Why use this forum if you don't own a Subaru and only have time to waste slagging it off. Go somewhere else. You are killing this forum for owners and fans of the marque - fewer people want to come here because of all the negative crap which is posted time and again, week after week.

Argumentative I would call it.

I dont think you can pick anything up that I have said and say "its absolute crap". I happen to think the Impreza is a great car...that ticks a lot of boxes...although it's not withough its short comings.

Where have I stated your specific comments are "absolute crap"?
"So even those that have some genuine input, and even used to own subarus are not welcome?"
I did not say that - only those non owners who are coming here slagging off cars they hardly know, do not like or have no real knowledge of bring down the mood of the forum.
Most would agree with your last statement but why cause hassle and annoyance posting unnecessary riling statements.
Demonstrate to us your indepth practical, hands on, ownership based knowledge of Subaru's or Imprezas and we may respect your points a bit more.

I went from owning a 170bhp 2.5l v6 mondeo to my 'out of the box' WRX and the difference is awe inspiring.... from a standing start... blows the sox off the mondeo.... on the motorway boot at 70/80.... blows the sox off the mondeo
if you want some semi-scientific data to back that up...
On a stretch of private uphill road which I sometimes jump on to on my way from the office.... start at a steady 60mph in 4th (no gear changes)... at point a) foot to floor... at point b) check speedo...
now in the mondeo the most I ever managed was 116

The WRX IS without any doubt faster than MOST other cars on the road..
Hands up who owns an 04/05 WRX..... hands up whos driven one???
I think looking at the drivel that is being written on here... not a great number went up then..
No one is saying that it is the fastest machine on gods earth but to come out with statements like "at motorway cruising speeds accelerating against even a 2.0l mudano will be an eye opener." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not too long ago... 10-15 years ago the only machines available with sub 6 sec 0-62 times were exotica!!! And you're telling me that my WRX isn't quick....... Jesus!!

my 60-100 thing show a WRX is not much faster than a Clio182, and how bad the brakes are.
I also wish I had one evertime the roads are damp - or I do a wet track day.

Vipa - I agree whole heartedlly - I was unlucky enough to go from a standard UK MY98 to a Mondeo S24 (when I wrote the Scooby off my company refused to provide another one - hence the ST24!).
The St24 felt so so very slow in every gear at every speed at everything in fact compared to the Scooby! I even admit that after the ST24 I went to a T4 and this felt like a rocket ship compared to the Mondy!
I am sorry - sure if you try and race in top gear when you are virtually stalling at 1000 rpm in your Scooby versus mondeo man you may get caught out. That's nothing to do with the car - it because you are driving like a Tw*t!
PS. The ST24 was nice and comfy though - really nice seats you know....

Thanks for the vote of confidence Sti Blues........ For a minute there I was starting to wonder if I was the only one on here who had actually driven an 'out of the box' scoob!!!!
And did you know that the T4's nickname at Volvo is 'the licence loser'? hardly a name given to a SLOW car now is it??!!! and guess what people..... the WRX will out perfom the T4!!!

Yes, but is it understeer or a skid???
Oh, sorry, wrong thread - got confused there...
Back on topic, I've driven a lot of 'normal' cars (mid/high-end rep-mobiles) over the years. All have been new (under 2 years old), all have been 'out of the box', and all have been driven by me for a while (at least 6 months).
Nothing compares to the 05 wrx I have now for performance.
Okay, so I haven't driven hot hatches like the Clio, so I won't comment on that one.
But, I love my scooby...
ps in-gear acceleration figures for the WRX:
http://www.prodrive.com/uploads/03MY%20WRX%20PPP.pdf
pps most car mags which ran independent tests found it would do 60 in 5.5 seconds, not 5.9 as quoted (as did Prodrive).

RIGHT, my 2p after reading (and not replying so far)....
WRX's are not slow in the whole scheme of things. My sisters old 2cv is slow. Get some perspective. Yes it may be quicker than x, or slower than y but it's still fast.
0-60 is only good a rough idea of how quick a car is. 0-100 is better, imo, as it includes speeds most cars use these days. HOWEVER having BOTH figures is even better. 30-70 (or whichever speed) is even better and gives a better indication of general overtaking ability. THIS is what is important to most people, not 0-60. People want to know is the thing gonna overtake well and how it 'really' compares to other cars. Look at 30-70, 0-60, 0-100 etc. and 1/4 mile stats to get an idea of the performance. Anyway, don't look at just one figure, look at all you can get your hands on, see the bigger picture.
Brakes - lighter is better for wear full stop. My car weighs around 600kg and has done 3 trackdays with plenty of braking and still loads of pad left, this isn't gonna happen on a 1200kg or 1400kg car. yes you can put better pads in your scoob, but I can put better pads on my 7 so the argument is neither here nor there. Same applies to tyres too. Big plus is trackdays hardly cost me any money.

my own UK Impreza was so quick out of the box that I had to put 50% extra power through the wheels.
if they are as you say *that* good, why do a great number of owners decat? uprate filter? add an aftermarket ecu? uprate the turbo?
funny, but your semi-scientific study doesnt inpsire me with confidence, I went from a 2.5L V6 repmobile and at 70mph it would accelerate as fast as my UK Impreza, well, all bar the shouting.
dont get me wrong, I used to be a die-hard scooby fanatic that would blindly defend the marque as you are now, but dont get all gobby about it FFS

Sorry to hijack, but
"why do a great number of owners decat? uprate filter? add an aftermarket ecu? uprate the turbo"
Isn't one answer 'because they can'? Try doing that to a Mundano, and you wouldn't get much for your money.
Horsepower can be like money; there's never enough, no matter how much you have.

Geek, you are correct, mid range acceleration between the Clio 182 and standard WRX is similar:
Clio 30-70 5.8
WRX 04 30-70 5.8
WRX PPP 30-70 5.1
Clio 0-100 17
WRX 0-100 15.9
WRX PPP 0-100 14.1
The Clio appeals to a different clientel though, mainly girls, hairdressers, cross dressers etc, so to compare the 2 on speed alone is pointless!!! Oh and they break down a lot, you can't beat the Japs for reliability.
