i tried it both with the ignition on and unpluging and replugging its connector .... and in test mode.

What i did exactly was to leave the solenoid un touched & connected. Removed the two pipes down stream. ie unplugged one pipe that goes to the inlet manifold a litlle down stream of the MAF. And the other end was unplugged before it gets to the T piece close to the turbos actuator.

At least on 99/00 it is the ground that is pulled low to activate the solenoid, so you would see 12V to it on one pin continually if you used a voltmeter, or do I misunderstand you?

The solenoid wont click on 01 onwards cars like it did on the Classic, the under dash connectors offer no assistance in cleaning the solenoid.

I have sent you a PM with what to do.

With regard the MAF sensor, on my old MY01 it failled at 40k but a test drive in a new 03 car cured my faulty MAF (LOL)

They are not £77 either more like £320 + Vat the Classic one is cheap (Ish) but not for the 01 onwards cars, hence my test drive and tinker.

John,

I retested this. the Solenoid has two connection from the loom and appears to be mounted on isolating rubbers. One of the pins has 12V and one is ground. At no time during the test cycle does that value of the voltage between the pins change. Nor using a separate earth do either the 0v or 12v get pulled low or high.

So either this is not working or doesn't get changed during ECU test.

I was quoted £250+VAT by my dealer ... so "ouch". i think i need to make sure it's failed before i spend that sort of money.

Perhaps since the 01- solenoid doesn't click in this test mode it wouldn't change the voltage though. The 01- ECU (and the earlier ones) are easily clever enough to detect and report open/short on this circuit.
