I can't keep milk either, which sucks. I wish they sold it in half and quarter pints, then I'd be able to have cornflakes in the morning at least.

I rarely see my home during the week, and a trip home from Dundee to Bucks is not that uncommon, though I usually end up staying the night at my own place in Liverpool and finishing the trip tomorrow.
Edit: There's 300 miles of M6/A74/M74 on that run, and god knows how much M5/M42/M40 (I go that way to avoid Brum and the roadworks) easilly room to gain 90 minutes if not more, I imagine.

we doing cook relatively quick and easy things in the week. Freeze the other portions and then do something that takes longer at the weekends

Tiggs,
In one respect you are right about the effect of Junk food and it has a large bearing on people's general weight and health these days.
I was talking about organised competitive sport at my school such as rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket, gymnastics, swimming etc. as well as annual school sports days.
We used to run several school teams and would play other schools every week. Hell of a difference to PE as you mentioned.
That gave us all a basic fitness the effects of which have lasted all our lives. Even if we no longer play sports, our present fitness has been enhanced by what we did in our early days.

but not all kids did that and not all kids were fat! I was never in any teams at school......but i nvere had crap food and did plenty outside of school.
i agree it may build a good "sport" attitude in kids but i cant see a direct link.
if our school had banned PE in 1985 i would not have got fatter! Nor would anyone else.

PE at school is not the issue here, its the cheapness and availability of ****e foods, be they processed or of the fast variety, especially in school.
When I was at secondary school about 10 years ago, there pretty much wasnt a healthy option on offer in the canteen, it was all burgers, chips, pizza, sausage rolls etc. All high fat low nutrition foods. Its the same(worse really) in the states.
Today, you can buy millions more processed food products than say, 30 years ago. Processed foods laden with god knows what chemicals to make it last longer, boil in the bag better, cook in your microwave faster, taste better, have more texture etc etc.
Its all this crap thats causing obesity, most of this "food" is just empty calories that get turned straight into fat.
How many parents actually make a meal from scratch these days? For that matter how many parents actually feed their kids rather than letting the kids cook for themselves.
How many kids faced with a choice of cooking a meal or microwaving something would choose cooking?
Microwave Chili Con Carne and boil in the bag rice
or
Frying up some mince and onions, adding some fresh tomatoes, tomato puree, a bit of water, spices, kidney beans, boiling up some rice etc etc.
5 minutes on high, bing its done or spend 2 hours making some decent food, Its a no brainer for them really in todays instant on quick fix society.
Who wants to get messy preparing vegetables, washing up pans etc etc kinda thing.
I was about 2 stone overweight all through my teen years, but was I unfit? No.
I played squash twice a week, cycled to school, attended PE etc, messed around outside with my mates, yet I was still overweight.
I only lost my excess fat from 2 years raving
I've only really managed to keep the weight off as my stomach now has no tolerance for crap foods, especially processed meats. Just a sniff of a McD's, or birdseye burgers sparks an acid attack of biblical proportions in my stomach.
I suppose its not so bad as it forces me to eat good food all the time.

Interesting article on Jamie Oliver in this weeks RT. He has to cook school dinners on a budget of 37p. 37p??????? FFS - what can we expect them to eat for 37p????
As he says - he deals with kids who know all about drugs, but nothing about courgettes and veg!

Its like if you have a large garage, there is a tendancy to store more than if you have a smaller one, same principle.
