Don't discredit the 1.6 - I owned the 1.9 which I then Mi16'd and couldn't believe how different the 1.6 felt - seemed to turn in easier, felt lighter, more nimble and there's more chance of finding an unthrashed example
...or should that be more chance of finding a thrashed example due to people trying to keep up with 1.9s ??
Making me think about it now...do I really need the Scoob

Do it, if you get a good one you'll not regret it. Mine (a 1.6, that may be in for a heart transplant soon!) is approaching it's 16th Birthday and 130K miles! Still love it and I've had a few 1.9's to. Differant beast bot both have their own strenghts and weaknesses of character.
Favourite colour has to be Sorrento green. It's a dark matallic green that in certain light lookes black (confused a few who saw mine!). I had full gary leather too. Unfortunatly that got nicked and stripped, I was heart broken!

1.6 has more chance of being thrashed, as it was easier to insure, but on the other hand more women bought the 1.6.
May look at buying another std 1.9 in summer to partner my 205 Mi16 I did put the 405 up for sale last month, but it looked so sweet once I'd washed it i decided to keep it for now!!

It took 4 hours to clean it
All the seams and around the bumpers and chrome bits had a few years of green moss in there, so I washed the car, then went around the whole of it with a toothbrush (including engine bay and inside the doors etc) and then washed it for a second time.
After that it was T-Cut, then polished and buffed dry. I was cleaning it up to sell, but it looked so mint I decided it wasnt worth selling it for £1300. It has all the toys as well - leather, A/C, heated seats, rebuilt engine etc. Just has some minor niggles to sort out, then I may track it

I do like your 405 Simon Very good example. I would have been tempted when you had it up for sale to use as my work hack, but need the money elsewhere at the mo But as you decided not to sell it anyway!

Hi all, I love GTI too, and an ex girlfriend had one that I would love to have. It was a J plate 1.6, but in a lovely green colour. I thought it was called sorrento green, but looking at the examples here I might be wrong. This green has much lighter. Does anyone know what that colour was called ?? It was almost similar in colour to the green used in a traffic light.
If a good example came up, I would have it straight away.
