can take a tip out of my book , the reason I got the Scooby was the STI badge matched the pink on my lippy

I test drove one before i bought the scooby.

It was between that a Clio Cup and Impreza. The Civic was fast and the handling spot on, i took it round the back roads on the out skirts of York. But ultimatly it didnt feel special/fast enough so i went for the scooby. Nice car and cool seats though.
