VW must give better launch parties in sunny climes.

Yes the Scoob parts are serviceable, the £65 was from eurocarparts - god knows how much it would be from VW. Regards the Golf, bodywork fine, engine and gearbox fine, all the problems have been the bits that hang underneath. Had the same problem with my 325 tds se BMW. 3 years old and 3 broken coil springs, 2 collapsed trailing arm bushes ('they all do that mate' said the dealer), 2 front ball joints and the rear shock bushes. All down to quality of the parts I think.

i am probably one of the many who has had both golfs and scoobs.
my golf was an 91 model 8v mark 2 and it was great fun, had it until 2 years ago. it was amazing what new stuff you could beat in it.
having had both though i would say the scoob is still the better car, just have to get used to using the turbo. and not suffering from turbo lag so much.
having said that if the new golf gti is on my company car list i am getting one!

Danny,

Sense and car buying are not common bedfellows Danny - if they were we'd question buying a piece of metal that lost over 50% of its value in the first three years - they all nearly do. For me, and maybe its immature, I don't see myself thinking back to my younger day and getting a warm feeling from the 45mpg I got out of my economical diesel . There is something about being excessive that makes you feel alive, being tight never seemed that attractive - but hey I'll probably still have a mortgage when I'm 80. (You just know my next car is going to be a diesel and Danny will bump into me )

I love my car and its a Subaru, why should I come on a Subaru enthusiasts site to justify buying it instead of a golf etc etc

If you think Golfs are the best then buy one, good luck to you and i'm sure there are very good VW forums on the net

Hopefully this will be my first ever thread in Muppets

well guess I better put my 2p worth in ... just picked up a new 05 STi yesterday and am absoultely loving it up to now... still running it in so havent really been much above the 4k rev mark.

We also own a Golf GT TDi PD 130 on an 03 plate which has a tuning box on it. My impressions are that the golf has far better low down torque than the scoob, however pushing higher above the rev range and the golf just doesnt stand a chance, add to this the, to be honest, amazing grip of the scoob on the road and the 4 weel drive and I would choose the scoob any day. Its horses for courses really as has been commented many times on here .. for fun, handling and smiles I would take the scoob any day of the week. For great performance and the MPG to go with it the golf diesel wins hands down.

Were lucky enough to have the best of both worlds but you really cant poke to much fun at todays diesels they really are catching up in the performance V £££s debate!

Either way both are great cars in their own rights. The good old tractor jokes still crack me up to ... either way one things for certain the good old master card analogy is...

Cheap Saxo VTR ------- £8995
Go faster stripes ------- £ 100

The look on their face when their either smoked by a diesel or the scoob ---- Priceless

/me runs :x

Not a new breed - I've been doing it just under 3 years, in a PD150 GTi 6-speed, 72,500 miles and no problems at all

dba the tuning box I have I got off ebay from a guy cjmarsden dunno if he sells them now thought but he was very good to deal with. The actual tuning box is a speedbuster one .. check out http://www.speed-buster.de/en/index_chiptuning.html which is the official site. From memory I paid just over £200 for it and the box works great. Never had the car on a Rolling Road but certainly gives a lot quicker acceleration on it and the turbo now bangs in at around 1.5k revs hehe (the info is for the golf not the scoob just incase anyone is wondering )

edit damn first cornet I've missed since I got the scoob

Oh and deffo agree with the scooby being a head turner... never had so many looks from people in the golf oh yes and the scoob barble from the flat 4 beats the knocking diesel any day of the week puuuuuurrrrrrrrrrr

only way you would get me in a diesel is if I was doing 20K miles a year, otherwise forget it.

Here we go again diesel supremacy rules. Yes as a lad I remember drooling over that Sierra 2.3D in 1983, I said one day I too will have one of those!

"the rapid but anonymous WRX lacks the Golfs effortless class, quality and sporting identity. That it also fails to match the VWs nuggety, involving dynamics and vocal, characterful delivery puts more weight behind it's case"

TBH this is total tripe, has EVO has gone totally bonkers, or this is a wind up how you could call a WRX anonymous - its totally not but the Golf totally is, maybe it was a mis print. The Golfs sporting identity - ? from 20 years of mediocre cars? They have only recently started to get it right with the R32 and the new model GTI. Even the standard WRX has surely got a more vocal and charecterful delivery with its flat 4 burble.
And yes - wtf are nuggety dynamics?

Well when you get constipated and start $hitting rabitt ***** they are like nuggets? So maybe they are trying to say the golf is like a lump od rabbit $hit?

I have to admit, I agree I have had a golf and compared to my scoob the above is true,,,, but then again it was a diesel that I had

LOL @ all these new age WRX owners getting their knickers in a twist because the new Golf Diesel is better than a standard blob eye.

Let's be honest about one thing here, the 03,04,05 WRX is nothing to write home about is it? 215bhp WOW big deal. Like I said earlier, if it wasn't for the AWD just how many of you would buy one? I know I wouldn't.

Lancer owners take this p1ss out of the VIII 260, but hang on a minute that is the same power as the mighty STi what must they be thinking about the WRX ?

What I'm trying to say is, the WRX is a fairly decent car but to make it a better car you need to spend money on it. That just isn't right in my opinion. If it came with 265bhp out of the box it would be worth the money that these cars demand.

I went to a Fabia vRS on cost grounds, but I'm on my way back to a Scoob on hooligan grounds.

Screw the cost, but then I don't need it for work otherwise commuting costs would be a big deciding factor...

So, you pull into a packed car park in a gleaming wrx, or a 15th incarnation of a german box, which do you think will get the looks and respect???For me even a standard wrx has to have more of a feel good factor than a golf, and thats what owning a scoob is all about.
Hmmmmmmmmm. Strikes me a bit sad if you're main reason for having a nice car is posing around in car parks.

The march of the Golf diesel. Mines done 90k and no major problems. All I've changed is two rear bulbs. You cant really complain about a 20,000 optional service interval either!

My P1 has done just over 40k and all its needed is a new battery (still flat within two days standing )

Will be getting a tuning box for the Golf soon to bring it up to 140 bhp. No match whatsoever for a close to 300 bhp P1 but it's what I prefer to drive most of the time. Feel no less a man driving into a packed car park either
