I can't believe this is still rumbling on!

At least my Scoob is modified so I don't have to worry about Turbo Diesels, unless they're 3.5ltr Twin Turbo jobbies. (535)

Fortunately I am able to comment as I am in a position where I have a Golf GT TDi (150bhp) which has been modded to 195bhp & 285 lb/ft, and also have a STi Scoob.

Now..... don't get me wrong, the Diesel is an awesome bit of kit and surprises MANY on the road, especially with the extra ooomph. But in real world driving a good petrol engine will beat it (ie the STi). Diesels are all well and good, but the power band is soooo narrow you would be hard pushed to get a nats bollock between the on power and redline band (can you class a 5k limit redline??? )!

Please note (with all engine outputs) bhp and torque values do not tell the whole story to how quick a car is on the road!

Saying that.... my Golf has been timed from 0-60, and it achieved it in 6.1 seconds..... i'm sure with a bit more brutality we could of dipped it in to the 5's, so perhaps I have shot my self in the foot with my own admition!

Long live the oil burner! roflol

Regards,
Shaun.

I don't bother racing anymore, clutches are expensive and Scooby is modded, I have nothing to prove. I now enjoy smooth and progressive driving.

If someone comes alongside me and thinks I am going to race them from the lights then they are sadly mistaken.

sith does have a point about expensive replacement of clutches what with all this chav-like desire to race everyonr away from lights! your obviously not short of a quid or two, webmaster, if you run a golf tdi and a impreza sti so spending £400 on new clutch probably wouldnt bother you but to the average bloke thats a big expense to consider!

Shaun,

So your Golf is officially faster than your Escos was as well? A Golf diesel quicker than an Escos, quicker than a UK WRX, MILES faster than a fugly bugeye and can scare STIs in 5th gear at 40mph.

Proof that diesels are better. That's probably why Scoobs are lagging behind so much now - once they've got a decent diesel lump in them they'll be laughing again.

I have my fun on the back roads when there isn't anyone around. Just me, the car and the road. Bliss.

My brother has already offered to buy me slippers and leather gloves. I would prefere Sparco Boots and gloves.

Mattvortex,
Simple rule in life.... If you can't afford to run a car..... don't buy it!

Trails,
You wish!

Craig,

Shaun.

Mate, I really didn't get it until I drove a modern decent diesel

It's like the argument running about the civic type r - all power and no torque - only in reverse. The scoob does make me grin when it comes alive at 3.5k revs, but on the other hand the throttle steerability of the 330D right from 1500 rpm make me grin too, and it felt more involving than the handling on an 03 WRX. Still, the 330D sport is 30k new, so I suppose I should compare it against the STI with PPP for thrills and giggles...

All the same, anyone writing off diesels as slow, smelly and noisy really needs to come into this millennium .

Good grief, I've yet to pick the car up and I'm evangelising already . It's worse than having a born again Christian talking at you, isn't it ? (with apologies to any born again Christians who take offense at that - it's merely using a stereotype to illustrate a point )

Please can you all try a bit harder or I will get bored? Clearly my car looks better and if its faster too this would certainly be unnacceptable to me as an ex-Impreza owner.

this can't go on

M62 Wakefield to Hull, daily, its silver, try if you can, this commute is thoroughly boring counting the power stations one by one

watching Scooby owners faces getting mullered in a tiresome family car cheers me up

thanks

The BMW would've done you in the twisties though.

Remember having some sap in a wrx trying to keep up with me in the twisties and he couldn't, all he could do was overtake me on the straights. I was in my ex's Lupo as well.
So not only are Scoobs slower than diesels sometimes, they can't even keep up with a Lupo in the twisties ffs.
