its not PE!!!

When i was at school in the 80's i dodge just about every PE lesson there was! I wasnt fat (in fact i was a world class sportsman) and worked in a gym for 10 years on leaving!

Its about the ease at which cheap rubbish food can be had along with outside school activity.....20 years ago no one went to fast food places on a regular basis.....maybe a bag of chips on a friday. There are now familes that eat burgers 2-3 times a week. Putting on a couple of PE lessons wont help these kids.

to add: the PE "attitude" may cause a problem but its that problem extended to include other lifestyle choices thats the problem...not the actual PE lessons (or lack of) themsleves

Playing more sports IN school would mean the kids are more likely to play sports OUT of school. IMHO

You see kids..... walking

These are clearly members of the social underclass. No self respecting kid these days would be seen walking. They all have to be transported from place to place in expensive SUVs. I thought this was compulsory.

are you sure? this is like the TVR at the roadside thing...everyone says they see it all the time...yet no one does.

my kids walk to school.....and so do most of the other kids in the school. In fact, i went to the same school 25 years ago and got driven FAR more than my kids do.

Well the queues of traffic to get into work this week have been half the length they usually are round here. The reason? Half term, no school runs.

Best watch out for all those rapists and child abducters out there then. There are thousands of them apparently.

Yep, and the streets in town are crammed with hundreds of 'posing' teenagers.

Default Interesting thread

Until I was 13,14 I was what would be considered "chubby", even though I spent hours playing outside. My problem was a mother who was (is) a great cook and used to make far too much of everything, cakes, etc included. And I had a very sweet tooth.

At 14 I realised (basically) that fat blokes would never get a ****, so I stopped eating as much, cut out a lot of the rubbish and started to exercise in a more structured manner.

Lost all the fat over a few months. And have kept it off ever since. Been a regular (as in at least twice a week) gym goer for a few years now - resistance work mainly to keep my metabolic rate up.

My theory is that people are just bone fecking idle - hence all the obese adults. That or they simply eat and drink far too much.

When I was 18 (ish ) we used to walk to the pub and walk home. None of this taxis everywhere malarky. I still park a mile from where I work to ensure I get some excercise every day (plus its free, which is a bonus )

My girlfriend is a dietician in the NHS. The majority of her time is spent on wards (currently specialising on paediatric) but she also does outpatient clinics.

The general trend in the kids she sees seems to be diet. Fed on crisps, sausage rolls fizzy pop and the like. Is home cooking a thing of past in the day of freezers full of ready meals? Seems like it IMO.

Not a kid story I know but... When she asked one bloke why he bothered to turn up for his appointment, given that he ignored everything she told him, his answer was that the clinic was on the way to the pub for him

freezers full of ready meals
Ready Meals Fast food for the home. They should be *banned* in true New Labour style or at least have punitive taxation applied to them.

I disagree, thanks to Ready Meals I'm guranteed at least one meal a day during a busy working week.

I live alone and after a 12 hour day I really can't be arsed to cook, sorry if this offends you, but the alternative is a trip to either McDs or the one kebab shop that's still open that late.

Suddenly Tesco's tomato and pasta thingy seems like the healthy option.

I thought they were supposed to have reduced most of that by now? that's why they don't taste nice any more.

Don't fall for the attractive marketing and packaging. It's barely any better for you (if at all) than Muck Donalds.

Cooking tea doesn't need to take an hour and involve six pans though. 15 to 30 minutes is enough time to knock something fresh up. Yesterday I left home before 8am and got home post 8pm. For tea I had a variation on recipe, served up with some boiled spuds and fresh beans. Drop the capers and cornichons if you want to make it quicker / cheaper. Twenty minutes from getting in the door, I was eating a very tasty meal.

Alternatively, be prepared in advance. Make up a batch of chili and freeze it in bags. Take one out the freezer before you leave home in the morning. Get home, quickly boil up some rice and you're sorted.

So what am I supposed to do then? Bearing in mind that any stored food must be freezable due to the lenghts of time I'm away from home.

I imagine all the Little chef breakfasts on expenses don't help either.

Sorry Paul - I should have stressed that the list was not exhaustive!

I'll take this opportunity to include the jailing of the Guildford 4. Tony wouldn't have apologised otherwise!

The fact that instantly dried veg retain more vitamnis than fresh, makes that a bit of a lame excuse
