Richieh

It is quite a while since I raced there so glad for your sake they re-surfaced it.

I used to race my own build Gp 6 sports racing cars and also had a very nice Brabham BT23C which I raced in F Libre events.

The better the car I drive the worse the driver I believe I am.

At 17/18 I was a driving god in a MK1 Feista, the car would slide on a roundabout at 8MPH and would only do 75 flat out. I drove the car on its limit 98% of the time, I never had a crash or an off the road moment, came close a few times but held it together and kept it pointing forwards...

at 20 I had a diesel escort, the power was about the same as the fiesta but the grip was about double. I could slde that round roundabouts, pull handbrake turns on tight country hairpins, I was like a rally driver...

The I got an impreza sport, and the car felt a lot quicker and the handling was amazing compared to the cars that went before, still drove it hard, but within the capabilities of the car.

Changed to 16" wheels and toyo proxies, handling much improved and more confidence in the car...

Had Eibachs fitted and wheel alignment... Handling is supreme, but my driving skill has not progressed so am further away from the cars limits

Had uprated rear ARB fitted, the steering is now really prescise, turn in is brilliant, and to be honest the car sacres me, the handling limit is now so far beyond the limit of my driving, to loose it I would have to be going very fast, and I frankly would not have the skill to contol it. I have now turned 25 and realised I am no longer invincible, and I also realise an enjoyment of driving is not the same as skill

I drive like miss daisy most of the time have 0 points on my licence, never had a fault accident, but last summer have been hit by another driver not paying attention, and frankly that has also shaken my confidence...

I thought i was a good driver. justification.

Won every karting event ive ever been in, actually not true beaten by my wife on single spinners.
Rally cross expereince.
on those company away day things I won 3 out of 5 events, caterham time trial, single seaters and karting, lost the audi tt and 4x4, actually disqualified from the TT race for hitting the rev limiter .
Never had an accident and drive about 30k a year.
Passed 2 driver training tests for company cars, one of them run by a ex thames valley police driver trainer.

But.
The scoob phreaks me out even after 2 years. Always driven fwd drive cars and can say most have been predictable near the edge. but the scoob seems eratic espicialy over rough ground and rising / underlating ground.

thinking about getting the geometry checked or replacing the springs, but im beginning to think im a better / quicker driver in underpowered fwd cars.

maybe i need some tracktime, rather then the odd squirt in the country.

I agree with the fact that I learn something pretty much each time I drive. I'm a pretty good driver - > 30,000 miles per year, no accidents or points. If anything I suffer from being too laid back most of the time (not all...... ) - I really can't be ar5ed to dive into a miniscule gap in traffic, I'll let people pull in front of me etc and that really seems to irritate whoevers behind. Frankly if I was an agressive driver I'd have sky high blood pressure with all the miles I do! I stick to speed limits around town and very rarely go over 80mph on the motorways (and if I do, it's because I haven't noticed the speedo).

I'm jolly good at manouevering in tight spaces and reverse parking in car parks, but not so hot at parallel parking. Also, I generally can't be ar5ed with parking in a tight space just because it's near the entrance to the supermarket or wherever - I'll park further away and walk. People blocking the way while waiting for a space near the door when there's a 1/2 empty car park are generally guaranteed to change my laid back frame of mind.....

Oh - and I'm doing really well on Project Gotham 2 if that counts for anything....

Try getting the bumpsteer removed Pbee at Cheltenham and use their suspension settings. With solid anti roll bar links you wont recognise the car, and the front tyres dont wear out on the inside any more!

Driving since 18, now 31. Thought I was good til I went on the Police Basic Driving Course! Managed to pass that and then thought I was ok, about to do my Advanced police and Pursuit course and not sure at all!!!!

We all think we're good until some idiot doesn't see us, pulls out, uses mobile phone etc. Then we really find out!

I like to summarise my driving as "overtaking for the enjoyment of it" and not "I must be in front of you" mentality....

Do you get where I'm coming from there.

If "good" is interpreted as "Advanced" then yes I am pretty good. I can heel and toe, use acceleration sense, Do multiple circuits of roundabouts (private ones mind) in a state of continous sideways drift, donuts, burnouts, you name it. I have won donut competitions, got podium placements at the UKD1 drifting champtionship as well as completing a defensive driving course for company cars where my police instructor gave me high marks and commented that "A& B roads were well driven". As well as that I have zero points 6 years no claims bonus and I have never had an own fault accident.

However if "good" is interpreted as "legal", "mechanically sympathetic" and "safe" then no I am not. I hammer the hell out of my cars, constantly break the speed limit and drifting, whilst fun, can never be described as safe as you exceed your cars limits every time you initiate.

So its a bit of yes and no. Make up your own minds.

I don't drive much any more, have crashed the last two cars I owned, and can easily make my wife sick when she's a passenger. When the wheels lose grip I don't have a clue how to correct it. So I think I'm rather crap actually.

Hope this helps the average.
