Is it worth working hard for something that doesn't tell the time as well as my lovely Casio?
Or would you have been better spunking the lot on hookers and coke?
If you've had VFM out of it I'd be forced to agree. Tell me do you get it out and fondle it from time to time? (the watch that is).

This won't win on scoobynet.
Look at the tacky add-ons we get in the member's gallery
Just look at the cars these users drive. It all boasts look at me. They all deny it, but it's true. You have a high flying job, 1.75kids 50% paid off mortgage and you want to show the world how well your coping with life. (but who's watching you? only the kids leaving school going "nice car mister" before nicking your "WRC" valve caps )
It's proof that your a better person than the bloke doing his desk driving job, driving to work everyday in his Nissan Sunny with £100 suit, Nokia 6100, Seiko Kinetic. Or better still, the person in a scoob just like yours...just without the wheels, spoilers and huge blitz backbox.
You may argue its to be different, but is it? You can be different by not having fancy cloths, car or watches. Superficially you may look different, but under the skin your just the same old average human being.
Expand you mind..not your watch collection!

"There's no logical reason why "
are you a robot??? a fine piece of jewlery is not a choice of logic. a fine art painting is just a few quid in paints and canvas but becomes soemthing else when viewed by someone that appreciates it.
fine jewlery is an emotive choice that brings pleasure in the same way. the experience of looking, shopping, buying and wearing something like that is a good one for many people. I would never go to watch a football match but i dont add up the hours my mates spend at them and use some hourly rate to work out the "cost" to them of that time and explain how i would have used the money better.
You seem to hungup on "value" and seem to miss the emotion and that is EXACTLY why places like tiffany exist. You stick a woman on a plane fly her to NY, got to Tiffanys and spend a bundle on her do you think she says "oh, i am sad......dont you know that you are paying twice as much for the name and the little blue box"......maybe your wife would? glad mine doesnt.

My Seiko keeps time to within about a second a month. That's not the reason you buy an expensive watch (assuming image *isn't* the driving force). Contentment from ownership is hard to define, but it does give me a lot of personal satisfation, above and beyond the beauty and function of the object itself. Do i fondle it? No, but i've been caught staring at the intricate movement for an inordinately long time - it's hypnotic and relaxing in a fish tank sort of way! Hookers and coke? LOL, no, but it's nice to know i could if i wanted to...

According to your hypothesis, beauty is defined solely by price. My partner would much more enjoy a lovingly made piece of handmade jewelery from far away lands, than some tacky piece of expensive 'bling' from Tiffany's. In her mind, there is no connection between price and desireability.

Have to say I wouldn't be too impressed by a partner who would prefer me to waste OUR money buying a trinket from Tiffanys hoi palloy range when I could get the same thing massively cheaper elsewhere.
I'd prefer someone who knew true value when they saw it and wasn't overly bothered with trying to emulate Audrey Hepburn like most of the sad cows that shop in Tiffanys.

you win....good luck to you, your wife and some friendship bangle crafted by a 90 year old chinese monk worth £1.87 but valued so highly by those untouched by the evil bling bling.

Very true, take a look on showoffmycar.com - something like that - over 200 Subaru's and less than 25 from other manufaturers.
I would only consider wearing an expensive watch if it was a gift. Buying a nice watch for someone else is a long way off blinging up your own wrist.

LOL, where did "bling" come into it?!! Expensive watches don't HAVE to be pretentious, showy, have lots of buttons or tell the time in Outer Mongolia!!

I think it's disgusting when people judge an item's merit on how much it cost. Really, really sad.

really? really sad? you have too much time on your hands if other people buying stuff makes you sad!

I bought it because 'I' enjoy the feeling I get wearing it. Lets face it apart from the most 'in your face' watches like Bvlgari most people will just see smething on a wrist and will not be the wiser, or if they do get a good look, won't know what they are looking at.
One example..... Patak Phillipe.....
One of the most sought after watches in the world, prices start at something rediculous, 6k I think, but to look at they are just plain & ordinary watches.... unless that is you know what you are looking at!
I certainly didn't buy mine to 'keep up with the Jones'!

There are much more important things to worry about. Like someone else said, expand your mind, not your jewelery collection..

Also, my watch has been officially in production for 100 years now and when I eventually kick the bucket my son will get it as a very personal remender for him of me.
